Wash's death was so emotionally affecting (spoiler?) in Serenity that I honestly forget that Alan Tudyk is actually alive. That scene hit me as if a living, nonfictional person actually died on that day. So whenever I see pictures in him outside of the Firefly universe, I do a little "that's right! He's alive!" clap.

  • TWoPFan

    Pretty Little LIars.

  • Revenge: Amber Valetta was in Dead Silence with Ryan Kwanten, Ryan is on True Blood with Carrie Preston.

  • Bert_McGurt

Oooh, I got another one, though it's kind of easy. Sons of Anarchy stars Katey Sagal, who was Christina Applegate's mom on Married...With Children, who stars in Up All Night with Will Arnett.

  • Aaron Schulz

You can do this with most shows, i hope jason bateman is found at as a serial child predator, then maybe people wont talk about this show

  • Kip Hackman

Easily one of the best Pajiba posts ever.

  • causaubon

so, i just spent 30min writing a very long post about the connection that AD has to Homicide: Life on the Street (which didn't make this list even though it was a kick-ass show) and how that all works in to the St. Elsewhere "everything happened in the mind of an autistic boy named Tommy Westphall" theory. for some reason it didn't post. is this because it was too long? i used too much html? i included a link?

for the uber-nerds out there, google "Tommy Westphall".

Richard Belzer reprised his Homicide Det. John Munch role on AD, which means that AD is part of that universe and therefore is part of Tommy's fantasy.

  • That would mean The X-Files is part of the fantasy too, since Munch was on an episode of either The X-Files or The Lone Gunmen spinoff, can't remember which.

  • causaubon

if you google images for "Tommy Westphall", one of the first hits will be a flow chart that shows something in the neighbourhood of 250 shows (pretty much all of television from the late 70's to the early 90's) that are somehow connected to St. Elsewhere. the chart doesn't explain the connections (ie: AD connects to SE via Homicide and Munch) but that for me was part of the fun, was looking the connections up and, therefore, reliving a large part of my childhood.

some of the connections are long (more than three steps between a show and SE) and some are pretty tenuous (Red Dwarf connects to both Doctor Who and Star Trek because in one episode, the Red Dwarf flies past a spaceship graveyard and there is a T.A.R.D.I.S. there and a Klingon Bird of Prey). but like i said. it was fun going through it and researching some of the connections.

the chart i believe pre-dates AD so i'm sure there are now many more shows that could be added to it.

  • ntp

30 rock- Will Arnett has played Jack's archenemy Devon Banks in several episodes.

  • Blake

  • There are a few ways to get to Spaced, the quickest is Ed Begley in What's Your Number? with Martin Freeman, Martin Freeman in Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead with, oh, everyone from Spaced.

  • dizzylucy

I see Stan Sitwell is wearing his dress eyebrows.

Holy moly, I had no idea Wash was Pastor Veal!!!!
That first photo makes me insanely happy. Franklin HAS to be in the new episodes, right? RIGHT?

  • Groundloop

Whose favourite show is Saturday Night Live?

Also, I miss Archer. I'm going to grill me a cheese.

  • John W

I forgot what a handsome woman Maggie Smith was.

  • Me

The Ellen Show and Better Off Ted (through Portia Di Rossi), Scrubs (Zack Braff), United States of Jackie (Diablo Cody - Young Adult - Charlize Theron), the Newsroom (Greg Mottola - Superbad - Michael Cera), Up All Night (Will Arnett), Curb Your Enthusiasm (Jeff Garlin), Larry Sanders Show and Entourage (Jeffery Tambor), Party Down (Jane Lynch), Psych (Carl Weathers)...John Michael Higgins opens a huge door - he was in AD, but also in Wilfred, Seinfeld, Joey (not for Joey, but the connection to Friends), Frasier, which leads to Cheers. I see somebody's got the Buffy/Angel connection but still looking for ones for How I Met Your Mother, the West Wing, and Raising Hope, amongst others.

  • Three-nineteen

The Good Wife is a nexus here, since Carrie Preston has guested on it multiple times. Through it you can get to Sports Night (Josh Charles), The West Wing (Matthew Perry has guested on both), and Raising Hope (Martha Plimpton).
HIMYM is easy to get to through BtVS since Alyson Hannigan stars and Alexis Denisof has guested there.

  • Cordy47

Raising hope has Kate Micucci who played the Gooch on Scrubs, & then Zach Braff was in AD.

Ed begley Jr. was in at least one episode of The West Wing. Plus he's been on Curb with Jeff Garlin I believe

  • Cordy47

For HIMYM, Jason Segel was in 40 yr old Virgin with Seth Rogen, who was in Superbad with Michael Cera

  • Bert_McGurt

Segel was also on Paul Feig's Freaks & Geeks. And in The Muppets with Amy Adams, who guested on The Office, which has both Phyllis and Kevin who were on AD.

  • Arran

Knocked Up. Segel wasn't in 40YOV.

  • Cordy47

Thanks. I knew the Apatow connection would be easy and I was definitely thinking of Knocked Up

  • Bert_McGurt

Obligatory comment about Zach Braff guest starring as Phillip Litt, of "Girls With Low Self-Esteem" fame.

  • llp

    Battlestar Galactica?

  • Katee Sackhoff was in White Noise 2 with Nathan Fillion, Nathan with Alan Tudyk in Firefly. Alan in Arrested.

  • BendinIntheWind

Mary McDonnell (President Roslin) is on "The Closer" with Kyra Sedgewick who's married to Kevin Bacon.

...I think I may have misread the rules here.

  • beoms

I can think of one off the top of my head. Alessandra Torresani, who played Zoe Graystone in the BSG spinoff, Caprica, was the original girl who played Ann Veal.

  • Yep, yep, those are my favorites. It's lists like these that make me question whether I really like the shows that I do or if you all have brainwashed me.

  • RilesSD

Every time I see Carrie Preston in anything other than True Blood, I think she's The Waitress from Sunny. Every damn time.

  • lowercase_ryan

I can't stand that Mind Blown crap, but yeah, well done.

  • Lucie

You missed some of my favorite shows! But I think I can do them:

Veronica Mars: could go with the Dan Castallaneta connection again. But how about Keith was on the pilot of Party Down with Jane Lynch. Lynch played Cindy Lightballoon on AD.

Gilmore Girls: Alexis Bledel was in Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants with Amber Tamblyn, who dates David Cross.

Newsradio: David Cross appeared on two episodes of Newsradio (as different characters!)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Alyson Hanigan (and Charisma Carpenter) were on Veronica Mars with Ed Begley, Jr., who played Stan Sitwell.

  • Also for Buffy, Sarah Michelle Gellar was in Scream 2 with Portia di Rossi.

  • zeke_the_pig

I approve this message. Thoroughly approve it.
And goddamn, you got me with the Philadelphia link. God. Damn.

  • Bea Pants

Jessica Walter is also the voice of Mallory Archer. Double connection!

  • Koala is not a bear

And Jeffrey Tambor plays Lex Trexler, the head of rival spy agency, Isis, who has the hots for Malory (so George Snr and Lucille (and Oscar) are reunited). Apparently, Jessica Walter became interested in "Archer" after her manager saw the pilot script in which Malory was described as "Think Jessica Walter in Arrested Development".

Tambor also voices Torvald Utne, a United Nations' bureaucrat.

  • Joe

    The Wire.

  • Lucie

Hmmm, let's see...Michael B. Jordan (Wallace) played alongside Mae Whitman on Parenthood. She (her?) played Ann Paul Veal on AD. Boom, roasted!

  • Three-nineteen

Not to mention there's at least two Community links up there (Russo brothers and Jerry Minor), so Michael K. Williams works too.

  • Snath

Wow. How much homework did this one take?

  • Lucie

I like to think of it as "How much does it cost to bake something if you've got a well-stocked pantry?"

  • vdo86

I scrolled down here quickly to check if anyone had caught the Odenkirk thing.

Well, all seems good here. I'll be on my way.

  • stephanie

pretty sure Bob Odenkirk was the couple's therapist that Tobias and Lindsay see, then ends up wanting to become an actor too.

  • cj

This is true. Also, Bob was on Mr. Show with David Cross who plays Tobias.

  • Will Arnett has played Jack's archenemy Devon Banks in several

  • deltavoyage

I can do you one better with Breaking Bad. Bob Odenkirk guest starred as Lindsay and Tobias' marriage counselor in the episode "Visiting Ours."

  • Bob Odenkirk was also Tobias and Lindsay's marriage counsellor.

  • Okay, fine. But what about Kevin Bacon?

  • Bert_McGurt

Kevin Bacon was in Trapped with Rita herself, Charlize Theron.

  • Joxer the mighty

I got one connection better! Ron Howard (who narrated AD) directed Kevin Bacon in Apollo 13 :)

  • Arran

Yours is quicker, but any connection which passes through John Slattery is inherently BETTER.

  • lowercase_ryan

    Ron Howard was/is AD

  • Arran

He was in X-Men: First Class with January Jones, who's in Mad Men with John Slattery, who will be on the next season of AD. NAILED IT.

  • #Slowclap. Which reminds me, I really need to see X-Men: First Class one of these days. ~ducks and covers~
