Remember, the Best Picture grew to 10 nominations. So squeeze Inception on there (even if you don't agree) or you'll get Fanboy/girl Rage.

  • ...so is one of the predictions that the Academy will go back to five Best Picture nominees this year?

(Totally forgot about that. Noted and corrected -- DR)

Posted by: mightygodking at November 11, 2010 3:11 PM

Yeah, and also put Wall Street 2: Ca$h in Mah Back Pocket on there.

I see the "Academy" has blown it once again.

    Typical!

I hate to be that guy, but... aren't there 10 nominees for Best Picture, now?

I only noticed because Inception didn't make your cut, and I'm pretty positive that since the 10 nominee rule was put in place because of Christopher Nolan -- well, because of The Dark Knight -- I'm pretty certain it will have to be nominated. Even if it's only to justify the amount of nominees.

Or, I'm wrong and they've changed it back. In which case, spot on, sir.

Posted by: RobP at November 11, 2010 3:13 PM

Well, hell. I would like to STET my previous comment, except the "spot on, sir" part.

Posted by: RobP at November 11, 2010 3:15 PM

...and even after going to ten nominations The Social Network doesn't get a Best Picture nomination?

SHOW US ON THE DOLL WHERE JESSE EISENBERG TOUCHED YOU, ROWLES

What about that one movie where Johnny Knoxville takes a dump in Katherine Heigl's mouth?

Posted by: Paultera at November 11, 2010 3:28 PM

You really don't think The Social Network will get a nod? It was incredibly well reviewed across the board and made a ton of money.

Posted by: Martin at November 11, 2010 3:37 PM

I've only seen Inception so far, but I'm sure I'll catch most of them before I die in 70 years.

Posted by: Kballs at November 11, 2010 3:49 PM

The amount of indie films nominated in this in hilariously optimistic. I'm glad you enjoyed Get Low but Get Serious. I guarantee best picture nods for both The Social Network and Toy Story 3.

Posted by: valerie at November 11, 2010 3:57 PM

I don't think the Fighter will get a nod it premiered at AFI with so-so reviews. I agree with the Social Network. The surprise pic will be the Town .Best picture and director and possible best supporting actor.

Posted by: Jasmin at November 11, 2010 4:00 PM

Ha I would LOVE if the nominations actually came out looking like this. This should be titled "2010 Academy Award Nominations if Pajiba readers replaced the Academy."

I would throw in The Social Network to Best Picture, Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine) and Michael Douglas (Solitary Man) for Best Actor.

Posted by: THRILLHO at November 11, 2010 4:08 PM

thank you for not putting justin timberlake anywhere near that list

Posted by: Jolene at November 11, 2010 4:21 PM

John Hawkes HAS to get a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Winter's Bone. HAS TO.

Posted by: jM at November 11, 2010 4:30 PM

There is no way Another Year would only be nominated for Manville. It's a smart, well-done Mike Leigh film; it's going to be nominated for Original Screenplay and might sneak in for Best Picture. Leigh's not out of the question for Director, either; he's always a threat there.

I'll also toss out that the Animal Kingdom team was one of the first to send out Academy screeners with FYCs for Jacki Weaver in Supporting Actress.

As wonderful as it would be to see Jennifer Lawrence get in for Winter's Bone, I think both Nicole Kidman for Rabbit Hole and Sally Hawkins for Made in Dagenham are more likely nominees at this point.

Posted by: Robert at November 11, 2010 4:46 PM

I've only seen Inception and it looks like that's all I want to see. I guess I'll be skipping another Academy Awards show.

Posted by: candy at November 11, 2010 4:47 PM

    That's it. I'm bored.

Posted by: klingonfree at November 11, 2010 4:56 PM

Brotha, Bull Murray is a lock!

Posted by: ChetLemon at November 11, 2010 5:09 PM

Winters Bone for best adapted screenplay. I'd like to see it get a nom for Best Pic, too. Even if it IS a throw away. And you forgot John Hawkes as Best Supporting actor in Winters Bone.

Interesting list full of movies I haven't seen (other than Inception and...NO), or heard of in some cases.

Posted by: TylerDFC at November 11, 2010 5:56 PM

Dustin, I know you keep trying to sell "The Kids Are All Right" as this great film, but it was REALLY average, got mixed reviews, and in no way will get a best picture nod, even with the expanded list of nominees. Frankly, I'd be surprised to see it get a nomination of any sort.

Posted by: jimbob at November 11, 2010 6:13 PM

first of all: toy story 3 needs to be in best picture and best screenplay
    second: we NEED razzie predictions

Posted by: jajajaj at November 11, 2010 6:54 PM

Surprisingly optimistic, though I'm more than a little dubious at the idea that The Social Network won't get a nomination. Honestly, I expect The Fighter to slip past everyone's radar.

Posted by: ChristianH at November 11, 2010 8:59 PM

*won't get a nomination for Best Picture

Posted by: ChristianH at November 11, 2010 9:01 PM

Toy Story 3 wins in all categories.

    /in my dreams.

Posted by: Brittany at November 12, 2010 12:15 AM

Really? No Matt Damon OR Josh Brolin Best Supporting nods?

Hmm. Gonna hafta disagree with your call, there. I think Tru Grit 2010 is going to clean up in every category, at least where the nominations are concerned. Obviously, haven't seen the finished product, so I could be dead wrong. But from the looks of the PREVIEWS, that thing is killer. SO to speak. Hell, even the little girl could get a nom. Definitely cinematography, since we all know how good their pics always look...

This might be one of those twice-in-a-row times, vis a vis Bridges. And given how fucking FUNNY Damon's clip is, I think he might just get it this time. Then again, I haven't been able to see The Town, so I can't judge Renner yet. Still, we all know how political those stupid awards are and always have been -- it might go to Damon just because "it's his turn." which would suck if it's clearly a superior role and performance from Renner. That would make twice in a row Renner got hosed. Because, let's face it, his was clearly a superior role and performance last year, too. Bridges was given the statue for a lifetime of achievements; Bad Blake was a role he could have phone in in his sleep and practically did. He should have won it for The Fisher King or Fearless. He should have won Best Supporting for The Contender. Or any of half a dozen others.

Fuck it. It's all such shit. I've never gotten over Dustin Hoffman being hosed for Tootsie or Paul Newman being hosed for The Verdict or Denzel being hosed for Malcolm X -- and instead, them all winning for clearly inferior performances, and in turn, hosing OTHER, clearly superior performances the years they DID win. It's such fucking bullshit.

So why do I keep watching and buying into it? I'm such a schmuck

Posted by: Maryscott O'Connor at November 12, 2010 2:12 AM

Agree with Ms O Connor, True Grit will clean up. PS What you figure for best foreign picture? I mean there are soo many films not made in Hollywood that were great this year.

Posted by: JaneSpotting at November 12, 2010 10:53 AM

'Mesrine' was my favorite, but the rules for foreign film are so goofy I'm not sure it'll even be submitted. 'Carlos' is reportedly great, but made-for-TV. 'Broken Embraces' could win, but was actually made last year, so it may not even qualify. A crapshoot.

Posted by: periscope at November 13, 2010 11:00 AM

What about Jackie Chan for supporting role in Karate Kid. Heart-warming touching performance.

Posted by: Christina Lewis at November 14, 2010 12:01 AM

social network is far too good to be overlooked but the most
egregious oversight is who is missing from winter's bone ( which
also deserves to be on the best picture roll) and that is the
best supporting actor ....JOHN HAWKES! he was off-the-chart great......." is this gonna be our time ?" ..... b-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r.

Posted by: snake at November 15, 2010 1:50 AM

Even though this is only a prediction, just looking at this list quickly reminds me why I hate the Academy Awards.

    Posted by: Littlejon2001 at November 15, 2010 4:38 PM

How in the world you forgot Leo in Shutter Island for Best Actor category???

Oscars completely ignored "The Dark Knight" that year and it was really sad. Nolan should have won but this is his year. No matter what. Inception, best movie I have seen in years. By far the best! If by any means Oscars ignores Inception this year, then it would be the worst/pathetic/sad/lame moment in the history. But if they go with a movie just like they did last year with hurt locker then maan they are gonna suck so badly.

    Best Picture: Inception
    Best Director: Nolan (Period)
    Best Original Screenplay:Inception
Best original score: Hans Zimmer for Inception
    Best editing: Inception
    Best Cinematography: Inception
Best Actor: Leonardo DiCaprio for Shutter Island

Rest of the categories: Frankly, I dont care. You can give it to anybody.

true grit shouldnt even be nominated and i hope all of hollywood remembers who the cohens are trying to one up-the biggest star of all time-the duke. you dont try to show up a legend and i hope to god jeff bridges doesnt win. and 10 nominations? still- that is just ridiculous. hollywood is starting to jump the shark or it did a long time ago.

Posted by: linda at January 7, 2011 5:26 PM

The Town should be nominated for best picture, and Jon Hamm should be nominated for best supporting actor. The Town was incredible, it had a great twist and the acting was awesome. Ben Affleck killed that role and should make more movies like this one. Ben Affleck should also be nominated for best director, because the direction of this movie was maginficent. Another movie that should be nominated for best picture is The Social Network. What a great movie that was, and a great way to show how one of best inventions was brought to life. That movie had spectacular acting and the the script was well written. The Fighter and In ception are both nominated, as they both should be. Both of those movies are fantastic, and of course Christopher Nolan does it again. Those two movies were great pictures and they are both something I could watch all day long. If one these movies doesn't win, I will be very upset at the Academy.

I would say Paprika Steen(Applause) should be on the list of the best actress. Her performance was the best that I had seen in 2010
