Joanna Robinson feels a little bad ragging on people after looking at their Oscar-winning faces. They look so happy! She doesn’t feel bad about Randy Newman, though. She hates that guy.

I don't hate her as a person or anything, but I will never stop being pissed off that Francis McDormand in Fargo beat Emily Watson in Breaking the Waves. Seriously, that was fucked up. Have you seen Breaking the Waves?!? That chick acted her face off.

Posted by: Skyler Durden at February 23, 2011 4:05 PM

You sound short.

Posted by: TheOtherGreg at February 23, 2011 4:05 PM

Nope. Sorry. It'll always be GOOPy for me. I still can't believe that.

Posted by: Kiddo at February 23, 2011 4:08 PM

Randy Newman???!

Excplains, pleez.

Posted by: idiosynchronic at February 23, 2011 4:11 PM

Yep. As I look at the list, the one that really chaps my hide is Miss Gwynnie herself.

Over Cate Blanchett! For Elizabeth! I didn't see the follow-up movie, so you can tell me it was way over the top and a travesty. But the first one was awesome, unbelievablely awesome, and Cate acted her face off.

Posted by: MM at February 23, 2011 4:11 PM

Kiddo - I'm with you, as long as we're not just lashing out at Gwyneth, whom I don't hate. I just really, *really* hate that she won Cate Blanchett's award. She was so very, very excellent in Elizabeth.

Posted by: tamatha at February 23, 2011 4:13 PM

Exactly, MM, exactly!

Posted by: tamatha at February 23, 2011 4:14 PM

I hate that Marisa Tomei won over Mercedes Reuhl that year, but I don't hate her as an actress, or even in that role.

And while I don't hate Shakespeare in Love the way folks around here seem to, I was appalled that Paltrow won over Cate Blanchett, as Elizabeth was a superior movie in every way and Blanchett's portrayal was simply astounding.

Posted by: Reba at February 23, 2011 4:20 PM

I'm never quite sure which pisses me off more: The fact that The English Patient won BP, or that Branagh's Hamlet was so ignored.

Seriously, no one was in the same league as Derek Jacobi that year, and he didn't even get nominated.

Posted by: jthomas666 at February 23, 2011 4:23 PM

Should.have.been.Cate's. SHOULDABEEN!

For the record, I don't "HATE" Gwyneth Paltrow, I don't think she's a *terrible* actress, etc. etc. I think she's an OK-looking, perfectly average actress; I find the GOOP stuff insufferable personally, but hell, it doesn't actually hurt anybody, so I can dial it down to a "meh".

Posted by: MM at February 23, 2011 4:24 PM

Umm, some background? I am confuse.

Posted by: noodlestein at February 23, 2011 4:25 PM

I recently queued up Elliot Smith's performance at the Oscars for "Miss Misery" (thanks, YouTube!) and it was like a kick in the chest for its simplicty, beauty, wonder and pure, raw emotion.

I'm not going to bash Celine Dion or the juggernaut that was Titanic, but there is simply no comparison between the two, and "Miss Misery" is in every way the superior song.

Posted by: twig at February 23, 2011 4:29 PM

I really love Randy Newman. Please to hexplain yarselv.

Also: Paltrow over Blanchett really is THE injustice of our generation, isn't it?

Posted by: Caspar at February 23, 2011 4:31 PM

Left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot.

Oh Randy Newman, how I love you, singing about all the things you see in front of you.

Posted by: thecreepingkid at February 23, 2011 4:35 PM

My wife and I got married to "You've Got a Friend In Me", so you'd better be sliver tongued, Robinson.

Posted by: idiosynchronic at February 23, 2011 4:35 PM

I always thought that Marisa Tomei kind of earned her Oscar retroactively. Miranda Richardson was robbed just the same. She was amazing in what was otherwise a skincrawlingly bad movie.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at February 23, 2011 4:38 PM

"Yooou've gotta fwend in me! You've got a fwend in me! I sound like my mouf's full, alla da time, and you've got a fweeeeeeeeeend in me!"

I'm sure your ceremony was lovely.

Posted by: Johnny Von Awesome at February 23, 2011 4:41 PM

Thank you Joanna.

Randy Newman has the most annoying singing voice of anyone I've every heard in my entire life [and that includes Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and that guy from Nickelback].

Posted by: OldSchool60 at February 23, 2011 4:41 PM

i take it from the comments that the portly dude is randy newman. i didn't know he had anything to do with the motion pictures.

it blows my mind that people remember not only who won what for which years, but who was robbed or not even nominated for same. that's a lot of mental rental. I save that space for important stuff, like comics. and dirty limericks.

Posted by: idleprimate at February 23, 2011 4:43 PM

...sorry I forgot. Even worse than Bruce Cockburns voice.

Posted by: OldSchool60 at February 23, 2011 4:43 PM

Oh thank you, thank you, thank you. I hate Randy Newman's "work". I die more inside every year when great songs are passed over so he can get another award for a saccharine piece of nothing he churned out in ten minutes while sitting on the toilet. I dream at night of taking him and Elton John (post 1980) and making them sit in a small cold room listening to the drivel they've written until their ears bleed. I have never EVER found anyone who agrees with me on this. Until now. I am now your slave eccentric aunt. Do with me as you see fit.

Posted by: PaddyDog at February 23, 2011 4:45 PM

Reese Witherspoon! Paltrow, Reese, and Bullock all fall into the cute women H'wood just love to cuddle. That's a category, you know.

Best Song is a throw away award anyway. Just judge by what's won over the years. Completely inexplicable. Randy Newman's been plugging away writing charming songs that enhance charming films. Let him have his award and let us be happy or at least be apathetic.

Posted by: sittingpat at February 23, 2011 4:49 PM

Didn't Randy Newman win for the theme from Toy Story? How can anyone hate Toy Story??? It's pure freakin' joy! And catchy, despite the anti-Randy vibe.

Posted by: cydeleida at February 23, 2011 4:49 PM

Maybe some of the others would bother me more if I knew who they had been up against. But I watched the Oscars the year Goop won, primarily because I loved Elizabeth so much. I had also seen Shakespeare in Love that year. Cate was robbed!

Posted by: danielle at February 23, 2011 4:52 PM

This seems like the work of a short person.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at February 23, 2011 4:53 PM

Yes OldSchool60, worse than Bruce Cockburn. Worse than Neil Young with a head cold.

I liked "When Somebody Loved Me", I think it is lovely.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at February 23, 2011 4:53 PM

HALLE BERRY - I still foam at the mouth every time I think about it. I hate that talentless hack. HATE!!!! And for some reason, I seem to be the only person who seems to think that she is absolutely TERRIBLE. Everyone else blames the movie choices she's made. NO It's HER! She sucks. Just turn on any one of her movies and close your eyes and listen. If you don't die laughing at her "Acting" you may need to get your hearing checked.

Posted by: cmoody at February 23, 2011 4:54 PM

Listen, I'm not the best judge of pop music, obviously. Today I advocated Lady Gaga AND made a Music Man reference in this headline. But. I. Hate. Randy. Newman. Some hates are inexplicable. This one is totally explicable, by the way, but to do so is to insult idiosynchronic and his lady love. Such is not my intent or desire.

That being said. Hate. Hate. Hate.

He won for Monsters Inc.

Hate. (Him not Monsters Inc., it's a delight).

Optimus Rhyme someone beat you to that joke.

Hate.

Posted by: Joanna Robinson at February 23, 2011 4:56 PM

I understand he was a well-regarded musician. But once he started singing for movies, which is when he came to my attention, apart from "Short People" and "I Love L.A." (which just meant "novelty pop" to me)...

Yeah....hate.

Posted by: Jay at February 23, 2011 4:57 PM

Careful, thecreepingkid, Family Guy references are not well-received around here...

Posted by: badkittyuno at February 23, 2011 5:00 PM

"I hate that Marisa Tomei won over Mercedes Reuhl that year, but I don't hate her as an actress, or even in that role."

No she didn't. They both won, in 1991 and 1992.

Posted by: Will at February 23, 2011 5:12 PM

Randy Newman's film music is mediocre at best. Hi singing voice is an acquired taste. But I will always love him for 'God's Song' and 'Old Kentucky Home', if nothing else. Hollywood would never have let the man who composed those two anywhere near a soundtrack.

Posted by: PaulB at February 23, 2011 5:16 PM

Yeah, so, in 1993 Tomei beat out Joan Plowright, Vanessa Redgrave, Miranda Richardson and Judy Davis. That's pretty f*cking ridiculous/phenomenal. But I don't begrudge her, honestly, because a) I agree that she's retroactively earned that award b) My Cousin Vinny is a truly great movie and c) The Academy often uses the Supporting category to celebrate comedic performances...and I think that's kind of cool.

Posted by: coveredinbees at February 23, 2011 5:17 PM

Actually, Randy made some good records back in the 70's. So did Dr. John.
They both jumped the shark round about the same time, in round about the same way...

Posted by: dainzo at February 23, 2011 5:21 PM

i hate no one but i can't believe Sandra Bullock won last year( and i even wasn't for Streep team)

Posted by: carrie at February 23, 2011 5:23 PM

Halle Berry. That's all.

Posted by: Joker at February 23, 2011 5:30 PM

Thanks for Marisa Tomei pic, JR.

Posted by: John W at February 23, 2011 5:31 PM

suhweet! I thought I was the only one who hated him sooooo much. So nasally sounding and so smug and proud of himself I bet he brings people into the bathroom to show off his turds. Awesome call, Joanna.
But seriously, in your gallery you forgot Roberto Bernigni, who won for Life is Beautiful, the wrongest movie of all time.

Posted by: dagnabbit at February 23, 2011 5:53 PM

It will always be Diablo Cody for me.

Posted by: junierizzle at February 23, 2011 6:09 PM

Titanic trumps L.A. Confidential
Shakespeare in Love trumps Saving Private Ryan
Slumdog Millionaire trumps Milk
The Hurt Locker trumps Up in the Air

And you've got a bone to pick with Randy Newman? His songs are catchy, he deserved the award. Sorry. He deserves it this year too, but it's gonna go to A.R. Rahman and Dido because that's how the Academy is. Sometimes, they don't like awarding the best, but the most politically friendly/trendy.

(Still steamed about the first two. Fucking Hollywood.)

Posted by: DoctorControversy at February 23, 2011 6:23 PM

"When Somebody Loved Me" made me cry like a Boehner. I even get a little misty eyed during the opening credits of Major League. Randy Newman is amazing.

Forrest Gump beating Pulp Fiction annoys me the most, but the most head-scratching is Lee Marvin beating Laurence Olivier, Richard Burton, Oskar Werner and Rod Steiger for best actor in 65.

Posted by: The Mutt at February 23, 2011 6:33 PM

Whenever I hear Randy Newman, all I can think about is this MadTV sketch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmH4KfV_A-E (the first 1:05 in particular).

Posted by: MeMe at February 23, 2011 6:35 PM

didn't forrest gump beat " shawshank ...." also? forget " pulp
fiction ", that was the real tragedy.

Posted by: snake at February 23, 2011 7:16 PM

In defense of my wedding, and some slight understanding of some of The Eloquents' points - we chose the Robert Goulet version from Toy Story 2 Much better tempo, even though we both love Lyle Lovett.

Posted by: idiosynchronic at February 23, 2011 7:20 PM

Don't get the Randy Newman award hate. Of all the ignominious Oscar flubs, (Ordinary People over Raging Bull anyone?,) this seems kinda petty.

Posted by: James S at February 23, 2011 7:21 PM

Elizabeth was a terrible fucking movie. But Cate Blanchett was impeccable in it. Let's just not go overboard.

And Shakespeare in Love was a wonderful movie and all you haters can go suck it.

Posted by: figgy at February 23, 2011 7:22 PM

Yeah, Julia beating out Ellen Burstyn in 2000 still bugs the hell out of me. Hate.

Posted by: Neigh at February 23, 2011 7:24 PM

I won't even get into who deserved it, because we all know that Gwyneth won it because of the mighty Weinsteins. I still love her performance, though.

Posted by: figgy at February 23, 2011 7:24 PM

Out of those? HAS to be the equine.

Cate Blanchett, I'm sorry honey, you're a fine actress and I'm sure it must sting to lose to Gwyneth f***in Paltrow, but imagine how Ellen Burstyn felt.

I mean, seriously? Erin Brockovich over one of the greatest performances of the last who-knows-how-many years?

F**k this s**t.

Posted by: sacripanta at February 23, 2011 7:28 PM

Hmmm, I wonder why Burstyn's people (or the studio or I'm never quite SURE who decides this. . .the campaign manager?!?) didn't put her up for Supporting Actress that year. I'm not saying she WAS supporting or that she deserved anything less that Best Actress, but Requiem is just the kind of ensemble piece where they could get away with putting her into the Supporting Actress slot. She would have been a lock (no offense Marcia Gay Harden). Roberts also beat out the Lovely Laura Linney that year. In my favorite Lovely Laura Linney role. Criminal.

Posted by: coveredinbees at February 23, 2011 7:35 PM

At 5'2" my hated of randy newman is completely justified.

Posted by: jen at February 23, 2011 8:32 PM

I'm seriously torn about Horseface Notalent.

On the one hand, it was so pre-determined and "in the air", it was sickening.

Before the Oscar ceremony, before the nominations, before the film was completed, before Erin shook her boobs and those people were poisoned, the entertainment industry was going to Give Julia Her Oscar. For what, I don't know, but they did.

On the other hand, Julia "her" Oscar, and we don't have to wonder Will She Win One This Year?, ever again.

Same with Sandra Bullock. The answer will always be "no".

Posted by: Janis at February 23, 2011 8:50 PM

Yeah, so, in 1993 Tomei beat out Joan Plowright, Vanessa Redgrave, Miranda Richardson and Judy Davis. That's pretty f*cking ridiculous/phenomenal. ----
My Cousin Vinny was Tomei's first big break (outside of Stallone's flop Oscar). Many assume Tomei won because she was the only American amongst a bunch of Brits who split votes. Who knows in the end but I too am happy a comedic performance actually won an Academy Award.

Posted by: sosgemini at February 23, 2011 9:00 PM

Joanna, you are now gold to me. I mean, not that you weren't before, but now I know you're the kind of gold that I'd pay to knock back drinks with and snark on the world in general. I too have a deep loathing for Randy Newman and his lukewarm twangy numbers which I find bland at best and grating at worst. Listen, I know this isn't a popular opinion, it's just, he ain't my cup of tea, that's all.

Posted by: keenerweiner at February 23, 2011 9:12 PM

Wha? Some of you are still carrying a grudge for "Short People" after all these decades?

Get over it. You're worse than a 5'71/2" guy making sure he always includes the half inch.

Posted by: idiosynchronic at February 23, 2011 9:19 PM

Maybe I can understand not agreeing with Randy Newman's wins. But you can't hate him. Not after listening to his original music. He is a great piano player with a good voice and writes hilarious satire songs.

Posted by: Zeff at February 24, 2011 12:24 AM

Dances with Wolves over Goodfellas & Titanic over L.A. Confidential for Best Picture

The English Patient, Shakespeare in Love, & Chicago winning Best Picture

Julia, Reese, Halle, Goopy, Sandra, & Helen Hunt winning Best Actress

Holly Hunter over Angela Bassett for Best Actress

Posted by: Snrub at February 24, 2011 3:17 AM

Does this mean you're unable to make it all the way through a Pixar movie then JR?

What about that heartbreaking bit with Jessie in Toy Story 2 - "When She Loved Me". Surely you don't hate that?

Posted by: Simon at February 24, 2011 8:05 AM

Never mind all that..what about Tommy Lee Jones winning for The Fugitive over Ralph Fiennes for Schindler's List?!

Posted by: Dora at February 24, 2011 9:10 AM

I love Randy Newman's work in "The Princess and the Frog" [ducks].

I can't get that exorcised over Mafia 6 because I thought that was a legitimately good song. Yeah, they won over Parton and that's always a travesty, but it wasn't as bad as Cuba Gooding, Jr.'s or Paltrow's win. I am, however, a sucker for a justified upset, even if the winner's not the clear winner. For example, Cotillard's victory was an upset and was one that I loved.

Am I correct in thinking that nobody won anything for "Notes on a Scandal"? Because that movie, adaption, acting, everything was awesome.

Posted by: samantha t at February 24, 2011 11:24 AM

Mmmm Marisa Tomei...

Is it weird that although I hate Natalie Portman, I want her to win the Oscar this year? Mostly because I want her to be hit hard by the Oscar curse.

Posted by: denesteak at February 24, 2011 11:40 AM

I don't share the world's love for Toy Story 2 for the simple fact that it was loaded with insufferable Randy Newman songs sung by Randy Newman and, presumably, FOR Randy Newman. His tunes are ok, but his singing is equivalent to railroad spikes in my head.

Posted by: TylerDFC at February 24, 2011 11:58 AM

Point of order:

Have you listened to any of RN's actual music, beyond the insufferable, cloying paycheck songs he churns out for kids' movies? He's actually a very prolific and serious songwriter. Not exactly short on the snark, either. Check out "My Country", "Rednecks", "Political Science" or "Great Nations of Europe".

I'll also point out that he scored and wrote all the songs in "Three Amigos". So there's that.

Posted by: Martin at February 24, 2011 12:48 PM

Also, I hope the people referencing "Short People" realize that RN does not actually hate short people, and that the song is in fact a fairly acute satire of prejudice in general.

Posted by: Martin at February 24, 2011 12:50 PM

I will stand for NO hating on Three 6 Mafia's Oscar win. That was a damned fine song from a damned fine movie.

It IS hard out here for a pimp.

Posted by: Melody at February 24, 2011 1:44 PM

For you Newman haters, you might want to check out what his songs sound like when sung by actual singers. I suggest Bonnie Raitt. Man, does she make his songs sound good.

Posted by: jimbob at February 24, 2011 2:47 PM

Neigh, totally with you. Julia Roberts Oscar didn't piss me off NEARLY as much until I saw Requiem for a Dream a few years later. I think that was the moment I went from actually kind of liking Julia Roberts (a little,) to active dislike.

Posted by: GwenBear at February 24, 2011 2:50 PM

I am disappointed, I thought pajiba made a big deal a month or so ago about NOT calling women horse faced?

Posted by: Exeter Anon at February 24, 2011 8:21 PM

Three 6 Mafia earned that award for writing a rap that was actually used in the film, and was an important part of explaining our main characters "struggles." I love hip hop, except that stuff from the south, and I can't stand Three 6 Mafia, or the song, but unlike the other nominated song that year, it was performed by the cast on screen and used to move the plot. Not played over the credits or as a montage piece.

Posted by: Gamal at February 24, 2011 9:09 PM

Dora, I completely forgot that one. Ralph the Hotzi > TLJ.

Posted by: Snrub at February 25, 2011 12:58 AM

Who's the chick? Third picture?

Posted by: Mandy at February 25, 2011 1:39 AM

Fucking Nicholas Cage (Leaving Las Vegas) winning over Massimo Troisi (Il Postino - The Postman). Massimo died shortly after production on this film and even dead, he's been doing better work than Nick Cage.

Bitter? Yes, I am.
