Trailers You Missed: MOAR BAT CONTENT

Maybe I’ve just been burned too many times by backdoor pilots on The CW (RIP Wayward Sisters, #neverforget), or maybe it just feels like forever since last December’s Big Honking Arrowverse Elseworlds Crossover introduced us to Gotham’s other Batperson. But for some reason, I’d sort of forgotten that we’re supposed to be waiting for Ruby Rose’s Batwoman to join the ranks of network TV’s superheroes.

Well, get ready to wait even harder, because The CW confirmed that it has officially ordered Batwoman to series… and it released a teaser to prove it or something!

Batwoman — Coming “Soon” To The CW

That’s… a whole lotta fancy nothing. There’s a Batsignal, and an unrealistically long cape, and an unnecessary butt shot! It’s basically a 20-second mood board. But it doesn’t really need to show us much, because we’ve already met Kate Kane in the aforementioned crossover. And whatever else the show has going for it — name recognition, shared Berlanti pedigree with the other Arrowverse shows — it also will make history for featuring the first gay lead character in a live-action superhero series. The show is doing just fine, thanks.

And speaking of mood boards — THIS IS A STRONG MOOD, HBO:

Watchmen — Coming this Fall to HBO
Damon Lindelof is putting his own spin on one of the most influential graphic novels of all time. But while HBO is calling this a “modern-day reimagining” of Alan Moore’s classic, set in an alternate history where “superheroes are treated as outlaws,” it also kinda looks like a distant sequel (if Jeremy Irons as old man Ozymandias is any indicator)? Guess we’ll have to wait to see how it ties to the original, and how it diverges. The series also stars Regina King, Jean Smart, Tim Blake Nelson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Louis Gossett Jr., and Don Johnson playing the Don Johnson-iest character to ever Don Johnson.

The Righteous Gemstones — Coming to HBO this August
Yup, it’s another Danny McBride joint for HBO — only this time he’s skewering multi-generational families of televangelists! I’m not saying I wouldn’t be into this without John Goodman and Adam Devine playing McBride’s family, I’m just saying I’m SUPER into it knowing that they are. It’s all just so perfectly appropriate. And don’t worry, of course Walton Goggins is also co-starring.

You know what else is perfectly appropriate? Letting Arnold Schwarzenegger narrate nature documentaries, WHICH IS A THING THAT’S HAPPENING NOW I GUESS:

Wonders of the Sea — Available on digital and On Demand June 4
To be fair, it doesn’t look like this is a new movie — it’s just finally coming out here. Basically, it’s Blue Planet as directed by Jacques Cousteau’s son and narrated by the furthest thing you could imagine to David Attenborough.

And now for something GOOD:

The Farewell — In theaters July 12
This Sundance darling sparked a bidding war, got rave reviews, and is based on real events in the life of director Lulu Wang. But it may go down as the movie that showed just how much dramatic potential is lurking underneath Awkwafina’s comedic chops. The hook is simple: A large Chinese family finds out their matriarch has inoperable cancer, and instead of telling her she’s dying, they… manufacture an excuse (a wedding!) to get the whole crew back home for one last shindig. As you can tell from the trailer, there’s genuine humor and love on display, as well as an exploration of eastern vs western culture (through the eyes of Awkwafina’s China-born, U.S.-raised character) and family dynamics. It just looks so touching!

Blinded By The Light — In theaters August 14
Writer/director Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham) is tackling a very important subject: Bruce Springsteen. Based on the memoir written by Sarfraz Manzoor, this film tells the story of a British teen of Pakistani descent named Javed (Viveik Kalra) finding comfort and inspiration in the working-class musings of the Boss himself. And it just looks SO CHARMING. The film also stars Hayley Atwell, Rob Brydon, Kulvinder Ghir, Nell Williams, Dean-Charles Chapman, and Aaron Phagura.
