10 Actors You Probably Didn't Know Could Dance

By Joanna Robinson | Seriously Random Lists | October 5, 2012 | Comments ()

It's no secret that we here at Pajiba are fond of a good song and dance. And, it being Friday and all, I thought I should send you into your weekend with a song in that blackened, shriveled thing you call a heart. But this isn't one of your Rockwell, Rudd or even Tatumstravaganzas. These aren't cool dancers. Not a Timberlake to be seen. But these are Dapper Dan men, damnit. And, given the chance, they'll sweep you off your feet.

So, without any further ado, ten actors you probably didn't know could dance (and two you most definitely did).

Christian Bale and Robert Sean Leonard

Patrick Wilson

Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Chris Hemsworth

Jean Dujardin

Adrien Lester

Michael Fassbender

David Tennant

Ewan McGregor (Yes there are better clips of Ewan dancing that don't involve Cameron Diaz's truly awful singing...but this has always been a personal favorite.)

James Marsden

Tom Hiddleston

Hugh Jackman

*commenting on a post containing Hiddleston, regardless of content or merit*

  • Pants-are-a-must

You gotta give Chris Hemsworth more credit. Normally dancers are quite smallish, and he's so obviously not, but LOOK AT THOSE HIPS GO.

  • Idle Primate

can't find the clip, but JGL doing Donald O'Connor's Make Em Laugh number on saturday night live completely rocked my world, and blew me away as to his talents

  • Idle Primate

i assume that any classically trained/schooled actor/actress has taken lots of voice, singing and dance classes. We just often find it surprising, because modern film sensibilities rarely call on an actor to sing or dance. Some actors drift in on charisma(johnny depp) and have no background, but the one's who have gone to school probably got the whole kaboodle.

That said, Christopher Walken always surprises me.

  • PerpetualIntern

Whether or not any of these are new is questionable. However, any article that features the Hiddleston dance gets my vote.

  • NoPantsMcLane

What about Van Damme? His drunk dance in Kickboxer is the funniest thing ever.

  • Idle Primate

    any time that guy dances

  • susiederkins

You need a better video of Tom Hiddleston's dancing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... (from 1:06 to the end, though the whole thing is cool)

  • madderrose74

Actually, having watched David Tennant trying to learn a basic waltz with Jessica-Awesomesauce-Hynes, boy can't dance. He can nerd it up, sex it up, fly the TARDIS and play Hamlet, but he can't dance.

  • zeke_the_pig

Well I went straight to the Fassbender video, as I usually do, and though I was not EXACTLY dissapointed - in fact I was quite thrilled - I was still somewhat... disappointed. Still - a Fassbender disappointment is like a Big Bang producing a...[LACK OF ANALOGY]! Hah! How clever was that?!
Pajiba, my love, I am incredibly drunk.
    Have a good weekend!

The best one was the Jackman video. He's a real dancer while all the others seem to be just tapping their feet and twirling.

  • John W

As some who is rhythmically challenged I was way more impressed with Hugh Jackman after watching him dance as the Academy Awards host. Not to mention JGL's opening song and dance routine in SNL last year.

  • Vi

meh, swing kids, that's a lot of shitty-ass swing dancing right there. And what's with all the throwing? Swing dancing ain't a goddamn circus act. You know why the movies rarely show the feet of the dancers? Because a lot of the times the footwork is terrible.

Alright, enough of my bitching, here's so real swing dancing that's actually quite fun: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

  • gogotiff

JGL's Magic Mike dance was pretty recent. I'd say we "knew" then.

  • gogotiff

    Marsden crush: escalating

  • damnitjanet

    Afternoon just made monumentally better

  • Pawesl

Who doesn't know that Jackman sings and dances? he did it all over the Oscars one year. And you need better proof for Marsden. he didn't dance at all in that video. Just moved about kinda moving his hips.

  • Lotney

    They are "able to" "dance".
Have you seen SYTYCD? Those people actually "can" dance!

  • layla

Where's Christopher Walken when you need him..?

  • Yama

Everybody knows Christopher Walken can dance, hopefully.

  • FrayedMachine

JGL is such an instant smile and a good mood. Holy crap. Also, I could not watch that Hemsworth video for too long. I can't tell if I was feeling too flustered because he was Chris Hemsworth or if it was because it was of Chris Hemsworth dancing.

  • Was Patrick Wilson's run in The Full Monty too risque for this round up?

  • RudeMorgue

Man, that JGL must get hazardous quantities of tail. I worry for him. I do.

  • SabrinaHates Disqus

For realsies. I thought he was cute in 3rd Rock from the Sun, and that's the BEFORE picture in the "this guy will never have a girlfriend" meme.

  • Leelee

Shit, my phone freaked out and somehow gave you what is reading as minus three downvotes when I tried to correct a finger slip. If it doesnt resolve itself I apologise and will no longer attempt to upvote whilst on a train.

  • Brown

A number of these clips have been posted on here before.

  • athena23

I, for one, am not going to complain about having the Hemsworth clip posted twice. I'm actually considering petitioning to have it posted once a day. Give me 10 minutes with that man, that's all I ask...I mean, I'll take more but I'll accept 10.

  • blacksred

    line starts behind me!!!

  • Gabriela Gonzalez

what about Michael K Williams? Dude's as badass on the dancefloor as he is with a shotgun http://www.youtube.com/watch?f...

  • jzhz

He used to dance professionally, didn't he? Dude can move and he's not even trying that hard!

  • thekuster

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that more than half of these videos have been featured on Pajiba before... so yes, yes we already knew.

But also yes, still quite enjoyable the second (third, fouth...) time around.

  • athena23

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the author is pandering to her audience and that I, for one, greatly appreciate it. My co-workers, not so much...

  • marigi

Hugh Jackman is well known. The man dances and sings any chance he gets. The Oscars, just to name one instance...

  • KatSings

Most of these dance clips were REALLY popular. And Patrick Wilson and Hugh Jackman both have incredibly successful careers in stage musicals - everyone knows they can dance!! However misnamed the title of this is, I still enjoyed the hell out of every single one of these, so THANKS!

    Zooey & JGL <3

  • annie

As if no one knew Hugh Jackman was a song-and-dance man at heart! We certainly knew about Thor's ballroom moves and Loki's boogie. Someone on this site has a major dance-boner for them especially.

  • no one

Plus, If you ever see or hear Hugh Jackman in anything outside of Wolverine you would just assume he could dance.

  • I think this site has a general boner for them, not just when they dance.

  • e jerry powell

What do you mean "probably didn't know"? Come on! If you found all these on YouTube, it's pretty likely that a lot of people knew. I certainly did.

  • Fabius_Maximus

Not to mention that they did that same thing about a month or two ago.

That said, I really need to get to watching Blackpool.

  • Hazel Dean

    Blackpool is delightful!
