A couple of weeks ago, we asked the question: “What happened to Dr. Lauren Bloom on New Amsterdamn” because Janet Montgomery’s character had seemingly disappeared from the show after being shipped off to rehab to take care of a Ritalin addiction. Janet Montgomery, however, had not been written out of the show. It turns out, in real life she was pregnant and she was on maternity leave. She returned in this week’s episode of New Amsterdam briefly, ostensibly to tell Max that she was quitting her job and leaving New Amsterdam. However, when she went to Max’s apartment at the end of the episode to deliver the news, she found Max looking shocked and covered in blood.

OK, so here’s the deal: Janet Montgomery is not leaving the show. She’ll be back for next week’s episode, and she will also return for season 2, which has already been renewed, as you can see in this Instagram post:

That post is actually from Lisa O’Hare, who plays Max’s wife, Georgia Goodwin, on the series. As one can see from the Instagram post, she is also excited about returning next year. But where the hell has she been this year? She hasn’t appeared in an episode since March 5th, after having played a fairly significant role in the front half of the season. It’s doubly odd that she would be missing while she is pregnant and while Max is trying to recover from cancer. So, when Max opened the door to his own apartment and Dr. Bloom saw him covered in blood, the first thought that many have jumped to after seeing a shocked and daze Max is, “Where’s his wife?”

Unfortunately, I think the blood on Max’s sweater may belong to Georgia and/or her baby. I think Dr. Bloom may help Max and Georgia out of a dire situation, and I think doing so might be what prompts Dr. Bloom to stay at the hospital.

But also: Where the hell has Lisa O’Hare been, and why does this show keep disappearing its female characters? Actually, Lisa O’Hare, like Janet Montgomery, was also on maternity leave. She and Janet Montgomery both left and returned around the same time.

Based on this behind-the-scenes photo from the season finale, I am guessing that Georgia will also finally be having that baby. In their apartment.

Things should, however, return to normal in season two, and maybe we can put that weird episode where Max and Helen seemed to express romantic feelings for one another behind us. In the meantime, it doesn’t appear that the other lead female character on the series, played by Freema Agyeman, will be taking maternity leave anytime soon. Or maybe she will. I don’t know her life, and if she does, Mazel tov!
