Torchwood Series Two | More to Love Review

Comments

My father, a Viet Nam vet, absolutely LOVED 'Tour of Duty'. I think he had a thing for Marg Helgenberger.

I, on the other hand, loved 'Herman's Head'. I had a thing for William Ragsdale.

Posted by: Carolina Girl at July 29, 2009 3:09 PM

Herman's Head was out-friggin-standing. The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles was alright. The Heights was straight boiled excrement.

Balls out!

Posted by: Kballs at July 29, 2009 3:11 PM

I also loved Herman's Head.

The Heights was a show? I thought it was just a shitty pop group.

Posted by: Brie at July 29, 2009 3:15 PM

The Heights was bad. I used to watch it. It followed Melrose and last less than one season I think. It made Melrose look like Emmy award winning entertainment.

Posted by: Melody at July 29, 2009 3:18 PM

Well you can place me squarely in the Never Heard Of camp.
Except for Indiana Jones. I know a miniscule amount about that.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at July 29, 2009 3:18 PM

ohmygod The Young Riders was my faaaaaaaaaavorite show for a...well, however long it was on. I can't watch Josh Brolin in a movie w/o thinking about the hot, young cowboy he once was.

Posted by: JenVegas at July 29, 2009 3:20 PM

Edward Woodward who most Pajibans know from The Wicker Man, Gallipoli or Shaun of the Dead did a series in the late 80s called The Equalizer. It was so very well done that after he suffered a heart attack in the middle of it they got Robert Mitchum to step in and do a number of episodes until he could continue. It finally came out on DVD if anybody else was waiting for it.

Posted by: OscarTamerz at July 29, 2009 3:20 PM

HAAAAAAAAA I loved Out of this world!!!!!!!!! LOVEEEEEED IT! I still occasionally do the touchy fingers move just to see if it can actually stop the time.

Posted by: rio at July 29, 2009 3:23 PM

How about Get a Life? I still don't know why I laughed at that idiot so much.

Posted by: Cindy at July 29, 2009 3:24 PM

Oh man, I used to watch all of these except Tour of Duty, don't remember that one. I loved Herman's Head too.

Oh Sean Patrick FondleMe, how I continue to love you.

Posted by: MG at July 29, 2009 3:27 PM

I actually haven't heard of most of these, though Young Indiana Jones is flat out awesome. Especially the jazz episode.

Posted by: Alice at July 29, 2009 3:27 PM

Herman's Head was awesome! it had Hank Azaria and Yeardley Smith! Also Jane Sibbett, and young Mr. Ragsdale was indeed rather dreamy.

I am pretty sure I kind of vaguely remember Out of This World. Sort of. (And then I looked it up on IMDb and remembered it much, much better than I cared to.)

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at July 29, 2009 3:27 PM

Cindy,

Yeah, I used to laugh at Corky, too. Especially when he'd . . . wait. That was "Life Goes On" wasn't it?

*cheeks turn bright red*

Oh boy.

Posted by: Kballs at July 29, 2009 3:28 PM

The Young Indian Jones Chronicles!!! Where he got beaten up, contracted a deadly fever or fell in love with a fatally deemed european woman EVERY SINGLE EPISODE!
Maaaaan, that was part of that sunday tradition of ours, lunch at Grandma's, an hour or so playing out while dad slept off the roast, then WWF wrestling, and either TYIJC or like, Willow, The Goonies or The Princess Bride....those where the days

Posted by: Nadine at July 29, 2009 3:31 PM

I loved the Equalizer...sooo good. As for this list, I watched Young Indy, and maybe a few eps of Out of this World. Other than that, no dice.

Posted by: Smokin at July 29, 2009 3:31 PM

I was just thinking about "Herman's Head" yesterday, because Maureen McCormick (Marcia Brady) was on it once and she still looked great.

Posted by: Todd at July 29, 2009 3:41 PM

My father, a Viet Nam vet, absolutely LOVED 'Tour of Duty'. I think he had a thing for Marg Helgenberger.

You are thinking of China Beach, not Tour of Duty. Both shows were actually pretty good.

I loved Max Headroom and Profit. And by the way, these Seriously Random Lists are getting seriously...random.

Posted by: Jerce at July 29, 2009 3:48 PM

Got a feeling that the only one that made it to the UK and is my generation was the indiana jones chronicles. Which was perfect for four to eight year old me who loved indiana jones and read all the books.

Those films still make me wish Id gone into archaeology even the crystal shit kingdom. It may have had inappropriate aliens (not the anal probe kind, unfortunately) and a karen allen with all her sass stolen but the moment that theme music started up I was six years old and reading an indiana jones book where he had sex with the oracle at delphi.

Posted by: jim of the lower case at July 29, 2009 3:50 PM

Along those Herman's Head lines, I also like Flying Blind (Tea Leoni! Theme song by David Bryne!). I was also crushed, CRUSHED I tell you when Hidden Hills was cancelled.

Posted by: courtney at July 29, 2009 3:50 PM

Brisco County Jr.!!! gawd!!!

Or is that too well known for this list?

Liked Young Indy, tho.

Posted by: jen at July 29, 2009 3:51 PM

Oh, Out Of This World. I have no speakers at work so I cannot hear your theme song, which would make my nostalgia trip complete.

Posted by: Jeni at July 29, 2009 3:51 PM

MG,
rent Ten Inch Hero, then - Sean Patrick is still cute, trust me!

Of this lot, I only saw Young Indy, which I thought was only so-so. But that could be because I'm on the other side of the pond, and these shows didn't make it over.

Hell yeah, The Equaliser was good! Ditto Herman's Head.

Anybody here remember Space: Above and Beyond?

Posted by: Tarn at July 29, 2009 3:53 PM

Holy Hell. I had the Out of this World theme song stuck in my head last week and for the life of me I couldn't remember what it was from! All I could remember was that big Lite-Brite crystal and it drove me crazy. So, you know, thanks for jogging my memory.

Posted by: jM at July 29, 2009 3:57 PM

I was thinking about Herman's Head a week or so ago. The mister and I put in City Slickers for no good reason, and I again laughed my ass off at Yeardley Smith as the knocked up check out girl. We still use the phrase "a short haired woman named Chuck" from an episode where she got a prison pen pal or something like that.

Posted by: slower lower at July 29, 2009 4:02 PM

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH BOLD!

No good.

Posted by: Kate at July 29, 2009 4:09 PM

I would like to nominate Small Wonder.

Posted by: elizabeth at July 29, 2009 4:13 PM

Tarn, the phrase Ten Inch Hero just brings way too many filthy ideas into my head. Sean Patrick in Boondock Saints is a no-brainer, but I even watched Simply Irresistible for him. He's that dreamy :)

Posted by: MG at July 29, 2009 4:13 PM

I loved TOUR OF DUTY. I'd add in HOME FRONT, CHINA BEACH (although that actually had a following), WONDERFALLS, and THE OTHERS.

Posted by: Jenn at July 29, 2009 4:22 PM

Balls, out!!!

Posted by: Cindy at July 29, 2009 4:33 PM

Posting to join the "was just thinking of Herman's Head" choir, as William Ragsdale, who played Herman, popped up on a re-run of "Cold Case" I passed by on my channel surfing. He hasn't aged well. But much better than the guy who played "Animal" in his head. Yikes.

And I watched all of these shows religiously as a kid, especially Tour of Duty, which kicked all sorts of ass for being on CBS. The only one I don't remember is "The Heights", but once I get home where videos aren't blocked it'll probably come back to me.

Posted by: UnlessTheMoonFalls at July 29, 2009 4:33 PM

The first two I loved. I used to stay up to watch Tour of Duty with my brother, although I think the opening credits may have been the best bit.

Out of This World...I don't know why I watched that or when it was on. I remember her talking to the pyramid thing. I have no recollection of Burt Reynolds.

Posted by: Carrie at July 29, 2009 4:35 PM

Ten years from now you can probably add:

The Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles
Wonderfalls
The 4400
Eureka
Once and Again
The Naked Truth

Posted by: John W at July 29, 2009 4:36 PM

Oh hang on, I remember Tour of Duty opening to Paint it Black, was that the end credits, did we see a different version, or have I totally made that up?

Posted by: Carrie at July 29, 2009 4:37 PM

Space: Above and Beyond, yes! I LOVED that show, I was so pissed off when it was cancelled. Not that I knew it had been, it just went off with a cliffhanger ending and never came back. I loved Cooper Hawkes. 'Stay with the dead Nathan!'

Oh I wanna see it again now.

Posted by: Carrie at July 29, 2009 4:41 PM

Anyone remember a summer replacement searies called Roar? Heath Ledger was the star (pre-10 Things I Hate About You), and Shaun Cassidy directed it. IMDB summary says: "A young Irish chieftain fights against Roman encroachment".

Posted by: mswas at July 29, 2009 4:44 PM

ToD was the shit.

Posted by: ahamos at July 29, 2009 4:52 PM

I am in the 20%!?! Really, only 20% of the people fell in love with SPF and had massive debates with friends about who they'd prefer to marry, him or Harrison Ford? Only 20% of us swooned for Josh Brolin on Young Guns??? Only 20% still have "How Do you Talk To an Angel" not only on their ipods, but on the playlist they are currently playing???

(deep breath) I think I'm ok with that. I've got my boxed sets next to my "Space Above and Beyond" boxed set no one ever remembers either. Carrie, who didn't adore Cooper Hawkes?

msaws- I adored Roar. When he was in 10 things I was all "the dude from Roar got work! yay!"

Posted by: lilianna28 at July 29, 2009 4:56 PM

I so need the DVD boxset.

Posted by: Carrie at July 29, 2009 5:00 PM

WooHoo!! I was watching Steel Dawn last night and went, "isn't that bad guy Damnil the old dude in "The Young Riders?" Sure enough, it was. I totally forgot he was also the Councillor in the last two Matrix films. What does that tell you though that I remembered him from "The Young Riders" and not the Matrix films? Ohhh and that theme song, that brought back memories.

I used to watch "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" too. I remember that when I bought the Indiana Jones trilogy on VHS I got a copy of "The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones" the episode was "Treasure of the Peacock's Eye" Chapter 18 in the complete adventures of Indiana Jones. :-)

Brisco County Jr.!!! gawd!!!
Fuck yes. Bruce Campbell is the shit!!! He got that role because he was able to just flip himself over on his back. True story, he talks about doing it during casting in his book.

Posted by: Deistbrawler at July 29, 2009 5:10 PM

wow, Deistbrawler, I got that exact same VHS Indiana Jones set with the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles included! So funny. I'm sure its still at my mom's house somewhere.

Posted by: ami at July 29, 2009 5:24 PM

The Heights is number one on a forgotten TV shows list? How could anyone not know of its existence after it landed a slot on VH1's five year long marathon of one special about the 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders?

Posted by: Robert at July 29, 2009 5:27 PM

How about "The Middlemen"? That was a cool show that I know barely registered on the national radar but I know it had a small devoted following.

Posted by: John W at July 29, 2009 5:38 PM

I remember the "Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" (remember the Pancho Villa episode) and "Herman's Head." And of course, I bow before "Brisco County, Jr."

My nomination: "Parker Lewis Can't Lose" with Corin Nemec stealing the best out of Ferris Bueller for early 90s teens.

Posted by: Fredo at July 29, 2009 5:44 PM

Yes! Young Riders! I loved that show. Wish it was still on!

Posted by: grace b at July 29, 2009 5:49 PM

By the way. Does anyone else remember the one season series "Harsh Realm" that came out in 1999? It starred Scott Bairstow (The Postman, Wild America) and D.B. Sweeney (The Cutting Edge, Spawn). I know that might not be old enough for the list, but the TV industry is pissing me of for cancelling great shows, i.e. "Kings."

Posted by: ami at July 29, 2009 5:24 PM
Heh...Awesome!

Posted by: Deistbrawler at July 29, 2009 5:52 PM

Duuuuuuude I totally remember Young Indiana Jones. He was dreamy!

Shut up, I was like 12.

Posted by: figgy at July 29, 2009 5:53 PM

You are correct Carrie, "Tour of Duty" opened with "Paint it Black". I will admit that at the time I was ignorant that the theme song was by the Stones. It made quite a good accompaniment to shots of swooping Huey's and jungle.

Posted by: UnlessTheMoonFalls at July 29, 2009 5:56 PM

"Sledgehammer" Fucking insanely funny, completely dicked over by the studio. They were told that they wouldn't get a second season...so Sledge ended setting off an atomic bomb at a gym by mistake, destroying the entire city...only to be told right afterward they got renewed...only to get cut halfway to through the second season...oh, and they never got the same slot for more than a month. Its a gem if you can find it.

"Get A Life". Starring the under appreciated comedic genius of Chris Elliot and featuring the powerful performance of Bob Elliot, this show also didn't get one inkling of support from its network. Actually, Fox went out of their way to ruin it by forcing a terrible laugh track on the show. If...and its a huge if, you can actually find a DVD of some of the episodes, they actually took the trouble to remove the god awful track and its a lot better. I challenge anyone to sit through the episode of "Zoo Animals on Wheels" and not nearly die from laughter.

"Cop Rock" Because I like my police dramas gritty....and filled with singing and dancing numbers.

Posted by: Diablo at July 29, 2009 6:15 PM

Diablo, I was racing to the end of the comments to add Sledgehammer, that was such a funny show. Also I would like to nominate "Greg the Bunny"

Posted by: blacksred at July 29, 2009 6:19 PM

If you love Better Off Ted, you should choose not to forget about Life On A Stick, which has the same sense of humor but a less interesting setting (food court) and worse delivery, but the jokes are there.

Posted by: Max at July 29, 2009 6:30 PM

I seem to recall the original intro to Tour of Duty used "Paint It Black" By The Rolling Stones as it's theme...

Anyone else remember that?

Posted by: Tanner at July 29, 2009 6:45 PM

Okay, I looked it up and it did originally use "Paint It Black" And the intro kicks a million times as much ass with it than without it.

I imagine that they couldn't use it once it went into syndication.

Posted by: Tanner at July 29, 2009 6:50 PM

I loved Young Riders, but I was a horse crazy kid, so I would watch any show with horses in it. I found it funny that the series lasted much longer than the Pony Express , which went under after only 18 months of operation. Damn that new fangled telegraph, damn you to hell!
The funny ting is that the principle actors really didn't appear to ride that well, for the most part. The slo-mo galloping in the opening credits was always a little cringe worthy.

I watched Young Indiana Jones for a while too, but I was a little too old for it's intended audience, I think.

Posted by: Lindsey with an 'e' at July 29, 2009 7:10 PM

Sledge Hammer--I loved that show. Unfortunately, they put it against The Cosby Show (when it was still good), so it was DOA. In the first episode, Hammer shows what type of a guy he is. When the office soda machine eats his money without spitting out his can of soda, Hammer takes out his gun and shoots it. Multiple times.

Posted by: True_Blue at July 29, 2009 7:12 PM

Despite the compelling evidence you have offered, Mr. Rowles, I refuse to believe these shows existed. Out of this World? No. No, that never happened and you can't convince me otherwise. You could send me DVD's of the entire show's run and I would not believe you.

Posted by: greer at July 29, 2009 7:30 PM

I watched Out of This World every day after school. I remember being SO SAD when it went out of rotation. Replaced by Valerie's Family or something like that. So sad.

Posted by: Lollygagger at July 29, 2009 7:32 PM

What about "The Outsiders"? If you're going to have "Young Riders" then you've got to have "The Outsiders". That show was perfection.

Posted by: Melanie at July 29, 2009 7:35 PM

Holy shit Melanie I didn't believe you. I was going to correct you and tell you that it was a movie not a show but decided to look it up first. 1990 huh? 14 episodes huh? A follow up to the movie you say?
What the fuck, how have I never heard of this? It even had Billy Bob Thornton and David Arquette.

Posted by: Deistbrawler at July 29, 2009 8:05 PM

Sledgehammer!!! I am reminded of that show about once every 5 or 6 years. Brilliant. That actor pops up every now and again as a confused, smarmy character. Good times.

Posted by: Kballs at July 29, 2009 8:30 PM

"Crime Story." A stylized noir set in the 60s starring Dennis Farina as a tough-as-nails Chicago homicide detective fighting The Outfit? Fuck and yes.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at July 29, 2009 9:53 PM

Oh, and "Brisco County Jr." is just about the only teevee show my father-in-law and I agree on. Lord Bowler was straight gangsta.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at July 29, 2009 9:55 PM

Dustin, once again, you prove why my love of this site is so true.
The hair on my arms stood up while I watched the Young Riders intro. My brother and I taped them all. I think there was barely one season. One dark and crummy night, the tape warped and was eaten by our vcr. This was many many moons ago, and I believe we office spaced our vcr to punish it.

Thank you Dustin for bringing me out of obscurity yet again. Just for that I'm going to get a tatoo tonight to bring me up to 7, so I can fit into the survey too.

Posted by: Irene of the North at July 29, 2009 10:59 PM

Holy shit, "Out of This World"! I loved that show. But I don't remember Burt Reynolds on it... probably because as a kid I didn't know who the f*ck Burt Reynolds was.

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at July 29, 2009 11:04 PM

is no one going to mention clone high?

losers.

Posted by: gp at July 30, 2009 12:15 AM

Max Headroom, the aforementioned Profit, Square Pegs, Platypus Man (Richard Jenni), Once and Again, Gideon's Crossing (terrible pilot, but the rest was great), Popular ... Space Above and Beyond (sort of "Battlestar Galactica" before there was one) ... Police Squad, Sledge Hammer ... and (God love ya, Tracer Bullet) Brisco County, Jr.!

Posted by: Andy Geisel at July 30, 2009 1:00 AM

If Young Riders came out on dvd I would buy it tomorrow. I loved the chick who dressed up like a guy so she could ride. And my nine year old self was in love with Stephen Baldwin! Oh the memories.

Posted by: Austin asking for trouble at July 30, 2009 2:16 AM

My sisters and I LOVED Young Riders growing up.
we were always fighting about who got to have a crush on which rider, since evidently we couldn't all like the same one (at least according to my older siser).

Posted by: kari at July 30, 2009 3:49 AM

heee!

I remember watching tour of duty as a very young child in my third world country with only one tv channel having no idea it was about America's kill all the brown commies war and very much enjoying the Stones in the intro

Posted by: kaybie at July 30, 2009 6:09 AM

The mention of "Out of this World" (which i've never heard of) reminded me of another sci-fi show. After some digging I figured out what it is: "Something is Out There". It starred Bond-girl Maryam D'Abo and here was the plot description:

Two police officers investigate a series of brutal murders in which the victims have had bodily organs removed. When one of them questions a young woman who has been seen at the crime scenes, it turns out she is an alien from an interstellar prison ship and that the murders have been committed by a powerful xenomorphic alien which had escaped.

I remember it being somewhat scary and pretty cool. It lasted less than a season so my memroies are pretty scattered since it didn't get enough episodes to make sense.

Anyone else remember this one?

Also, it's fairly new but I would add "Invasion" to this list. Also "The Riches". Fuck you, FX.

Posted by: TylerDFC at July 30, 2009 6:59 AM

Also, Swan's-fucking-Crossing.

Posted by: elizabeth at July 30, 2009 8:41 AM

I have a lingering (so, at this point, permanent) crush on Sean Patrick Flanery because of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. I LOVED it when I was a kid. Absolutely loved it. The jazz one in Chicago? Which also introduced me to Jeffrey Wright? And had a Harrison Ford cameo? He beat the bad guys by playing a bum note on his soprano sax and causing the snow to fall off his roof onto their heads. Which completely thwarted their nefarious plans to...do something nefarious to him. Bad guys hate getting snow on them!

Posted by: Cara at July 30, 2009 9:10 AM

Alien Nation and Freaks and Geeks were great too.

Posted by: Katie at July 30, 2009 9:53 AM

young riders & young indy jones chronicles were my 2 favorite shows growing up! don't knwo about the other ones tho.

Posted by: gem at July 30, 2009 11:02 AM

*know*

Posted by: gem at July 30, 2009 11:06 AM

Had the biggest crush on Chris Pettiet who played a young Jesse James on the Young Riders. Wrote to him when I was eleven and he wrote a handwritten letter back w/some photos. Kept it for years. He died of a drug overdose a few years ago and it shocked me.

Posted by: scorzi at July 30, 2009 12:46 PM

No love for Shadow Chasers? Hey it starred Trevor Eve!
