Some of the very best film boyfriends of 1990s cinema are still winning hearts. Cher’s brother/boyfriend from Clueless? He’s doing well for himself. That young kid who captured the fair Bianca in 10 Things I Hate About You? Oh he’s splendid. Thanks for asking. As is Leliana’s douchey love from Reality Bites. But these guys? Not so much. Ladies, ladies, ladies and gay dudes. You have to nurture your 90s boyfriend. You must tend to him. Or else, much like a Tamagotchi, your 90s movie boyfriend will wither and fade. For SHAME. I thought you cared. Here are the ten most neglected and forgotten film crushes of the 90s* that have faded into relative obscurity. We’re all to blame.

Dougray Scott

Ben Chaplin

Tom Everett Scott

John Hannah

Ethan Embry

Mathieu Kassovitz

Josh Lucas

Michael Vartan

Jeremy Northam

DB Sweeney

*Two of these film boyfriends** are technically from the very early aughts. Hold that against me and I will judge you most righteously.

**They’re all so, so white. F*ck you, ’90s rom-com diversity.

Comments Are Welcome, Bigots and Trolls Are Not

  • Sara Habein

Oh John Hanna, yes sorry, I did not nurture you...

  • Strand

Ah Dougray Scott. Mission Impossible 2 ran late, so he couldn't do X-Men, which lead to then unknown Hugh Jackman getting the Wolverine role. Poor guy's still probably cursing John Woo at the way it all turned out.

  • Bedewcrock

Get out of my head! This is the best list! I replayed that Amelie scene WAY too many times. Way too many times.

  • Donna SHerman

I have never, never, never forgotten John Hannah.

  • MICHAEL VARTAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <3 He met his wife in the parking lot of Whole Foods. She's not a celebrity. When I heard that, I was down on myself for always looking homeless when I go there to buy my $9 macaroni.

  • Bedewcrock

He also speaks French fluently. Kill me now.

  • So THAT's what he was shopping for when my best friend saw him at Bristol Farms 7-8 years ago (we more often saw him at a nearby Starbucks).

  • narfna

Dougray Scott was in an episode of Doctor Who last season and I didn't recognize him AT ALL. When I found out it was him, I felt real bad but then I got over it.

  • You do know that Tom Everett Scott had a recurring role on Southland, right? He's been working steadily. He just never made it to heartthrob status.

  • Emm82

John Hannah's still not doing badly for himself, he's just not the heartthrob of the moment any more. He is still the only man to make me cry at a film (apart from Dumbo) for his funeral scene in 4 weddings. I hate that film, but he gets me every time.

  • ZbornakSyndrome

He was brilliant in that movie. He also had a decent little detective show that I had to order on DVD because American Television doesn't love me enough to broadcast it.

  • Emm82

    Was that rebus?

  • ZbornakSyndrome

YES. And I love him in it.

  • grr arrgh

Have you seen A Touch of Cloth (not to be confused with A Touch of Frost)? It's a parody of British crime dramas he's in and from what my mom (who has watched nearly EVERY British crime drama) has said it's pretty dead on.

  • bcarter3

The first one, from 2012, was flat-out brilliant--it was like a much raunchier version of the old "Airplane" movies. The one this year was a mess. They upped the crudeness, but left out the jokes.

  • Sara_Tonin00

Jeremy Northam, yum. But he's still out there.

And DB Sweeney was pretty much only attractive in Cutting Edge. Otherwise I could take or leave him.

  • kimberleybear

I'm sorry, but my crush on Jeremy Northam is alive and well, madam. Especially in period films, because that man fills out a proper suit like nobody's business.

  • ZbornakSyndrome

  • ZbornakSyndrome

Until you wrote this, I had forgotten what a pathetic anglophile I was in the 90s. Northam, Scott, Hannah and Chaplin were huge crushes for me that I maintained while everyone else was losing it over DiCaprio.
I would still walk on hot coals to meet John Hannah.
Also: The Cutting Edge, like the Golden Girls, is something I use to gauge people. If someone I meet doesn't like those things, I just don't understand them on a fundamental level.

  • Samantha Klein

I will never forget Nino. NEVER. Even if I have to squint to recognize him in the stuff he shows up in these days, like Munich and Haywire.

Highly approve this list. Basically, Vartan and Sweeney are the only two I have never actively lusted after.

  • Bob Genghis Khan

Yeah, pluck Never Been Kissed out of the 90's and into today's time and Vartan's character wil definitely lose his job and be investigated by the fuzz.

  • bastich

    What, no Brandon Lee?

  • Well, it's a little hard for him to get more work. I don't think anyone has forgotten him. Or maybe they have. I won't.

  • AvaLehra

How did THIS not happen? Mylanta! Mathieu Kassovitz is beautiful. I don't get it...

  • Siege

I have NEVER forgotten Ethan Embry. MARK RULES!

  • Guest

Though he's arguably not obscure (per the recent/current work on his IMDb), I must STRENUOUSLY protest the exclusion of Christian Slater, aka The Once Future Mr. Lemondrop. Even if Heathers and Gleaming the Cube were late 80's...

He was Hard (Harry) yet shy in Pump Up the Volume.
He was pouty and daddy-addled in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
He was CLARENCE FUCKING WORLEY in True Romance
He was CHRISTIAN FUCKING SLATER in all of it.

    Whatever. WHAT EV ER.

  • DataAngel

Some of us struggled through "Hemlock Grove" because of Dougray Scott. Thank you.

  • MGMcD

    Untamed Heart. 1993. I weep.

  • Jamie Dello Stritto

  • Green Lantern

    True Romance = Awesomesauce.

  • Siege

So many up-votes. So, so many. I even enjoy Kuffs.

  • Ben

Where the fuck is Ryan Phillipe

  • emmalita

I don't think he can be considered forgotten. Certainly not as high profile, but he has worked steadily and still shows up in the tabloids.

  • Siege

Also, he has not aged since then. I'm pretty sure he is a robot.

  • ZbornakSyndrome

If you've ever seen him act, you can pretty much tell he's a robot.
    ...couldn't resist.

  • Siege

I'm glad someone finally made that joke -- I was afraid I was going to have to come back and do it myself.

  • Berry

Also, he's icky. Almost as icky as Chad Michael Murray, he of the squint.

  • emmalita

I was going to say something about the blood of virgins, but then I realized that was going to get inappropriate very quickly.

  • Michelle

Man, now I want to watch That Thing You Do! I love that movie so hard.

  • I saw Tom Everett Scott in a restaurant a few weeks ago. He looked exactly like Tom Everett Scott. Onscreen, I've most recently seen him in Southland, although he was only in that regularly for the first and second seasons.

  • laylaness

    He's back on Southland!!!

  • Did they un-cancel it?

  • laylaness

It was bought from NBC by, somewhat embarrassingly, TNT. But it's really good still.

  • TNT didn't renew it this past spring, though. (Sorry if this turns out to be a duplicate--my earlier reply doesn't seem to be showing up.)

  • laylaness

Aw, maaaaaan, I hadn't heard that. He was just getting to be friends with Lydia again, too.

  • I know, I watched it all the way through. TNT decided not to renew this past spring, and Scott only appeared in--I think--one or two episodes after the first couple of seasons.

  • Green Lantern

    Me too, Michelle. Me too.

    Long live the Oh-NEE-ders!

  • Allijo

Please. We all know that movie was really about Captain Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters.

  • Laura Darch

DB Sweeny ftw - The Cutting Edge, one of my favorite (American) Films.
But, if you were also including early 90s fare, I would include Sean Patrick Flannery. He was mega adorbs in "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles", but was also in a Rom Com in the mid-late 90s ("Simply Irresistible(?))

  • rio

Why the heck is "The truth about cats and dogs" not on netflix? Cause I need that movie like I need air! I need it, as a ugly as shit insecure girl with a super hot cousin/sister (not in Beverly Hills 90210 incest, more like in a "we grew up so close we are basically sisters" kinda way) I can only mildly relate (since you know, Janeane Garofalo is a damn hottie and I have the voice of a chipmunk) but damn if I don't love that movie.

  • mairimba

By Ben Chaplin you meant Janeane Garofalo, right?

And Ethan Embry stars in my dreams at least twice a month. He has not been forgotten!

  • Fabius_Maximus

    Oh Janeane...

  • thewatcher

7 out 10 ain't bad. jeremy northam 4 eva! although he was still creepy-hot in the net, i still love him.

  • ZbornakSyndrome

The Net! OMG he was beautiful in that movie. I would have totally given him the disk with the internet on it, or whatever the hell the McGuffin was in that movie.

  • stella

To be fair, Josh Lucas is basically Matthew Mcconaughey.

  • thewatcher

minus the pot head, bongo playing, douchiness...yeah, i agree.

  • sanity fair

"minus the pot head, bongo playing, charm...yeah,
    i agree."

There, I fixed that for you. :-)

  • whateverkate

    And sadly, the career.

  • thewatcher

    yeah, i have to agree.

  • Melina

He just made that movie Big Sur with Kate Bosworth...where they both met their significant others (and now Josh Lucas has a baby! So cute!). I'm hoping it's good for both their sakes!

  • pnnylne
  • Berry

John Hannah! I have nothing more to say. Just... John Hannah!

  • Jamie Dello Stritto

    Alias. =(

  • Berry

I can't remember him from Alias at all, and apparently he was in two whole episodes. Were those during the later seasons? I almost stopped watching the show at some point.

  • emilya

Nope- they were from the beginning of season 1 when syd goes on her first double mission to the asylum in serbia. Hannah played a killer who would get activated by reciting a specific line of Donne's most famous poem.

  • Berry

Still not ringing any bells at all. ETA Was it the one with the mandrake root?

  • emilya

not that i remember, it is a 2 parter. it's the one where SPOILER ALERT she finds out he killed danny for sd6. Hannah recognizes her from a picture in the apartment, papa bear bristow admits that he was trying to get danny out of the country to save his life.

  • I appreciate your Alias nerdiness. I love that show, HARD.

  • emilya

it is one of my favorite shows. i received for xmas the whole series in the magnetic gold Irina box that drops open when you take the lid off- i babysit for the best parents ever!

  • Fabius_Maximus

He very gleefully hosted a recent episode of Never Mind The Buzzcocks.

  • emmalita

He was marvelous and even more delicous. I had to go watch the opening again upon seeing your comment. http://youtu.be/JneU9jNg6uQ

  • ZbornakSyndrome

Thank you for this. It made my morning.

  • emmalita

    Woo! Another convert.

  • Kala

Where, oh, where is he?! HBO has been playing Sliding Doors as of late, and I still swoon over his charm all these years later.

  • pisswizard

uh, is no one watching A Touch Of Cloth? for the love of god people, watch it immediately! it's like bathing in puns!!

  • Emm82

I watched a touch of cloth a couple of weeks ago. Just glorious in its use of terrible jokes!

  • DarcyMcCarbomb

He had a long run with "Spartacus" on Starz, a show which became a pretty big deal.

  • apsutter

He was so damned great in Spartacus!!! He and Lucy were my favorite characters and the best villains.

  • sanity fair

He was on the season 1 and 1.5 of Spartacus. I still found him strangely attractive, although his character was an asshole and not nearly as charming as the character in Sliding Doors.

  • Berry

He had a bit part in HBO's Carnivale, but that's the last time I remember seeing him in anything new. However, IMDb informs me that he actually gets pretty steady work, just not in things I watch.

Ooh, and I was obsessed with Sliding Doors for a while way back in high-school. Just obsessed.

  • Everybody involved, however tangentially, with 'Ever After' deserves to fade into obscurity. That way, hopefully, their crimes can be forgotten.

  • grr arrgh

I bet you even hate the scene where Danielle picks up the prince after the leader gypsy says she could take anything she could carry, don't you?

  • They couldn't have telegraphed that scene any more if the script had been written by Samuel Morse.

  • Sara_Tonin00

    but but...Angelica Huston!

  • sanity fair

I must down-vote you for the wrongness of your entire statement.

  • You can down-vote all you like...but in the end, I'll still be right. ;)

  • sanity fair

Now I must upvote you for taking the down-vote so well. Well played.

  • bastich

Now I have to downvote you because you upvoted Quartermain's reaction to being downvoted which happened because he didn't "upvote" the movie in his comment and wait what was I doing?

  • Berry

And I must upvote you for the rightness of yours.

  • sanity fair

You made me smile! Thank you!

  • ironjohn

super10funbonus points for including Mathieu Kassovitz

  • grr arrgh

Mmm 90s Dougray Scott. Damn, he had fine hair. My love for Ever After will never die. Never.

  • MGMcD

    one word: codpiece

  • oilybohunk7

I own it on DVD and yet if it is on TV I must watch it.

  • grr arrgh

All the movies I like are those kind of movies, though I think I broke Interview with the Vampire because once I finally bought the dvd it stopped coming on tv so frequently. Oops.

  • io

    mmmmm Josh Lucas

  • Naye

He looks exactly the same thank goodness. I thought he had a tv show at some point his year?
