You Have a Face For Radio! The Faces Behind Your Favorite National Public Radio (NPR) Personalities

By Dustin Rowles | Posted Under Seriously Random Lists | Comments (68)

Ira_Glassnpad.jpg

As a white, liberal thirty-something stereotype, I obviously listen to a lot of National Public Radio (and American Public Media). Besides the Internet, it’s where I get most of my news. It’s also the best way to educate yourself for daily games of @QRANK. I spend a lot of time with these people, and over the years, I’ve developed certain relationships (Note: I am not about to ask you to donate). For instance, I don’t give a damn about business and finance news, but Kai Rysdall is my favorite public radio personality. If I spend any time in the car over the weekend, I look forward to listening to “Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me,” and for reasons that escape me, I usually end up listening to “Car Talk,” too, even though I have no interest at all. If Terry Gross is not interviewing a jazz musician or a novelist writing a romance about the migrating habits of insects, I often seek that show out. I also hate Garisson Keillor with the fire of a thousand suns, and yet somehow, his voice ends up booming into the background of my life at least once a weekend.

Yet, despite all the time I spend with these people, I’ve never seen pictures of most of them. Most people know what “This American Life’s” Ira Glass looks like, and if you watch any or the Sunday morning news shows, you’re probably familiar with Michele Norris. Otherwise, like many of you, I only have images in my head of them.

Today, I’m going to shatter those images. But don’t worry — the shock will pass, and in a couple of days or weeks, you will forget what they look like again, and the image you previously had in your mind will return. I don’t know how many times I’ve looked up Terry Gross, and I’m surprised every single time by what she looks like. Yet, no matter how many times I see photos of her, when I’m listening to her, I still imagine that she looks like Lisa Kudrow. Moreover, many of you might be surprised to learn that Diane Rehm doesn’t look like a 95-year-old chain smoker. In fact, the only person on this list besides Ira Glass that actually looks like I imagine he looks is Peter Sagal, only the guy I have in my mind has much softer features.

Also receiving votes: Robert Krulwich and Jad Abumrad of Radiolab. Jad's appearance always surprises me, as for some reason I always think of him looking like Torey Malatea from Mythbusters. Not sure why. Even knowing he's of Lebanese descent, I still want to picture him as Vaguely Italian.

Posted by: StoatCat at April 13, 2011 12:07 PM

Sorry, Torey Belleci. GET OUT OF MY HEAD, IRA GLASS.

Posted by: StoatCat at April 13, 2011 12:10 PM

I also have no real interest in car talk (I think it's just because they always talk about such specific problems), but those guys CRACK me UP. They're just so endearingly goofy.

Posted by: Anna von Beav at April 13, 2011 12:11 PM

Peter Sagal looks like he's going to sell me something I don't want.

Posted by: Ian at April 13, 2011 12:12 PM

Wow. Diane Rehm is actually kind of attractive. I expected some kind of shriveled, near-death gorgon with leathery skin and a crown of thinning blue hair.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at April 13, 2011 12:13 PM

Also GK's puppeteer needs to come back from his smoke break.

Posted by: Ian at April 13, 2011 12:14 PM

I have a total crush on Steve Inskeep, and was so glad to see a picture and discover that he is, in fact, attractive. Wish I could say the same for David Wessel, alas.

Posted by: Samantha at April 13, 2011 12:17 PM

Carl Kassel looks like somebody asked Central Casting for a "crusty, hard-ass reporter." I guarantee there is a 40-year-old picture of him somewhere with his sleeves rolled up, tie and collar loosened, cigarette in one hand, bottle of whiskey and Remington typewriter on the desk as he's on the phone berating some hapless government flack.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at April 13, 2011 12:18 PM

Holy crap, Dustin - get out of my head. I spent 20 minutes this morning looking for pictures of the BBC World News radio team (they're on at 9am on my local NPR station), couldn't find a one. Very frustrating, because they have quickly become two of my favorite newsfolk.

Like Samantha, I kind of already had a crush on Steve Inskeep, and now it's official. Plus, how else would Carl Kassel look? I love the way he cracks up when someone says something particularly silly on "Wait, Wait."

Posted by: Captain Tuttle at April 13, 2011 12:28 PM

Carl Kassel has saliva-mouth and has no business being in radio. un-listenable.

Posted by: gunnertec at April 13, 2011 12:34 PM

This is one of the few things I miss now that I am taking public transportation. I loved listening to NPR in my car in the morning and on weekends. I tried streaming it on my phone, but I always lose service on the Metro. I miss my NPR.

Posted by: Nimue at April 13, 2011 12:38 PM

I remember the first time I ever saw Garrison Keillor's picture, I was just taken aback. I'd been listening to his voice ever since I was a little kid, and he just looked so... square. I don't even know how I thought he looked in my head, but not like that.

Posted by: linny at April 13, 2011 12:38 PM

Garrison Keillor is my favorite. I love Guy Noir.

Posted by: Danielle Lilly at April 13, 2011 12:41 PM

Oh, Ira. I would sex the glasses right off your face. Or the salt right out of your hair.

Posted by: Internet Magpie at April 13, 2011 12:44 PM

Sigh. Kai Rysdall has been seducing my earholes for years; long before I actually cared about market news. Not that I'm sure I do now. Bob Moon was on last week and I confess I sort of tuned him out. But I already knew what my imaginary lover Kai looked like because I friended him on Facebook a while ago.

I know I'm not the only one to succumb to his velvet purr. Also, am I the only person who finds it impossible to work out without listening to NPR? I can't do music, it's not distracting enough.

Posted by: AM at April 13, 2011 12:47 PM

I never noticed before how the NPR logo, with it's Red and Blue letter blocks are divided right down the middle by the B&W. Truth, folks, knows no politics.

Posted by: stella at April 13, 2011 1:00 PM

I love this video of NPR folks lip syncing Lady Gaga. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KenS0h3-Pc
After watching it Ari Shapiro became my NPR crush

RE Nimue: "This is one of the few things I miss now that I am taking public transportation. I loved listening to NPR in my car in the morning and on weekends. I tried streaming it on my phone, but I always lose service on the Metro. I miss my NPR."

Have you tried using a radio? My iPhone includes one. Not sure how good the reception would be down in a subway tunnel, but it's worth a try.

Posted by: Slash at April 13, 2011 1:13 PM

WHOA! STEVE INSKEEP! You are about 20 years younger than I thought. Helloooo.

Posted by: coveredinbees at April 13, 2011 1:13 PM

Sorry, not iPhone, iPod. My tiny iPod also includes a radio receiver.

Posted by: Slash at April 13, 2011 1:14 PM

I'll try very hard not to geek out but this is the best Pajiba post ever! I love Marketplace to pieces. It's like having the Economist read out loud to you, and is a great reminder that the study of economics remains a true social science (I'm an unabashed NPR *and* social science geek). So it pleases me to no end to see that picture of Kai Ryssdal. Everyone else looks as I would expect them, although I always thought the Car Talk guys would look a little more like the guys in the old 'Da Bears' sketches on SNL. Knowing Carl Kasell looks like he sounds just makes my day. I also can't stand Prairie Home Companion, but I love their annual joke show. I will have to become a convert eventually since I'm married to a part-Scandinavian who has extensive, extended family in Minnesota, and deep Lutheran roots. It is unfortunately my fate to one day succumb to the banal witticisms of Garrison Keillor.

I will probably forward this post on to others today. White, liberal thirty-something stereotypes unite! Did I mention that I have an old Volvo station wagon sitting in my driveway that we're just waiting to donate to the local jazz radio station, an Oregon Public Broadcasting affiliate? Full cred here!

Posted by: katy at April 13, 2011 1:15 PM

Also, what about Lakshmi Singh? With that name, I assume she's an Indian hottie.

Posted by: Slash at April 13, 2011 1:18 PM

Posted by: Slash at April 13, 2011 1:22 PM

Diane Rehm is a silver fox! I stumbled upon her image when I was wiki-crastinating and was floored that she didn't look ridden hard and put away wet, which is coincidentally what I'd do to either one of the Iras (Glass or Flatow) given half a chance.

Posted by: UMG at April 13, 2011 1:24 PM

Terry Gross was so ill prepared and off base with her recent interview of Green Day's Billy Joe Armstrong that I have a hard time listening to her interview anyone at all anymore.

Posted by: ed newman at April 13, 2011 1:26 PM

Sooo feeling kind of stupid that I don't listen to the radio anymore.

I blame my college, which plays the local classic rock station ad nauseum.

Although I don't object to some squawking country music to get me out of bed each morning.

Eddie Izzard screaming that I should get up wasn't helping.

Posted by: grace b at April 13, 2011 1:27 PM

Diane Rehm does look amazing, given what her voice sounds like. I can't listen to her. I can't stand her or radio call-ins; a dark room with Diane Rehm taking calls from Gary in Detroit and Mary-Beth in Athol is my own version of hell.

Posted by: Internet Magpie at April 13, 2011 1:29 PM

Alas, Slash, "Lakshmi Singh" roughly translates to "Esmerelda Dickbreath" in English, so don't get your hopes up.

:(

Posted by: Kballs at April 13, 2011 1:29 PM

ed, last year she interviewed Colin Firth for A Single Man, and the first five minutes were literally her gushing about/fishing for dish re: Jon Hamm (he does voice work in the film). Firth was so nice about it, and I can't really blame her about wanting to know about HAMM, but oh, Diane. You're a professional. Also, Firth is as foxy, if not more so, and he's right in front of you.

Posted by: Internet Magpie at April 13, 2011 1:32 PM

Did you hear Terry Gross interview Timothy Olyphant the other week? He was clearly laughing up his sleeve at her awkward fangirl questions. It was painful to behold.

Posted by: AM at April 13, 2011 1:34 PM

I'm sorry, I was reading down the comments while quietly humming the All Things Considered theme "DO do do do DO do DOOOOOOO" And I noticed a comment that disparaged Carl Kassel. That of course can't be right, because if you badmouth Carl, it is ON! The day I finally get that man's voice on my answering machine is the day I will encourage telemarketers, insurance salesmen and my alma mater to call me just to hear his dulcet tones. Don't think that just because I own a coffee mug AND a tote bag that I will not fuck your shit up. Of course I will then push for you to get healthcare, as well as a scream singer for rehab.

Posted by: Mrcreosote at April 13, 2011 1:36 PM

"I expected some kind of shriveled, near-death gorgon with leathery skin and a crown of thinning blue hair."

THIS. Is so true. That picture of Rehm was probably taken back in 1640 when she arrived at ye olde Ellis Islande for the first time.

Also to the Kye Risdall fans: anyone know what happened to Davis Broncaccio? He used to host Marketplace and now he does occasional reports for Risdall but does he have a full-time job?

Posted by: PaddyDog at April 13, 2011 1:40 PM

I don't mean to brag, but I totally teach English to Michele Norris's nephew.

Posted by: Chris at April 13, 2011 1:43 PM

I just scrolled through again... Apparently, to work in radio, you need to have a really weak chin.

Posted by: Internet Magpie at April 13, 2011 1:45 PM

Hey you buttholes, if you listened to the Diane Rhem show more you would have known that she has a problem with her voicebox. She goes away for treatments all the time.

Dang, I thought I'd be amongst kindred spirits on here with the NPR dorkery.

Posted by: AM at April 13, 2011 1:57 PM

That is NOT how I imagined the car talk guys to look.

Posted by: DeistBrawler at April 13, 2011 1:57 PM

Kai Rysdall looks exactly like I imagined, as does Carl Kasell (seriously, how else would he look)? Both Terry Gross and Diane Rehm shocked me, I would have reversed their general appearances in my head (also, AM, whether you know about Rehm's health troubles or not, she's been in radio for like 50 years -- it is surprising she's a damn silver fox). "Click and Clack" look half-right, the one who looks like a college Poetry professor is the wrong half. Peter Sagal is the most disappointing, though, I kind of thought he looked like Jonathan Silverman. For some reason.

Also, yeah, that entire first paragraph sounds exactly like me, Dustin. Get out of my head. Or, buy me drinks first.

Posted by: RobP at April 13, 2011 2:15 PM

Not bad looking for radio folks. I'll never forget how crushed I was when I finally saw the sultry-voiced woman from my favorite "morning zoo" radio show. She looked like the secret love child of Ernest Borgnine and Lisa Lampanelli.

Posted by: The Mutt at April 13, 2011 2:29 PM

Guy. Raz.

Posted by: countfosco at April 13, 2011 2:36 PM

@Nimue -

Might I recommend podcasts? I no longer drive during the times my favorite NPR shows are on so I download them (for free!) from iTunes and put them on my ipod to listen to when I please. I don't know what I'd do without them as it makes the hellish subway commutes so much easier.

@Stoatcat

I too am always surprised by Jad Abumrad's appearance and pictured someone like Tori instead. He definitely has a cuter voice than face (not that I don't adore him and want to marry him anyway)..

Posted by: beckster at April 13, 2011 2:39 PM

I love, love, love, love, love this list.

That is all.

Posted by: Skyler Durden at April 13, 2011 2:39 PM

RobP, you have exactly pinpointed my inchoate thoughts about Peter Sagal's imagined face. He sounds about 20 years younger than he looks, too. Now I just wish I didn't know.

Posted by: AM at April 13, 2011 2:45 PM

More of my thoughts (I have many thoughts about NPR programming). In my mind Garrison Keillor looks like an aging Abraham Lincoln, and still does despite my having seen him in person. Cognitive dissonance which I am able to subdue yay!

Posted by: AM at April 13, 2011 2:47 PM

Aw, this is exactly what I needed today! Kai Ryssdal is the reason I passed my AP Econ class in high school, I knew enough about the then current market conditions to squeeze out some sympathy points for extra credit. And this is why NRP must no be defunded! Smartass kids need to be able show off in class!

My favorite name ever is Ofeibea Quist-Arcton. I love the way she says "Dakar".

http://www.npr.org/people/4513318/ofeibea-quist-arcton

Posted by: Bodhi at April 13, 2011 2:55 PM

There's just something so very cute about Kai Rysdall, both as a speaker and as a photograph. My crush on Ira Glass has existed forever, but Rysdall definitely started gaining a lead back when I had a car and NPR was my life-soundtrack.

My feelings about Keillor have always been mixed, but there is a photograph of me somewhere with him. When we met, he immediately spotted my violin hickey (For those that don't know, violinists and violists often have a hickey-looking dark mark or two on their neck where the instrument makes contact with the skin. Not to be outdone, some cellists have a dent in their chest.) and declared oh-so-happily, "You are a violinist! You have the mark! Excellent!"

A high point in life right there. I found out later that apparently his wife is a violinist.

Posted by: kiyo-chan at April 13, 2011 3:40 PM

AM, I listen to NPR a ton, but I missed that note on Diane Rehm. Thanks for the info.

Posted by: TWoP_Fan at April 13, 2011 3:43 PM

Bodhi, I was coming back to post that exact thing about Ofeibea. I want her to read books to me.

So instead, here's http://www.npr.org/people/4462099/lourdes-garcia-navarro

Posted by: Captain Tuttle at April 13, 2011 4:33 PM

I am very sorry that Diane Rehm has a disorder that causes her to sound that way. I didn't know that since they don't carry her show on my NPR station so I only hear her intermittently. I'm sorry sincerely if my comment was mean.

That being noted however, it is radio and I find her really tough to listen to because all you have is the voice. It's just not an enjoyable show when you have to struggle so hard with listening to the question. I will try to give her a fairer hearing from now on.

Posted by: PaddyDog at April 13, 2011 5:01 PM

Bodhi
I love her too! & I LOVE that NPR has a dedicated Africa correspondent as well.

Also love the way Sylvia Poggioli says "Sylvia Poggioli"

Does anyone remember if they all still read the declaration of independence?

Posted by: IneptFake at April 13, 2011 5:04 PM

Actually I was afraid to open this article because my father is a radio announcer and he definitely does not look like he sounds, so I know how disappointing it can be to see a radio hero in person. NPR makes life in Tulsa worth living, and I was really hoping none of them were gargoyles.

Not only are they not gargoyles but...wow. Ira Glass kinda leaves me wishing I could, you know, see him without his glasses. Rawr.

Posted by: NoFrank at April 13, 2011 5:11 PM

Oh - and I forgot to mention re GK: The Man on the Radio in Red Shoes.

it's on netflix instant (at least it was a few months ago)

Mostly I took from it that he is a really old dad, but it was interesting to watch him and parts of the show rather than the usual imagining and listening.

Two vignettes from the 4 CD set of particular note: he visits an apartment from his days as a young man, 1/2 hoping to see a woman he fell in love with there, and the other about when his young daughter fell ill and he worried she might not make it.

Obviously, I am no writer, but I do appreciate good stories (does this explain why I'm still mostly loyal to Stephen King? dunno) As annoying as GK's smug-sounding voice can be, he does tell a fabulous story.

Posted by: IneptFake at April 13, 2011 5:21 PM

I'm debating whether or not to show this post to the mister. He's got such a crush on Kai Rysdall's voice, he's mentioned not wanting to know what he looks like, just in case it ruins it for him. Hmmm. Decisions.

Posted by: Sara H at April 13, 2011 5:35 PM

Kai Risdall... oh how your voice makes me want to do bad, bad things to you. His vacation days make my hooha so sad.

Posted by: Lady Lobo at April 13, 2011 5:58 PM

I've finally done it. I've reached the edge of my whiteness. That was a long trip. I'm glad that I brought lots of sunscreen.

Posted by: branded at April 13, 2011 5:58 PM

I was shocked by only two of those, though none were really how I pictured.

Terry Gross was far less attractive than I pictured. The other shock was Diane Rehm. Not because she looks so great, but because it's clearly an oooold picture. I know she has a voice condition that makes her sound like great-granny, but she is indeed 75 years old.

Diane Rehm has this . . reputation as a good interviewer, but I have personally believed she sucks more than Larry King. She softballs and is totally unable to follow up except in the broadest terms.

Terry Gross can be hit or miss. I loved the stuff she did with Jon Stewart at the 92nd street Y this winter, but it was because it was Stewart, not because of her abilities because she went total fangirl. At the same time, she has taken apart Gene Simmons on air delightfully. Oh, and that gorgeous voice is only 4'11" something.

My wife chuckles when she hears Lachmi Singh's name - but she's cute.

And Garrison makes me ashamed to have a beard.

Posted by: idiosynchronic at April 13, 2011 7:47 PM

No love for Mr. Simon hosting Weekend Edition--he's THE MAN! And a great interviewer, I believe.

Posted by: vllach at April 13, 2011 9:39 PM

Also, I think Jad Abumrad is really cute. He looks exactly how he sounds to me.

Posted by: It's just so.... at April 14, 2011 1:52 AM

I have a particular seething hatred for Garrison Keillor. My local NPR station runs his Writer's Almanac piece about the time I'm heading to work, and if there's a more maudlin, patronizing, masturbatory radio segment on the air I don't know about it. I don't need to be depressed about this obscure poem written by some douche who committed suicide three days later, at 6:30 in the morning. I usually am forced to switch to the morning zoo crew on the local soft rock station just to give myself some respite from the cloying mountain of suck from that man.

Plus Prairie Home Companion isn't funny. At all.

Posted by: ASterisk at April 14, 2011 8:21 AM

@tao ... Steve Inskeep kind of looks like Chris Hansen from Dateline.

This post actually made my morning. I listen to "Morning Edition" on the way to work, after I drop my daughter at school. I can't listen to it with her in the car because she bitches and whines and wants me to play Justin Bieber (ugh!). Knowing that Steve Inskeep is kinda hot will make listening to him even more delightful. Diane Rehm is actually quite lovely, as is Michele Norris.
And I love that Carl Kassel looks exactly like he sounds.

Posted by: Carolina Girl at April 14, 2011 11:47 AM

I love Ira Glass, he is so adorable, both of voice and face.

I'm disappointed that Ira Flatow wasn't included in your roster - I've actually looked him up myself before out of curiosity.

I'm shocked to see that Diane Rehm isn't 90 years old, but in truth her show would be boring even if her voice sounded more youthful. And yes, Prairie Home Companion is a terrible show.

Posted by: that girl at April 14, 2011 1:51 PM

I thought I was the only one who hated A Prairie Home Companion to such an extent. I cannot STAND that show. The voices, the musical guests, the...the embarrassing skits.

I also hate it when I can't explain why I dislike something so trivial so much.

Oh, and Kai Ryssdal looks exactly as he should. That man's voice is wonderful.

Posted by: Vince Noir at April 14, 2011 2:07 PM

As a former NPR employee (not in anything exciting or media-related), a few corrections:

Diane Rehm: Not an NPR personality. She's a WAMU personality. WAMU is an NPR affiliate.

Terry Gross: Not an NPR personality. She's a WHYY personality. "Fresh Air" is distributed by NPR, but it is not an NPR product.

Ira Glass: Not an NPR personality. He's a WBEZ personality. "This American Life" is distributed through Public Radio International, not through NPR.

Garrison Keillor: Not an NPR personality. He's an MPR personality: Minnesota Public Radio.

The confusion is that you hear all of these folks on stations that carry NPR programs; however, in these cases, NPR may only help distribute or may not have any involvement at all.

Posted by: Mike B. at April 14, 2011 4:39 PM

I think Garrison Keillor and Rainn Wilson could be long lost brothers.

http://www.2flashgames.com/photo/rainn_wilson/big_Rainn_Wilson_0006.htm

Also Prairie Home Companion is incredible. That is all.

Posted by: Terence at April 14, 2011 11:11 PM

Bodhi, YES! I love how she says "Dakaaaaaaaaa". I used to listen during my ridiculously early morning commute, though, so I was usually pretty spaced out and never paid enough attention to catch her name, I would just suddenly hear her say "Dakaaaaaaa" and realize I'd missed her once again.

I have some major Garrison Keillor love, for the Writer's Almanac, which used to come on at 8pm in NYC and would always be playing in the kitchen while I was making dinner and feeling disgruntled about living in a concrete wasteland that kicked my ass on a daily basis. It brought some much needed humanity to my day. I don't hate PHC but I definitely don't get it.

And Diane Rehm is HOT. I knew about her vocal problems but I still expected her to be 8,000 years old.

Posted by: Cara at April 15, 2011 6:24 AM

Honestly, what's with the PHC hate?! I grew up listening to that show, lulled by the dulcet rhythms of GKs voice. Yeah, you heard me, I said dulcet!

When I heard he was retiring from the show, I was...saddened. Honestly, there were tears.

I am truly curious, what's your beef with Garrison?!
