Goddamn't what am I missing here?

Posted by: DeistBrawler at February 21, 2012 1:51 AM

Great sideboob action!

Posted by: Nicolae at February 21, 2012 1:51 AM

Farewell indeed. I loved season 1 so much and hated season 2 sooo much.

Posted by: Rob at February 21, 2012 1:54 AM

Though I do think we can all agree that S2 was not up to the magic of S1, I will still miss it. I actually found myself worrying for Mr Bates in the back of my mind last week, as if he were someone I knew.

Posted by: Neon at February 21, 2012 2:03 AM

I wasn't crazy about season two, but I have high hopes for season three.

Posted by: Jem at February 21, 2012 2:04 AM

I'm gonna have to rewatch both season before 3 comes out!

Posted by: Bodhi at February 21, 2012 2:06 AM

Yes season two wasn't quite as awesome but Maggie Smith people. Can you really find fault while Maggie Smith breathes air. AND BRANSON!

Posted by: e-money at February 21, 2012 2:08 AM

Whatever, I'm drooling over Thomas. Bates schmates, that dude is fat AND a murderer.

Posted by: AM at February 21, 2012 2:12 AM

BATES FOREVER.

Posted by: duckandcover at February 21, 2012 2:18 AM

So much love for this list. Hope S3 will recover some of the magic of S1.

And CARSON FOREVER!!!

Posted by: Jelinas at February 21, 2012 3:22 AM

Au revoir

There, I fixed that for you.

Posted by: Jerry at February 21, 2012 3:52 AM

Don't forget the HATS!
Even better, the fabulous jewelry.

Posted by: Lindsey with an 'e' at February 21, 2012 4:23 AM

I might have to get into Downton just for Shirley.

And, clearly, CLEARLY....the hats

Posted by: Nadine at February 21, 2012 5:05 AM

I haven't hopped the Downton Abbey train yet, but now... now I feel like I owe it to myself to.

Posted by: JAJenks at February 21, 2012 8:03 AM

Bates?? Really?? God I can't take his sanctimonious martydom. I'm sure he's innocent, but I wish they'd hang him anyway. I have no tolerance for men who think they are too noble to shit. Anna could do better.

Posted by: bibliophile at February 21, 2012 8:12 AM

31, if you count side-boob.

Posted by: Keith at February 21, 2012 8:18 AM

Everyone is complaining about Season 2, but I loved it. Look, it's a soap. A magically costumed, gorgeously shot soap, and Season 2 embraced that with more and more ludicrous plotlines and more and more sexual tension - which is why I come to Downton! None of it is well-written; but it's pretty as hell and has great cliffhangers.

It's not War and Peace, people. It's Days of Our Edwardian Lives. [And I love it for that].
Now fetch me another serving of repressed sexuality in pretty dresses, thank you, Carson.

Posted by: Tammy at February 21, 2012 8:22 AM

::SOME SPOILERS BELOW!!!::

There are parts of Season 2 I thought were really well done. And then there was the rest of it. However, none of it failed solidly enough for me to not continue my obsession.

I really, really DESPERATELY want Thomas to stop succeeding in anything, ever. I laughed and laughed when it turned out his black market product was all fake. Because FINALLY there was a little karmic compensation for the fact that he is an evil little twat. When Baby Killer O'Brien can feel better about herself when you talk, you have reached a new low.

Posted by: KatSings at February 21, 2012 8:23 AM

SPOILERS

1. I'm sorry, but Bates and Anna's love scenes squeaked me out. EWWWWWWWWWW! He's old and fat and milquetoast and has no backbone. Anna's only with him because she doesn't get out much, and William was smitten with Daisy and Thomas is a gay asshole (love to hate him).

2. Maggie Smith can do no wrong. She steals every scene she's in. I'm currently Netflixing stuff she did in her youth (well, her 30's and 40's). I've got a disk of a double feature of a monologue, and then a play with Tom Baker (pre Dr. Who) and Charles Gray (no neck M).

3. Cora's accent bothers me, but I know it's the actress' real accent, which bothers me even more.

4. They just don't know what to do with Edith.

5. In real life, Mary and Sybil would have been disowned and Edith would be the sought after sister (as long as she wasn't tainted by association).

6. With the speed they've been skipping years, aren't these girls like 30 now? They haven't aged a day, but their dresses have.

7. How does O'Brien get her hair to do that? Don't tell me. I really don't want to know.

8. Anyone else think that Lord Grantham is the secret father of the widowed maid's son. It was like they knew each other from "before" and were picking it back up. He kept doing nice things for the son.

Posted by: BWeaves at February 21, 2012 9:04 AM

You really should have mentioned the hats again. Oh, Sweet Fancy Moses, the hats!

We haven't been able to sit through the show for the past few weeks. It went from pretty soap opera to penny dreadful with shocking ease. What absolute twaddle.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at February 21, 2012 9:09 AM

I'm a bit sad, but thanks to Netflix streaming, I can visit whenever I want.

I was a bit swoony over Matthew and Mary at the end. Sure, fake snow and hackneyed phrases, but his eyes are just too blue to resist. And disheveled Thomas was a lovely sight.

Did anyone else's PBS have a little behind the scenes interview-y thing on Sunday night? Ours did, and I'm now even more swoony over Matthew. Guess I'll need to imdb him & watch some other stuff.

Posted by: Captain Tuttle at February 21, 2012 9:22 AM

SPOILERS

I was so pissed that they didn't hang Bates (although I knew it would never happen). Then Series 3 would be Mary and Anna in New York with the family visiting. It would have been glorious. Can you imagine Violet in the colonies?

Posted by: Three-nineteen at February 21, 2012 9:32 AM

I only recently started watching Downton, so I never saw the first season. I don't know what it is, since a lot of things were and still are mysteries to me. But I still liked it. It is totally soap-opera like, but much... classier (...dude, I HATE it when people refer to things as "classy" it sounds SO white trash, must find thesaurus) than watching Nicky and Victor or Luke and Laura.

And Maggie Smith is hilarious, who ever is writing her dialogue deserves a slap on the ass for a job well done. And the clothes and set... yeah, I'd watch it even if they made Lady Edith a pole dancer.

and of course... the hats.

Posted by: MRod at February 21, 2012 9:36 AM

I miss it already!

Posted by: ChickaBoom! at February 21, 2012 9:44 AM

Not my cuppa, but I get the sense that the true lust in the loins for Ms. J are the hats.

Posted by: Fredo at February 21, 2012 9:59 AM

BWeaves, I totally thought the same thing about the maid's son! My mom thought I was insane, but I'm sticking to it. Also, I'll take Branson over Bates and Matthew any day. Political and sexy. Yum.

Posted by: PerpetualIntern at February 21, 2012 10:12 AM

I'm with everyone who wants Bates and Anna to go away. Especially Bates. It's come to the point that I mute the TV when he has any lines. He's supposed to be noble and righteous and he just comes across as the most boring, annoying, self-aware martyr TV has ever seen (and I speak as someone who was raised by the Queen of Self-aware Martyrs) .
I really want Bates to hang. I have no doubt his wife killed herself if she had to listen to him moaning on for more than five minutes. There have been many Bates-centric scenes where I would have reached for the arsenic myself if I had any.

And as I mentioned yesterday:
I want Anna to find an age-appropriate fun man.
I want them to stop making the only gay character so evil that Jodeph Stalin looks like a teddy bear in comparison.
I shall also miss our Sunday night drinking game of taking a shot every time the Turkish diplomat was mentioned....although Monday mornings may seem a lot less fuzzy now

Posted by: PaddyDog at February 21, 2012 10:14 AM

Thomas will find redemption.

Bates will be exonerated.

M & M will live happily ever after.

I have spoken.

Posted by: Maryscott O'Connor at February 21, 2012 10:34 AM

Oh, oh, if anyone still has it handy, do yourself a favour: Go the episode (SPOILER) where Matthew starts to walk again and fast forward to the scene where they tell the family. Elizabeth McGovern/Cora Crawley's face is a symphony of exquisitely bad acting. She looks a 7 year old in in a school play who is pretending to be excited to get ice cream. Look for it, you won't be disappointed. I'd be willing to pay for a GIF of it.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at February 21, 2012 10:39 AM

I've missed a few episodes, so I'm a little behind on some of the drama.

It IS Days of Our Edwardian Lives. Except unlike in U.S. soaps, everybody doesn't look Botoxed and fake-titted, the wardrobe and sets are gorgeous and the English accents just give it somethin' somethin'. For some reason, sexual tension is sexier in an English accent.

Bates and his problems are kinda tiresome, but whatever. Gotta have some obstacles in a soap opera, otherwise they'd be boring as shit.

Posted by: Slash at February 21, 2012 11:16 AM

I believe The Guardian reviewer started the trend of referring to Bates as Eeyore. He deserves a journalism award for that one.

What sexual tension, Slash? Banana/Eeyore & Anna? Ick. Matthew and Mary? You know they'd be living in a tense silence after the first 6 weeks of marriage.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at February 21, 2012 12:10 PM

BINGO! Worst actressin' ever!

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at February 21, 2012 12:11 PM

Maria Doyle Kennedy looked damn good, but let's face it, crazy people are hot.

I'm pretty sure she wasn't crazy when she married Bates. I see it as a long process of trying hard to put up with his endless miserable demeanor; thinking she had some respite from him in a cozy Bates-free jail cell when she stole the regimental silver until he turned that around on her and took the blame himself; and then finally snapping one day and descending into full madness.

Posted by: PaddyDog at February 21, 2012 12:15 PM

But did you click on dorquemada's link? I've added it to my Favourites Bar.

I'm with PaddyDog on Eeyore.

Why would you marry Matthew when Sir Richard is standing RIGHT THERE? Okay, he's preoccupied with twirling his moustache, but he has the patience of a saint, and his cynical bastardism is on a par with Mary's bitchy missishness. How long has he been waiting to marry that woman? He must love her. I repeat, Mary needs to be "kissed" and often, and by someone who knows how to do it. Matthew will roll off her on their wedding night, Mary will console him with a "it doesn't matter, not really, it's fine" and they will spend the next 40 years hating each other.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at February 21, 2012 12:24 PM

Eh, I also don't get the lust/love for Bates. I mean, he put his loyalty to his boss's family ahead of the happiness of the woman he supposedly loves. I guess I have no sense of romance, but I don't get how that makes him a romantic hero. A good employee, sure, but NOT a good boyfriend.
But whatever, it leaves more Branson for me.

Posted by: mc at February 21, 2012 12:29 PM

mc

Don't you get it? This is Julian Fellowes' version of how life should be. Servants live for their masters. Why if Bates had put his personal life ahead of his employer's we would all start questioning his sexuality because only gay employees are disloyal. What really boggles me is why we didn't have a scene with the unctuous Carson offering to cut his penis off and give it to Matthew when his own was broken.
Please, future Lord Crawley, take my pecker, it's the least I can do for someone with superior breeding such as yourself

Posted by: PaddyDog at February 21, 2012 12:43 PM

Paddydog,
You may be right about Mrs. Bates, but I've seen too many people who are manipulative and hateful, and their long suffering spouses, to think otherwise. Our experiences drive our perceptions.
It may be my limited (read: American) knowledge of the time, but wasn't this type of behavior toward the aristocracy, and rigid class disctinction, a mark of this period? The horrible losses during the War was a catalyst of change, and I think the show does try to portray that. Bates' loyalty to Crawley stretches back at least 20 years, and it seemed logical to me that he'd fall on his own sword. Stiff upper lip and all that.

Posted by: dorquemada at February 21, 2012 1:03 PM

dorquemada
You are taking me far too seriously overall, but especially with regard to Mrs. Bates. I find Bates to be incredibly irritating so I created my own back story as to why the wife would be so evil because let's face it, if any sane woman were married to Bates, she would be happy to grant the divorce and be rid of him.

As to your second point, I think it depends on whether you watch DA as accurate historical fiction or a very entertaining but completely preposterous soap. I choose the latter.
I wouldn't miss an episode for the world, but nothing about it short of the costumes and the settings is very realistic. It's an incredibly benign view of the aristocracy and their relationship with their help. But we shouldn't let that weigh us down: we should just enjoy discussing our crushes, our pet hates, the hats and the lovely labradors.

Posted by: PaddyDog at February 21, 2012 1:25 PM

I can go with that. Party on!

Posted by: dorquemada at February 21, 2012 1:32 PM

By the way dorquemada with this I've seen too many people who are manipulative and hateful, and their long suffering spouses you have unfortunately described my oldest sister and the 20 years of manufactured drama she has inflicted on her husband and which he, inexplicably, continues to accept.

Posted by: PaddyDog at February 21, 2012 1:39 PM

Brother Julien is in the process of divorcing a sadness junkie. Perhaps Anna is one of those.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at February 21, 2012 1:45 PM

Season 1 was FAR SUPERIOR to Season 2.

The brilliance of S1 lay in the seperation of class, the interactions between class and the hierachy within each class itself.

The war ruined everything.

The series should have started a few years (or with the way they skip thru time, 5-10yrs) before the war to allow for the play out of the different class structure... it all moved too quickly and is now merged into one, less interesting, dynamic.

Posted by: layla at February 21, 2012 2:36 PM

Season 2 was certainly mediocre compared to the first, but dammit, Mary and Matthew twirling in the snow at the end gave me all sorts of warm fuzzies. That scene alone made me forgive the show for jumping the tracks for most of this season. Yes, I'm an idiot romantic at heart. Sue me. I love that they're together and happy and engaged.

What confused me more than anything about the last episode is how in the hell the prosecutor seemed to know about every single one of their private conversations at Downton. Was he hiding in the closets? How could he have known about Hughes eavesdropping on Bates and Vera? I don't get it.

Posted by: beckster at February 21, 2012 3:22 PM

Completely agree with the Eeyore assessment. I don't care. I'm still in love. There's a lot to be said for a man who puts others first.

Someone said that the sex scene between Bates and Anna was gross because he's old and fat and milquetoast. Jeebus Chrissy, I'm glad there are no cameras in my bedroom. Me and my honey qualify on the first two counts, although there's nothing wimpy about either one of us. Heavy naked white men sans washboard abs, and women with crooked teeth and unplumped lips, are probably the most realistic thing about this series.

There's an interview with Julian Fellowes somewhere in which he says that he could have written Mary with Carlyle and Mathew with Lavinia, and both pairings would have been fine. He thought Mary and Carlyle, both image-conscious and ruthless about their own needs and wants, could have built something together; and Mathew would have been happier with Lavinia in the long run simply because Lavinia would have lived solely for him and for his needs and Mathew would have been fine with that. Lavinia was okay, but I think I would have preferred Mary to stay with Carlyle, just for the fantastic drama that would have created. I realize Iain Glen has to get back to being Sir Jorah Mormont on Game of Thrones, but I hope they bring him back for an episode or two in S3.

Posted by: PDamian at February 21, 2012 3:34 PM

beckster.
Me too. It was as if there were hidden microphones in the whole house, even in Grantham's dressing room. I can only think that Isis has been selling secrets on the sly. It was so ridiculous, and let's not even talk about the fact that Bates' own lawyer seemed not to bother defending him at all.

Posted by: PaddyDog at February 21, 2012 3:47 PM

When you're alone and life is making you lonely
You can always go - Downton
When you've got worries, all the noise and the hurry
Seems to help, I know - Downton

Someone really needs to do a version of the Petula Clark song... I've only seen the second season... dangit. Someone has surely already thought of this, right?

Posted by: MRod at February 21, 2012 3:47 PM

@PaddyDog
Of course this is Lord Fellowes' rosy-hued view of the wonders of aristocratic rule, lordly benevolence, etc., etc.
What I find kind of hilarious are the VIEWERS who see Bates' behavior as crushworthy. "Oh, your guy thinks the reputation of his boss's family is more important than you?" *swoon*
I guess it's the Edwardian equivalent of bros before hos.
Re. Carson's pecker: Ha! I wish that scene had been in there. Doesn't Carson have some sort of heart condition, though? He might be worried that it wouldn't live up to expectations. What he SHOULD have done was make that a condition of Thomas's rehire -- you know, to prove his loyalty to the Crawley family honor and all. And then, when Bates inevitably martyrs himself again, Thomas won't have to resort to dog-napping.
I actually don't hate Bates, I just find him kind of tedious. And the show is such soapy fun that I am going to miss it.

Posted by: mc at February 21, 2012 3:51 PM

Posted by: MRod at February 21, 2012 3:56 PM

PDamian:

I don't mind real couples who look like Eeyore and Anna. I object to the only quasi nude scene in the show as being between these two and not some of the hotter couples. If I'm forced to WATCH, then I don't want to see him nekkid.

Personally, I think Mary should have married Carlyle and then Mary could have an affair with Matthew. Much more scandal to be had that way.

Posted by: BWeaves at February 21, 2012 4:43 PM

Your Welcome Internet.

Posted by: lele at February 21, 2012 10:07 PM

Love this show.

I know people hate on season 2, but I have to say one thing. It could have easily become a war show for much longer than it did. I respect that it didn't. I mean think about it, war=drama on a silver platter. They could have ridden that wave of tears for much longer and they didn't, which I respect because the show is called " downton abbey" after all.

About the Anna bates lovin, I found it refreshing. There was no panting or humping,It was nice to see anyone but washboard abs and fake tits all the time.

Posted by: Dinka at February 21, 2012 11:59 PM

Ugh. Mr. Bates is a jowly, miserable martyr of a man. He's basically Eeyore at this point.

Posted by: ricci at February 22, 2012 12:46 AM

Maggie Smith and Shirley MacLaine? He who interrupts will suffer dreadfully!!

Posted by: MerriAnn at April 3, 2012 6:47 PM

Expected plot-lines S3

One Fenian Grandchild (of Sybil and the Chauffeur)
The Wedding of Matthew (heir to the title) and Lady Mary
Meeting the American Mother In Law
Bates Exoneration
Meeting the new Kitchen and Laides Maids

Posted by: Robert, Earl of Grantham at April 3, 2012 7:02 PM

I've looked through the comments and haven't seen this anywhere...but I really think that Sir Richard killed the awful Mrs. Bates. He was in London the same time that Bates was...and he has a motive...Mrs. Bates could have tried to get more money out of him by trying to revive the dead Turk story..but I do confess to a Bates crush..as noble and pudgy seems to work for me...
