Which of Johnny Depp's Leading Ladies Has Actually Aged Better than Depp?

By Dustin Rowles | Posted Under Seriously Random Lists | Comments (48)

One cannot reasonably argue that Johnny Depp has not aged at all during his 25 year acting career. But one can argue that the man has aged very well. The man is approaching 50 and is as good looking as ever.

Not so much for his leading ladies over the years. In fact, Johnny Depp may be stealing the youth of his female co-stars in order to maintain his good looks. But, one of these women has actually managed to age better than Depp.

Juliette Binoche in Chocolat

I think we have a winner in Juliette, who looks as splendid today as she did then, and this is true even though she’s the only woman on this list who is actually older than Depp. Maybe it’s because she’s French. Not coincidentally, Johnny Depp lives in France? The jambon et fromage must be keeping the French looking so very vibrant and youthful.

Oh, come ON. You're really going to deny Charlize? You should have picked a far less flattering photo.

As for the other Juliette, he apparently stole her feminine wiles as well. JEE-zus. She looks like Billy Squier.

Theron, Graham, Ryder and Rici are all far better looking than Depp in 2011. Those photos you chose for them are terrible.....

Posted by: steve at December 1, 2011 12:50 AM

Yeah, just based on the photos Charlize and Heather Graham are both doing well...

Posted by: Iheartlasagne at December 1, 2011 12:52 AM

Well, you found damn near the worst possible photos of everyone BUT Binoche, but it's probably true anyway. She looks better now than she did 20 years ago. I think Winona still looks great, but have you heard her voice? She sounds like a 70-year-old woman.

Is that a mugshot of Locane?

Posted by: Arran at December 1, 2011 1:01 AM

Wait this is so weird I just saw 'my week with Marilyn' and I wa thinking how Juliette binoche looked SO old she had wrinkles tht a 70 yr old would have.... I was legitimately wondering if they put old age makeup on her and now I'm really thinking they must have or you picked the wrong lady! And are you kidding me about Charlize, christina, and heather??!! Heather looks about 28 and shes like 45!

Posted by: Anna at December 1, 2011 1:31 AM

Dustin, you chose terrible photos for most of these ladies. But Christina Ricci looks like she's in her 20s and Juliette Binoche is a stone cold fox. I would also argue that Juliette Lewis and Charlize have aged better than Depp.

I never really saw the appeal of Johnny Depp, but he looks like a puffy faced old lady now.

scraaaaaaaaaaatch tht just realized tht it is julia ormond in my week with marilyn whoooops

this is a post i can't get behind. sorry, rowles, but.. disappointment.

I, like others, often have quibbles with certain entries on certain lists, but I don't often find fault with the concept of the entire list like I do with this one. In the last three years Johnny Depp has aged about 20, and the man seems to be under the impression that dressing like a Seattle barista who stole Elton John's sunglasses is a good way to retain one's youth. Many of the women on this list, on the other hand, look fantastic in 2011 -- these photos notwithstanding.

Posted by: Amanda6 at December 1, 2011 4:33 AM

Charlize looks the same. This is a sad post. I don't see anything wrong with Heather or Christina and I don't understand the diss of my B-Girl Juliette as well.

P.S. Johnny would look better if he bathed.

Posted by: Candy at December 1, 2011 4:56 AM

I've never found SJP very attractive, so that's basically a wash for me. I think Ricci, Graham, Charlize (!!!), and Juliette Binoche look fantastic, but only Juliette Lewis really looks significantly worse for the wear to me. (I'm not counting the first one since it appears to be a mugshot from her manslaughter arrest :X) Mary Stuart Masterson looks her age, but that's so refreshing -- she's aging WELL and naturally. (I'm sorry, for me she will always be Idgie and I can't help but love her!)

To be fair, I don't love Johnny Depp as much as I used to before the Pirates franchise (blech) and the last few Burton movies, which have been inexplicably bizarre for me -- I normally love Tim and Johnny, and perhaps I just had my hopes set too high, but Alice in Wonderland was enormously disappointing.

P.S. I was curious about their ages so I Googled them, and it looks like Juliette Binoche is actually a few months younger than Johnny.

Posted by: Colin at December 1, 2011 5:57 AM

I think we need to take Johnny Depp's teeth into account here. If he were smiling he'd be behind just about every woman on this list. They all look great.

Posted by: Aaron at December 1, 2011 6:48 AM

That has to be the worst photo of Winona Ryder ever taken, she's still very beautiful. I think they all look good, actually. Ricci looks better than she did in her youth and Juliette Lewis has kind of grown on me after I spent years thinking she was one of the homeliest actresses I had ever seen... I see her now and think she looks like someone I'd like to have a beer with because she's just bursting with vitality and joy.

Posted by: snapnhiss at December 1, 2011 7:53 AM

This is a wonky post. I'm feeling a littl grossed out by the double standard. Most of these women look lovely. Christina Ricci looks adorable and Heather Graham...? Have you seen that woman's body? Smokin. Depp is a nice looking man whose youthful baby-faced good looks are paying off for him. PLUS he dresses sort of young, too. But lets not kid ourselves. Many of these ladies look amazing too. Charlise? Get real. Lovely woman.

Posted by: klingonfree at December 1, 2011 8:25 AM

Ageist, sexist, stupid post. People get older. Depp and all the ladies look great. That's what "approaching 50" looks like.

Posted by: xoxoxoe at December 1, 2011 8:33 AM

Johnny Depp is objectively attractive, yes, but he still looks like he's in a race to out-stink Vincent Gallo. I look at Johnny Depp and I see this guy (somewhat NSFW for cartoon creepiness).

Posted by: Craig at December 1, 2011 8:42 AM

And either hyperlinks are disabled, or I don't know HTML as well as I thought I did. Let's try this again (just as NSFW as before).

Posted by: Craig at December 1, 2011 8:45 AM

I think part of the problem, at least for the American actresses, is the pressure on them to be thinner than the average stick. I've noticed that very thin women just look hard when they age - if that makes sense. They lose whatever softness youth may have given them, and just look gaunt and unhealthy. To me, at least. And I'm speaking as a 40+ year old woman who is facing the fact that I'm no fresh-faced spring chickie myself. Luckily, I'm also a bit chubby, so the hardness isn't much of a factor. It looks like some of the ladies have found the happy medium, and it looks lovely on them.

Posted by: Captain Tuttle at December 1, 2011 9:12 AM

I hadn't seen Mary Stuart Masterson for a while. I think she looks great.

Posted by: Steph at December 1, 2011 9:18 AM

Shenanigans! I call Shenanigans!

Christina Ricci, Heather Graham, and especially Charlize Theron are looking better than ever!

Posted by: Meander at December 1, 2011 9:45 AM

Charlize Theron hasn't just aged well, she actually looks better than any of the other women's younger photos.

You chose candids for every other actress' recent photo except Binoche, where you chose an incredibly airbrushed magazine photo. Weird list.

Posted by: becks at December 1, 2011 9:50 AM

Why didn't you use a picture of what Depp really looks like right now? Which is a gross, nasty, bloated, greasy mess.

Don't you mean James Spader?

Posted by: Jast at December 1, 2011 10:07 AM

Totally un-Pajibaworthy post. Seriously. SERIOUSLY.

Posted by: addicted at December 1, 2011 10:24 AM

Yeah, I don't normally take issue with the entire concept of a post here, but this is kind of stupid. "Aging well" does not mean "not aging." Guess what? People get older! Mary Stuart Masterson has visibly aged in the past twenty years (shocker!) but she looks lovely in her more recent picture. Christina Ricci now looks 30 instead of 18, but she's just as attractive as she was in Sleepy Hollow.

And as others have pointed out: current beauty standards mean that women age less well than men most of the time, because a) we expect them to remain super thin, which means that their faces show age faster than they would if they had more fat on them, and b) wrinkles on a woman are always considered unsightly whereas on men they're frequently seen as hot (see: love for older George Clooney over younger George Clooney, number of people who began to find Leo attractive when he lost the baby face, Harrison Ford in general, etc.).

Posted by: Artemis at December 1, 2011 10:44 AM

Also, Amy Locane looks shockingly good in her more recent picture considering it's a mug shot, which are universally unflattering.

Posted by: Artemis at December 1, 2011 10:48 AM

There there, Charlize, c'mere and let me hug you. Don't you believe what that bad, bad, terrible, BAD man wrote for a second, honey. What does HE know anyway? Does HE get to be the gorgeous queen in a Sleeping Beauty movie? NO! Now now, don't cry, c'mon, kisses make everything better. Mmmm ... mmmm ... There, see? And you know what else makes everything better? A good piledriving fuck.

Posted by: , at December 1, 2011 11:00 AM

So, why did you pick the worst pictures you could find of most of the ladies?

The picture you posted of her aside, I still think Juliette Lewis looks way better now than she ever did before. She may actually get better looking every year.

Posted by: Still Cathy After All These Years at December 1, 2011 11:02 AM

Yeah, I retract my stupid Juliette Lewis comment - that's just a bad (and badly cropped) photo. She looks great and her music videos are hilarious!

As for SJP... I really hate snarking on celebrities for their looks. I think my distaste for her started with that fucking awful character she played in The Family Stone. It's like a bad taste in my mouth whenever I see her that I can't wash away.

Posted by: Colin at December 1, 2011 11:17 AM

Isn't Christina Ricci only 30 or so in the first place? And frankly, Charlize Theron will continue to look incredible even at 70. I suspect she'll be my children's generation's Helen Mirren.

Ryder and Graham both look MUCH younger than their actual ages.

Posted by: Bert at December 1, 2011 11:33 AM

Winona Ryder still looks good to me.

Man I wish she was in more movies.

Posted by: John W at December 1, 2011 12:13 PM

I think the problem with Ricci and Ryder is that they're so skinny, they look chinny and starved. I think if they were to put on at least ten pounds, they'd look more healthy (like Charlize) an less pinched.

Posted by: bonnie at December 1, 2011 12:37 PM

*and

Posted by: bonnie at December 1, 2011 12:38 PM

Binoche's picture is heavily photoshopped, while those of the other ladies are without photoshop or the benifit of lighting.

All in all Charlize, Graham and Winona look better than Binoche (considering their photos are off red carpet, whereas Binoche's is from a magazine/professional shoot)

Posted by: sara at December 1, 2011 12:44 PM

That picture of Winona was obviously picked because it made her look old - that picture is more than five years old. I saw a picture of her at the SAG awards earlier this year and she still looks 25. Good job on going out of your way to manipulate a response from your readers, Pajiba. So crass and unlike you guys.

Posted by: Julian at December 1, 2011 1:22 PM

You know Dustin, I saw this again this morning and it just made me sad. I expect a lot better of Pajiba, and of you, than this. I'll get over it, but I hope that as someone who likes to think of himself as at least a little aware of "women's issues," you're re-evaluating whatever made you think this was a good idea.

Posted by: Amanda6 at December 1, 2011 2:09 PM

All of these woman appear to be aging naturally with minimal if any plastic surgery. They all look great. As for Depp, he hasn't really floated my boat since the second Pirates movie.

Posted by: FyreHaar at December 1, 2011 2:49 PM

I wanna party with all these people. Even SJP. She looks kinda angry in the above picture, but in every interview I've ever seen of her (TV talk shows), she's delightful.

Posted by: Slash at December 1, 2011 2:57 PM

Sorry, wrong. I love Juliette Binoche, and she is beautiful and aging gracefully but I saw Charlize Theron in person this past Sunday (Young Adult screening). She was fighting a cold, and in spite of that, still stunning. Plus, WInona will always be amazing and Christina Ricci looks great! Actually they all look pretty great.

Posted by: bdog at December 1, 2011 5:02 PM

Except poor Amy Locane, of course.

Posted by: bdog at December 1, 2011 5:03 PM

This is some bullshit. ALL those women look great to me. Seriously! I will consider myself blessed indeed if I look half as great as any of them when I'm in my 40's or 50's. Sheesh, Rowles. Did ya run this by your wife by any chance? No? Well, that might be why your nuts aren't throbbing right now.

Posted by: AM at December 1, 2011 6:24 PM

I agree this article is bullshit.

Pajiba you are being LAME.

Posted by: PonyOfPonies at December 1, 2011 10:54 PM

Pajiba, I've been coming here since the '06s but recent posts like this make me like you less and less. This would have never been posted in the Alabama Pink days.

I miss the smart.

Goodbye Pajiba.

Posted by: PonyOfPonies at December 1, 2011 10:56 PM

For the love of God, stop using Alabama Pink's memory to try to invoke shame because you don't like something you saw on the internet. It's shallow, craven, and manipulative. There are people here who knew her and still miss her to this day, and there are much more respectful and respectable ways to get your point across.

Posted by: Craig at December 1, 2011 11:27 PM

I am offended you think that. I wasn't being disrespectful or manipulative towards her memory. I have never before mentioned her name post-humously in a post, so no need to tell me to "stop."

Craig, I miss her too. Was stating that name as a time period was a time in which Pajiba was awesome, the absolute best place for a great/hilarious/thought-provoking conversation on the internet. The articles drove the conversation. I miss those articles and those conversations dearly and have stopped posting in recent years.

This article. Less awesome. Other articles recently, very unawesome. Pajiba is becoming shallow. I am saying goodbye.

Posted by: PonyofPonies at December 2, 2011 1:47 PM

Wow, this "OMG women get old and UG-LAY!" post does not seem very substantive or useful for Pajiba--I know, I know, they can't all be gems, but it's really jarring to decry women for aging and then point to France (of all things) as the reason for Binoche's eternal attractiveness. Perhaps it's the lack of the Great American Obsession with Youth? Jeez, that's well-worn.

It's actually kind of a testament to these women that they all look really good, even though DR seemingly attempted to find the least flattering pictures for most.

Posted by: seed at December 3, 2011 6:00 PM

I admire Depp for going after mostly risky non-traditional roles and movies, but once I saw Leo act the pants off of him in Gilbert Grape I've kind of been off the Johnny wagon.
Also, he is starting to look like a lesbian.

Posted by: dagnabbit at December 6, 2011 6:18 PM

You can't tell by these pictures some are airbrushed smooth like Juliet Binoche. She is getting rather old looking, watch her movie "Certified Copy" to see
