Ivanka Trump Offers Bizarrely Ironic Response to Nordstrom Cutting Her Brand

Last Thursday, Nordstrom announced it would no longer be selling merchandise from the Ivanka Trump brand. Unlike other retail shops who have removed Trump family brands for political reasons, citing the bigoted rhetoric and policies of President Donald Trump and the complicity of his children, who have all taken decisive roles in his administration, Nordstrom simply cited the poor sales of Ivanka Trump’s brand, probably related to active boycotting of it by consumers.

After all, the #GrabYourWallet campaign to encourage Americans to practice mindful consumption (AKA not patronize companies if you disagree with their values and business practices) is increasingly shaping how Americans are spending their money. It’s no surprise that this is affecting Ivanka whose values, from her backwards maternity leave plan to her vocal support for her godawful father, don’t align with the values of progressives who actually give a shit.

At any rate, the Ivanka Trump brand has since offered a uniquely bizarre response to Nordstrom’s decision to Refinery 29, stating with an unwaveringly hypocritical sense of moral superiority that a business’ “success” is measured by “integrity” as well as profit. Here it is:

“The Ivanka Trump brand continues to expand across categories and distribution with increased customer support, leading us to experience significant year-over-year revenue growth in 2016. We believe that the strength of a brand is measured not only by the profits it generates, but the integrity it maintains. The women behind the brand represent a diverse group of professionals and we are proud to say that the Ivanka Trump brand continues to embody the principles upon which it was founded. It is a company built to inspire women with solution-oriented offerings, created to celebrate and service the many aspects of their lives.”

Talk about irony — and for a number of reasons.

Firstly, there’s the fact that her father who literally is incapable of shutting up about how much money he has (and he’s probably lying, too) would wholeheartedly disagree with this bullshit narrative she’s suddenly pushing to excuse her brand’s lousy performance.

Secondly, if success is truly measured by integrity, she’s not doing so hot in that department either. She has yet to say a single word against a man who has called Mexican immigrants rapists while encouraging a culture of promoting and excusing sexual assault, and demonizing Muslims and all non-Christian PoC, really.

Ivanka is commonly given a pass as her sympathizers argue that she’s obviously too intelligent to genuinely believe any of her father’s bullshit, but her refusal to disavow any of his statements speaks volumes. She profits from her father’s success, and so despite whatever her personal views may be, you can bet that she’ll never speak a word against him. In this sense, her brand is the literal antithesis of integrity, so even by Ivanka Trump’s own standards, her brand isn’t really succeeding in any department.

Nordstrom will continue to sell the remaining Ivanka Trump products that it still carries until they sell out. Just days before announcing that it would be pulling Trump’s brand, an internal memo was sent to Nordstrom employees in response to President Trump’s ban on immigration from Muslim-majority countries, emphasizing the importance of diversity and recalling founder John W. Nordstrom’s origins as an immigrant.

“We currently employ more than 76,000 people who comprise different races, ethnicities and genders,” the memo stated. “We literally have thousands of employees who are first and second generation immigrants. Every one of your unique qualities brings a richness that allows us to better reflect and serve the multi-cultured communities we’re a part of and ultimately makes us a better company. We are a better place with you here, no doubt about it.”
