Which "Friend" Has Aged the Best?

By Dustin Rowles | Posted Under Seriously Random Lists | Comments (65)

Matt LeBlanc is starring in a new Showtime series, “Episodes,” this fall, and the show looks fantastic. Basically, LeBlanc plays himself — he’s been cast as the lead in an American adaptation of a British sitcom. He’s the American dumbed down version of the British lead, and the fact that LeBlanc basically allows himself to be the show’s punchline automatically affords him some additional respect.

Anyway, this morning I saw several images of LeBlanc from the show, and I couldn’t help but notice that the man has aged rather gracefully. So, in light of that fact — and the fact that David Schwimmer is obviously the favorite “Friend” among our British readers — I thought we’d take a poll. After all that heaviness yesterday, I think we all deserve a very shallow, superficial post. Don’t you think?

Which “Friend” has aged the best?

I love that for this poll you use a nice, flattering photo of LeBlanc and the worst, no-makeup, baggy clothes, bad-hair-day pics you can find of the rest. Hee.

I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'.

I think they all look good. Schwimmer's not cute to begin with, so he didn't have as far to fall.

Posted by: samantha t at August 4, 2010 11:38 AM

HA Dustin! Those non-LeBlanc photos are hilarious! Thanks for the late-morning cackle.

Posted by: tamatha at August 4, 2010 11:43 AM

I was not attracted to Leblanc in the past. I am now. Love the silver!

Thank you for the reminder.

Wouldn't you say it's time for your botox top-up, Lisa?

Posted by: SB at August 4, 2010 11:47 AM

No bias in photo choices here. No sir.

Posted by: Littlejon2001 at August 4, 2010 11:48 AM

I'm on Pajiba, and Paul Rudd isn't an option? Butthole.

Posted by: branded at August 4, 2010 11:48 AM

I love the contrast between the attractive LeBlanc photo and the others which appear to be the skankiest possible choices. I think I'd still pick LeBlanc, though. He's a cutie pie and I do love the touch of grey. He is a case for why men SHOULD NOT dye their hair when they get a little grey. I so hate those men's hair-dye commercials but I'll try not to go off on that rant just now....

Posted by: pickled tink at August 4, 2010 11:49 AM

Oh, come on! That Jennifer Aniston picture is from "The Good Girl", where she had to look disheveled.

Yes, I am taking this seriously.

Posted by: Sofía at August 4, 2010 11:50 AM

Oh, and what is he doing to that woman's hair? Because it makes me think of hair-washing and I have this little fantasy about hair-washing. It used to involve Robert Redford (Out of Africa, anyone? http://img2.timeinc.net/ew/dynamic/imgs/071025/outofafrica_l.jpg) but now maybe I'll invite Matt LeBlanc into the fantasy instead. After all Redford is all kinds of old now--he is still alive right? I think so--but old. But another sexy dude with his hands all up in my hair--that's good stuff. Mmmmmm.

Posted by: pickled tink at August 4, 2010 11:53 AM

Well, shoot, my picture link didn't work. Just Google "robert redford out of africa hair-washing" and you'll see.

Posted by: pickled tink at August 4, 2010 11:54 AM

Re: Courtney Cox.

People who maintain an unnaturally low weight don't age well (emphasis on unnaturally).

Posted by: ERM at August 4, 2010 11:55 AM

I agree the survey is tilted. But LeBlanc still wins.
Is Cox in prison in that photo or what?

Posted by: Odnon. at August 4, 2010 11:56 AM

Dear Ms. Julien,
Me too.
That's all. Thanks.

Posted by: esme at August 4, 2010 12:00 PM

Love it -- the photos are the visual equivalent of a GOP push pull!

Posted by: Steve at August 4, 2010 12:06 PM

obviously unfair but other than Lisa Kudrow..he is the least annoying

Posted by: thedistrictkid at August 4, 2010 12:16 PM

I thought Cox looked good in those post-Friends shows she's done that no one watches.

Posted by: Harry Coverts at August 4, 2010 12:26 PM

I've been going through a Friends kick lately. I still love it as much as I ever did.

Posted by: SB at August 4, 2010 11:47 AM

Considering Kudrow just turned 48 and was the oldest when the show was going, isn't this poll a little unfair? Plus I don't think she and the other non-LeBlancs are wearing much makeup in their photos, which would probably be a better first step than Botox.

Also, Botox doesn't do much for neck wrinkles. That said, I really don't think any of the Friends need the Lifestyle Lift yet.

Posted by: LibraryChick at August 4, 2010 12:27 PM

They all look like SHIT, Aniston especially, no wonder Brad went for something much, much, better.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at August 4, 2010 12:37 PM

...no wonder Brad went for something much, much, better.

Ouch!
*quietly edges closer to the exit door in anticipation of hell breaking loose*

Posted by: SB at August 4, 2010 12:53 PM

Something with freakishly large hands and feet? Ugh. No one ever notices that Angelina Jolie has the body of a scarecrow. Okay maybe she has big boobs. Or maybe she just pads that shit. Do you ever see any cleavage with her? No. Do you ever see anything but lots of clever draping? She has a beautiful face but there's a reason you never see much of her body.

Posted by: AM at August 4, 2010 1:15 PM

I give the edge to Jennifer Aniston but realistically they've all aged well.

Posted by: John W at August 4, 2010 1:15 PM

Posted by: adam at August 4, 2010 1:23 PM

I never watched Friends, so I have no idea who these people are. Anyway . . .

"Only on Showtime, EPISODES tells the surely-to-be-hilarious tale of a British husband-and-wife comedy team (Played by Stephen Mangan and Tamsin Grieg) whose hit UK show about a headmaster of a boy’s boarding school (Played by Richard Griffiths) is turned into a dumbed-down American sitcom starring LeBlanc (He’s a hockey coach in PUCKS!)."

Richard Griffiths? Mr. Dursley? The gay uncle in Withnail and I? That Richard Griffiths? Matt LeBlanc is playing the American version of Richard Griffiths? Hum - Could be interesting.

Has to be said:

How YOU doin'?

Posted by: TylerDFC at August 4, 2010 1:34 PM

Your picture choices are hilarious.

I think Cox looks great, as do Aniston and LeBlanc (who I've always thought looked a little bit like Frankenstein, and never understood the Joey attraction, but age has been very, very kind to him). Perry's always been really up and down in the looks department, but he's still my favourite Friend.

But wtf happened to Schwimmer?

Posted by: dsbs at August 4, 2010 1:34 PM

Evidence to the contrary

@dsbs Chandler was the cutie!

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at August 4, 2010 1:48 PM

My vote is for Aniston. I know according to Pajiba, I'm supposed to hate her for some reason, but I don't. Also, I always thought Schwimmer was attractive. His pic up top is nothing a better hairstyle couldn't fix.

Posted by: Slash at August 4, 2010 1:57 PM

I'd have to say Lisa Kudrow, just because she doesn't look any different from how I remember her in Friends

Posted by: Mr. Patches at August 4, 2010 1:58 PM

I saw Matthew Perry after we all got out of How to Train Your Dragon (weird, I know) and he actually looked pretty good. I was always partial to Chandler, anyway. He was rocking the middle-aged gray-tinged look and wasn't nearly as... jowly... as that pic.

Posted by: whatBENwatches at August 4, 2010 2:12 PM

Have you SEEN Courtney Cox in Cougar Town? (Yes, I love it, shut up). The woman has had some seriously good work done. Also? Better body today than she had in Friends.
Also:
" David Schwimmer is obviously the favorite “Friend” among our British readers"
Not in my household. Dear god, not in my household.

Posted by: squeeziee at August 4, 2010 2:17 PM

Ugh. That's how I feel about Friends. Could not understand why it got so much hype. Also I have a friend who loves it and that makes me dislike it that much more.

LeBlanc wins. He was always the funniest and now he is aging quite well. Even though I do love a skinny Matthew Perry.

Posted by: grace b at August 4, 2010 2:25 PM

Dang, Joey, not bad. You look much better now than you did in some of the latter seasons where you were all bloated and gross but still pretending to be 27. The gray hair is really dashing.

I love the photos. Hee. Courtney Cox is beautiful, though, even if she's had work done.

Posted by: figgy at August 4, 2010 2:58 PM

not really what you're going for....but i like how they all look like everyday people here. not plastic "Celebrities".
schwimmer looks like a grouch/drag though. (and aniston obviously looks like she in character. couldn't find a better pic huh?)

Posted by: maxpurr9 at August 4, 2010 3:08 PM

You know what would be interesting to see (though maybe just to me because I have nothing better to do) is a pictorial of the weight fluctuations these people went through on the show.

I remember Perry was particularly obvious--he would be really pudgy one episode, then skinny the next...there was a season where he looked TERRIBLE. I think it was because he was on some weird meds or something, but it was really obvious and distracting.

And then Cox went through this phase where she was so incredibly thin that she looked unnatractive. And they made her wear these really tight outfits and turtlenecks and she just didn't look good. And Schwimmer definitely got bigger, Kudrow stayed the same and Aniston definitely lost some weight as she got along.

OK maybe this is just interesting to me. 7 years change people is the obvious answer. I just think it's fun to compare the older seasons to the newer ones.

Posted by: figgy at August 4, 2010 3:09 PM

I'm actually 12, but I pass for 40. Too much drinking, smoking and tanning bed when I was in elementary school...

Posted by: Stinky at August 4, 2010 3:30 PM

Jennifer Aniston doesn't seem to be aging AT ALL so I voted for LeBlanc. I love me some post-rehab, sober Matthew Perry, though.

Posted by: bonnie at August 4, 2010 3:35 PM

I keep thinking Matt LeBlanc is Tony Danza.

Posted by: BWeaves at August 4, 2010 3:52 PM

Matt's series sounds like Ricky Gervais' Extras really. Only a little different.

So, y'know, not exactly the same but POACHED!

Posted by: Wench. at August 4, 2010 4:20 PM

Really, unflattering pics of everyone else and one nice one of Leblanc? A little biased are we?

Fortunately, I've seen tabloids of Aniston and shots of Cox from Cougar Town.

Kudrow looked really worked on when she appeared on Cougar Town, Cox looks good, but a little worked on, so I'd say that Aniston and Leblanc look the best. I voted for Aniston since you rigged the poll in LeBlanc's favor. ;)

Schwimmer and Perry had one too many jelly donuts.

Posted by: Natalie at August 4, 2010 4:21 PM

LeBlanc has recently admitted that he dyed his hair for the entire run of Friends and has only recently let the real salt-n-pepper show. It does look good though, so he got my vote.

Also, because I'm not yet 30 and a full on salt and pepper as well. Started when I was 19 or 20. Fucking genetics.

Posted by: Roaddog at August 4, 2010 4:32 PM

Don't knock genetics. I find grey hair to be extremely sexy.

Posted by: BWeaves at August 4, 2010 4:48 PM

Good hair is good hair grey, silver or otherwise.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at August 4, 2010 4:59 PM

What is he doing to her head, though?

Is he applying 1st aid after she had a hairy spill?

Is he dying HER hair?

Picking nits?

WHAT?

Posted by: GinKirk at August 4, 2010 5:19 PM

Matt LeBlanc looks like Bruce Campbell in the header pic.

Posted by: Lucas at August 4, 2010 6:15 PM

Nice to see you got a shot of Cox leaving the shooting gallery after spending a night in a refrigerator carton. Maybe she'll get off the smack and on some methadone program and get her kids back from CPS.

Posted by: OscarTamerz at August 4, 2010 7:32 PM

Ross looks like a fat Neil Gaiman. Obviously Joey has aged the best because he was always the only actually attractive one.

LeBlanc looks like the "before guy" in a Just For Men commercial. The Schwimmer pic is high-larious.

Posted by: stryker1121 at August 4, 2010 8:42 PM

Oddly enough, LeBlanc's been grey for decades & recently admitted to dying his hair black for the entire run of "Friends."

Posted by: agent bedhead at August 4, 2010 9:46 PM

LOL @ spambot "old folks" usage.

Posted by: Pithy"Name" at August 4, 2010 11:47 PM

Oh God, Matt LeBlanc all the WAY. Now that he has salt and pepper, WHEW. Where's my hankie? Need to fan myself. Where was I?

Ah yes, MATT.

And I was never much of a fan of Friends. It made me cackle here and there, but mostly I thought it was overhyped and I think it's funny that the band that did the theme song fucking HATES the theme song now (and has for years) and can't even stand to hear it.

But I think I was probably a bit bitter. Here were these people--all my age (well, wait....checking IMDB...yes, I'm younger than all of them, but in some cases by only months, so I would be their peer), who lived in this awesome apartment building in New York and were post-college, like I was, but just sort of hung out in a coffee shop all the time and had fun and said clever things and went on dates and had romantic drama.

I realize it was a fictional show and I realize I made my own choices, but at that time, I was a semi-newlywed big pregnant when Friends debuted and was working as a high school teacher while my husband was in the Army pulling 18 hour days and we were far far far from any family or friends.

So I pretty much hated those brats.

Posted by: Maui M at August 5, 2010 3:10 AM

Mrs. Julien - wasn't he, though? Especially for the first 4 seasons, but even after. I was always partial to the hair in season one, though, I have to say. I'm sad it never made a re-appearance.

Posted by: dsbs at August 5, 2010 2:26 PM

Daaamn, LeBlanc. You look so much better older and with grey hair.

Posted by: SaBrina at August 5, 2010 9:02 PM

How the fuck can you say Aniston's aged gracefully? She's done the opposite, and gone down every artificial road necessary to NOT age. The great thing, though, that women like Aniston and Madonna seems to not realise is that if you try to look 30 until you're 60, the transition that eventually comes is terrifying. Not even Madonna can defeat aging, and we're starting to see it now... Jennifer Aniston will go through the same horrifying transition one day when she can't fight the aging process and goes from 50-something trying to look 30 to very suddenly looking 60. And in comparison, she'll look even older.
