9 Reasons You Should Give Fox's New Show "Breaking In" a Shot

By Dustin Rowles | Posted Under TV Reviews | Comments (49)

breaking-in-fox-tv-show.jpg

1. It’s a novel premise: It’s an office comedy, set in a sketchy security company, where the goal is to breach a company’s security in order to expose its flaws. This allows for a mini-heist or two in each episode. Office comedy + heists = Amusing possibilities.

2. Christian Slater: He’s had some serious bad luck with television shows, but this one is a comedy, which allows Slater to flash some of that wiseacre smarm that reminds us why we liked him so much in Heathers and Kuffs. Plus, now that Jack Nicholson is an infrequent presence in movies and television, someone’s got to carry the Nicholson voice until Jay Baruchel lands another television gig.

3. The Black Guy: He’s like the sassy black woman stereotype trapped in the body of a Dungeons and Dragons’ geek. His IQ is 161, he does a mean Chewbacca impression, and his office pranks include turning a co-worker’s car upside down and advertising his credit card number on a blimp over a sports stadium. Also, he uses “Obama!” as a snappy comeback. He steals every scene he’s in.

4. Odette Annabele: Odette Yustman got married and changed her name to Odette Annabel. She’s not a great actress, but she is very pretty. And perfectly serviceable in the role of a sexy safe cracker. Plus, where Odette Yustman is, her ass is never far behind (pun FACE).

5. Michael Rosenbaum: The former Lex Luthor, Rosenbaum now has hair and he crushes his one scene in the pilot, as the douchebag boyfriend of Odette Annabel’s character. He tucks his jeans in his Uggs! Also, I had no idea that Rosenbaum had a sense of humor.

6. Jennifer Irwin: You remember her from the spectacular “Slings and Arrows,” right? Her character name here is Creepy Carol. It is fantastically appropriate.

7. Bret Harrison: He never got his due in “Reaper” because everyone was so busy loving on Taylor Labine. Here, he’s the show’s focal point — a computer whiz who was living the life as a college student before he was recruited into the security company. He has great comedic timing,

8. Seth Gordon: “Breaking In,” comes from Seth Gordon, who directs the pilot. You may know Gordon as the director of the magnificent The King of Kong. Combine that sensibility with the writer (Adam F. Goldberg, who wrote Fanboy) and there’s plenty of comedic potential.

9. Good Energy: I like the energy of the show. It’s dorky yet clever, in a “Community” sort of way. Christian Slater calls his employees, male and female alike, “sweetheart.” There’s a sexual assault on a candy bar. There’s an “Oz” reference. And there’s sly SkyMall humor.

It’s most certainly worth revisiting to see if the show can maintain that level of energy and wit.

You mean it's not just suburban mall chicks who still think it's 2003? There are men who wear Uggs also?

Posted by: PaddyDog at April 7, 2011 3:35 PM

I only need one reason to avoid it: FOX.

Posted by: John W at April 7, 2011 3:35 PM

huh.
The hubster and I had this playing in the background after Idol (Go Casey with the Bassy!) and were not impressed.
I guess we'll give it another chance and actually pay attention next week. Not holding out much hope though, Slater seems to kill every tv show he touches.

Posted by: Stella at April 7, 2011 3:41 PM

1. It's a Novel Premise:

Ummm, no, it's Sneakers.

Posted by: WestCoastPat at April 7, 2011 3:44 PM

So, how many weeks until FOX kills it off? I say 7.

Posted by: Markus at April 7, 2011 3:46 PM

Plus, where Odette Yustman is, her ass is never far behind.

Amen to that, my brother.

Thank you for the picture, as awlays. You have made today a good day.

Maybe I will give this a shot after all.

I watched the first episode, and as much as I really wanted to like it...
It seemed awfully light on plot. The patter and reparte was pretty good (well, it had its moments anyways) and I enjoyed watching Slater be smarmy and devious, but it seemed lacking. Unsatisfying. Rushed.

I can understand why it's a half-hour, because there just wasn't enough story for an hour long show.

I'll keep watching, because damn my eyes I really want to like it (for Christian's sake, if only because My Own Worst Enemy was such fun while it lasted) but my early prediction is that it won't get picked up.

I'm prepared to be happily surprised, though. Fingers crossed.

Poor Bret Harrison. I've loved him since "The Loop," a show that aired a few years ago that also starred my secret shame boyfriend, Eric Christian Olsen. Harrison's a talented comedic actor, but he just can't seem to find a show that sticks. I'll watch this one, but I won't be surprised when it's pulled from the air in a few weeks.

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at April 7, 2011 3:52 PM

I'm ON IT. Watching the pilot now.
"Are you a cuddler, Cam? You look cuddly"
I do love me some Christian Slater (Happy Harry Hard-On will always have a place in my heart) it is nice to see his hair plugs have come in so well.

Posted by: Lindsey with an 'e' at April 7, 2011 3:52 PM

Sorry, Dustin. Now you know why I still haven't watched "Sneakers".

Posted by: Jay at April 7, 2011 3:53 PM

There was a great article about this show that I'm too lazy to link to, but it was essentially that a lot of these shows are ego-strokes for the TV execs who approve them. There's always an idealized middle aged guy who's talented, driven, sarcastic bastard leading a group of young creative hotshots.

Posted by: Mrcreosote at April 7, 2011 3:55 PM

And by "shot," he means . . .

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at April 7, 2011 3:59 PM

Man I miss Reaper. Still, I've already set my DVR and I'm crossing my fingers in the hope that it is good and that FOX won't start fucking with it.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at April 7, 2011 4:00 PM

Come on... it's got Trevor from The Whitest Kids You Know. He's awesome!

Posted by: Ted at April 7, 2011 4:12 PM

Hmmm. Well, it isn't terrible. It also isn't great. Maybe it will hit its stride in a few eps, quit trying so hard.

Posted by: Lindsey with an 'e' at April 7, 2011 4:13 PM

Sorry, I got distracted by Ms. Yustman, excuse me, Mrs. Annabele's ass. It happens.

But I wanted to address this:

He’s like the sassy black woman stereotype trapped in the body of a Dungeons and Dragons’ geek.

I love sassy women, black or otherwise. I just loves me some sass. And I am "Dungeons and Dragons" geek. AND I have been doing a mean Chewbacca impression since age 7.

I could probably just watch an entire show based around the Black Guy.

Posted by: Forbiddendonut at April 7, 2011 4:14 PM

I am considering watching this only because of my love of Bret Harrison on Reaper.

Posted by: Julie at April 7, 2011 4:15 PM

I really, really like Christian Slater. 'My Own Worst Enemy' was enjoyable... I just hope he gets a steady gig.

Posted by: Allen at April 7, 2011 4:22 PM

Its a novel premise? Hmm. They are pitching it so it sounds - to me- like that TBS Show "Leverage".

Posted by: JuiceinLA at April 7, 2011 4:27 PM

Only reason I need is reason #2. Christian Slater.

Posted by: Sarah at April 7, 2011 4:28 PM

I love Michael Rosenbaum.

He's like a grown up version of Scott Michael Foster.

Posted by: grace b at April 7, 2011 4:31 PM

Christian Slater was my favorite actor when I was a teenager and I kept hoping he'd do well in each show he did lately but I had given up on even trying this. Now I have to change my mind and check it out. Don't break my heart again Kuffs! I mean it.

Posted by: Paultera at April 7, 2011 4:43 PM

Strange, I thought Taylor Labine was pretty irritating in Reaper. I like Bret Harrison though, and since it's on hulu, I'll go give it a look.

Posted by: snapnhiss at April 7, 2011 4:53 PM

Well, it did really well in the ratings apparently, so that's good. I personally liked it too - you have to forgive a pilot episode for feeling choppy, what with all of the character introduction they have to do. If I like a pilot even a bit, I'll usually give it three or so eps to decide.

Posted by: Nicole at April 7, 2011 4:54 PM

4. Odette Annabele
5. Michael Rosenbaum

Wait. A casting director matched her with him?! I don't think so.

Posted by: branded at April 7, 2011 5:05 PM

I'm torn between my Lorite cynicism and my hatred for new material being described as 'It's a mix between (insert IP) and (insert IP)'.

Posted by: Socraz6 at April 7, 2011 5:13 PM

Oh thaaaaat's why the douchebag boyfriend looked so familiar. Huh.
Well, I watched it on Hulu today and was not all that impressed but I'll give it a shot on my actual TV I suppose. But just one though. I have to pick the TV related battles I'm willing to have with my husband during basketball season.

Posted by: JenVegas at April 7, 2011 5:17 PM

I just finished the first episode, not bad, not bad at all. Oddete Yustinherpanties is definitely a weak link though.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at April 7, 2011 5:42 PM

Seeing Lex Luthor with hair and a sense of humour is blowing. my. mind.

Posted by: squeeziee at April 7, 2011 6:55 PM

I stumbled across it last night and was pleasantly surprised by it.

Michael Rosenbaum was in James Gunn's PG Porn series. His episodes weren't nearly as funny as Nathan Fillion's though.

Posted by: Uda at April 7, 2011 7:29 PM

I miss Reaper too...

And you've never seen Sorority Boys?

Posted by: Candee at April 7, 2011 9:05 PM

leverage, hustle, sneakers. the point is certain formulas work.

but didn't Rowles just deliver a little petulant snide to Christian Slater just a few days ago? and now i should try this show out?

Payola or reignited Rowlesian teenage wet dream?

Pajibans assemble, and vote! before RR, there was Christian Slater.

maybe a disfigured Pump Up the Volume love? An emotionally crippled Heathers crush? maybe even a pre-pubescent Legend Of Billie Jean fantasy? Does "Iron Jowls" Rowles have a soft underside, or is it crass capitalism?

I never lose faith in the wisdom of our illustrious leader, i only proffer the facts for a democratic vote.

Posted by: idleprimate at April 7, 2011 9:53 PM

p.s. Reaper was the tits. life is a cancellation highway.

Posted by: idleprimate at April 7, 2011 9:54 PM

Office humor + heists = Archer. Christian Slater hasn't had bad luck, he's been in bad shows.

Posted by: trippdup at April 7, 2011 10:00 PM

I Luuuuurve Michael Rosenbaum. I liked him in "Pool Hall Junkies" and I think he looks good with hair.

Posted by: MiniTs at April 7, 2011 10:03 PM

Michael Douchenbaum is so much hotter than Michael Chemobaum. Cancer (or kryptonite-induced alopecia, whatever) is such a downer.

And because I will do anything Dustin says, I will give the show a shot. Look out, Hulu, here I come!!

Posted by: Jelinas at April 7, 2011 10:33 PM

Let me guess... the kid can hack cell phones, air conditioning and lighting systems, cars, etc. ad nauseam. If so, it is indeed just Leverage and fuck that shit.

Posted by: Uriah Creep at April 7, 2011 10:59 PM

Of course Michael Rosenbaum has a sense of humour - does a little show called Zoe, Duncan, Jack and Jane ring a bell?

Posted by: Shane at April 8, 2011 1:37 AM

Speaking of Taylor Labine, does anyone remember that weird show with the band that can see dead people...? What was it called..? Dead last?

Posted by: Sarah J-town at April 8, 2011 1:38 AM

I remember it, Sarah J-town. It was indeed called Dead Last. Where the band finds some amulet that forces them to see ghosts and then they have to help the ghosts cross over. Ahhh, memories of a childhood squandered on TV.

My review from Rustys column right after seeing it:

We saw "Breaking In" last night. It was indescribably bad. So I'll describe it. Simply put they used every stereotype known to man for the characters and combined that with writing so bad that it made 2 1/2 men look clever.

Slater played "a wise-cracking hard ass of some variety who mayhaps has a soft side". Gosh I've heard that somewhere before...

The girl is a safe cracker because thats surprising! Look she doesn't like girly stuff she used a drill! GrrrrL Power!

They of course have a token nerd. A black guy who loves Star Trek and Star Wars. Someone must have said "We gotta have a nerd." then someone else said
"OMG OMG lets make him BLACK!"

And there's a white guy who is supposed to be an actor... con man... something....

And the star of the show is the guy from "reaper" who's a hacker... because they say he is...

Good lord it's just bad.

Posted by: logan at April 8, 2011 10:14 AM

JuceinLA is right, this is LEVERAGE! It's the same premise, the same dynamics, the same characters... too bad it's half as long! I love leverage, watched the first episode of this, and will probably give it a shot. Honestly, though, it's very much the same as leverage.

Nice.
Ben Kingsley's accent was all over the place and I hated that ponytail.
But I still love Sneakers. One of my favourite cast ensamble films.

"Ben Kingsley's accent was all over the place."

One word: Disaster.

It also helps to emergency situations, if you pack something in a pocket, as wet clothing must move. The prices are very reasonable and can always be bought in large quantities for use.
