Donald Trump’s former lawyer/fixer pleaded guilty to multiple counts of tax evasion and bank fraud today. Sentences is set for December, and he’s likely to face 46 to 63 months in prison.

That wasn’t the big deal, however. The big deal is that Michael Cohen implicated Donald Trump in a crime.

Mr. Cohen told a judge in United States District Court in Manhattan that the payment was “for the principal purpose of influencing the election” for president in 2016.

Or, to put it another way:

It’s going to be very hard for Donald Trump to spin this, and it’s going to be very hard for Fox News to ignore this. The President’s lawyer admitted he committed a crime at the behest of the President (paying Stormy Daniels), and he’s going to prison for it (if Cohen cooperates with Mueller, he may get a reduction in sentencing).

Meanwhile, in another courthouse, the jury in the Paul Manfort trial came back with a verdict. He was found guilty on five tax fraud charges, one charge of hiding foreign bank accounts, and two counts bank fraud. A mistrial was declared for ten other charges.

Those eight counts alone should put Manafort in prison for much longer time than even Cohen.

Will any of this ultimately matter?

I have no idea. I just don’t see how it doesn’t. But it’s going to make one hell of a movie someday. If we survive.

This should be interesting, though.
