31 Delightfully Dorky Behind-The-Scenes Motion Capture Images

By Joanna Robinson | Seriously Random Lists | December 30, 2013 | Comments ()

It must be hard, as an actor, to maintain a level of gravitas when you’re stuffed into gray jammies and covered in ping pong balls. Here are some of the best behind-the-scenes motion capture images that transform even the most prestigious actors into complete dorks. I could, of course, dedicate this entire list to the amazing Andy Serkis. He is the king of ping pongs.

Willem Dafoe and Samantha Morton— John Carter

Comments Are Welcome, Bigots and Trolls Are Not

  • Mrs. Julien

    Llamautner is a classic.

  • BlackRabbit

Have to say, this kind of thing is the real test of an actor's skill. If you care about them despite the motion-capture, they're doing it right.

  • BWeaves

So, Billy Crudup in Watchmen. I find it hilarious that there are no motion capture dots on his crotch, considering, you know, the results.

  • Bob Genghis Khan

Wow. Are we sure Buscemi didn't play Gollum too?

  • John W

No wonder these movies cost so much.

Did they really need to motion capture Lautner just so Stewart could pet him? Really?

  • basse buus

I think they mostly used cardboard wolfs in the other films

  • BlackRabbit

    Not just wolves.

  • foolsage

The hilarious thing is that Lautner literally wasn't doing anything; he didn't react at all. The CGI added all the wolf's movements.

  • Robert

That's not a behind the scenes shot from Holy Motors. That's the actual appearance on the film. You see the motion capture shoot but not the resulting motion capture as part of the story.

  • Wōđanaz Óðinn

Wasn't the whole point of that scene that you had the two actors act out a breath-taking dance only to have the result be a horrifically cheesy CGI monstrosity?

Edit: Though yeah, they appear exactly like that in the movie.

  • Wōđanaz Óðinn

  • Robert

Yes, you do briefly see the monster they created. Most of it is the two of them doing awesome stunts. I forgot how tacky that monster was.

  • bastich

The Lautner entry made me laugh, and the Jolie entry made me...um...never mind.

  • Mentalcase

The image of K-Stew petting Taylor Lautner like a gooood llama made me chuckle. Then I started to question why he would even need to be there. The wolf and him aren't even close to the same size or shape in body or face! They aren't in the same position in that shot! The thought that maybe the film crew was just fucking with him made me loose it...but then it dawned on me that they knew they had so much budget to burn on that garbage movie so, why not throw TL in a leotard even though it serves no functioning purpose?

I have nothing more to add to your comment regarding Jolie...nope...

  • F'mal DeHyde

They focused much more attention to detail on her face, unless the front of her suit had a LOT more "balls" than the back did.

  • The dog is from Call of Duty: Ghosts.

  • Patrick Garcia

Couldn't they get Andy Serkis to play the wolves in Twilight too? Would that have made things better?
