You Can't Buy Respect: The TCA Awards Vs. The Highest Paid Actors In Television. . .No Way, A LADY!

Right on the indignation of the Forbes List of the Highest Paid Film Actors, comes the fresh hell of the TV Guide Highest Paid TV Actors List. Just like the Forbes list, it’s chock-a-block full of middling talent/great talent who have settled for mediocrity. You can read more over at The Hollywood Reporter, but here are a few of the staggering figures to punch the highlights outta your hair:

  • The highest paid actor in television is this goober, right here. I like him more than some, but he’s still a goober. $700,000 per episode of “Two And A Half Men.”
Ashton-Kutcher.jpeg
  • Mariska Hargitay earns $350,000 an episode of “Law & Order: Sports Utility Vehicle.” I hear she’s pretty confident in her sexuality.
  • Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor-Allen and Keifer “I Used To Make $400,000/episode as Jack Bauer” Sutherland will each be pulling in $125,000 an episode on their new shows.
  • And, finally, Simon “Blight On Humanity But Evil Genius When It Comes To Programming” Cowell will make $75 million per season of “The X Factor.” May it be cancelled early and often. (It won’t.)

In other boob tube news, the Television Critics Association hosted their annual Awards Ceremony this past weekend. In the past, the TCA Awards have been a sort of Alterna-Prom to the overstuffed pageantry of the Emmy Awards. Snubbed and over-looked shows like “Battlestar Galactica” (Program Of The Year, 2009) and “Sports Night” (Outstanding Achievement in Comedy, 1999) earn awards and Pajiba darlings (“The Wire,” “Veronica Mars,” etc.) at least get nominated. That’s not to say the TCA always makes the best choices. (I’m looking at your “Big Bang Theory” and “Glee” awards, TCA, and I’m not gleeful. Not in the slightest.) But as TCA member Thomas Lewis of the LAist pointed out, there were perhaps some more disappointments than usual this year. Or maybe I’m just sore that “Terriers” didn’t win anything…again.

I will admit to loving the streamlined and genderless categories of the TCA Awards, and you can’t argue with their pick for Program of The Year. NO YOU CANNOT. JUST TRY IT. I also love that sometimes there’s a tie, as was the case this year with “Individual Achievement in Comedy.” Here are the 2011 TCA Award nominees. Their winner in bold, my pick in italics. I love Mariska.

That is all.

Thanks to you people every time someone says (or types) "clear eyes, full hearts" I tear up and get chills. I am such a sucker.

If only Mariska Hargitay's face still looked like it did in the header picture. She has had some horrible work done in the past couple of years.

Olyphant deserves to win everything ever. He won't, but I'll settle for seeing him in a tux at the Emmys.

Pretty good lists. I also would have preferred Terriers over Game Of Thrones. Terriers was simply better, but GoT was also excellent and both showier and more fun so I can't say I'm too bothered.

Explain to me how Mad Men can win Outstanding Achievement in Drama while Friday Night Lights wins Program of the Year. Anyone.

I'd cheer for FNL, but the fact that Battlestar Galactica won the same award makes the whole thing a joke.

Such a beautiful picture of Mariska.

The Voice was fantastic. All you "I hate reality shows" people missed out on a music competition with relevant music, production values not stolen from an elementary school's A/V closet, and judges with clout and name recognition in the music industry. Can't wait for next season. I can only assume they'll speed up the battle rounds to get to the live shows quicker.

I do not, however, like Friday Night Lights. I will not begrudge its fans as I can tell it's a well-made show. It's just not something I would seek out on my own.

Parks & Rec was the only comedy nominated for Outstanding Program, but was beat out by Modern Family in Outstanding Comedy? Lame.

Also, much as I love Nick Offerman & Ty Burell, I wish Amy Poehler had won. She is a mad genius.

Oprah Winfrey (I mean, you have to respect what she’s accomplished, even if you don’t enjoy her.)

Says who?

Posted by: Chico at August 10, 2011 5:55 PM

If Louis Ck doesn't win in the comedy categories I will become violently ill. The fact that you chose Modern Family over Louie has caused me to wish aids upon you.

Posted by: Muffin at August 10, 2011 9:18 PM

Louis CK for everything - stuff that he's nominated for and stuff they forgot to nominate him for.

Posted by: mjbokar at August 10, 2011 9:33 PM

DINKLAGE!

Joanna, I beg to differ with you and the TCA peeps in respect to Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries and Specials.

Sherlock I did love, but it was only 3 episodes and the middle one let the overall "season" down. Whereas Downton Abbey had a huge cast of characters, interweaving storylines and a time period to set up which it rarely faulted while doing so. I am very excited for September when the new season starts airing.

It's shocking to think that Glee got a positive review from this website once it came out. Curt is the single biggest minstrel character in the history of 21st century culture, including the buck toothed blackface bots in Transformers 2.

Posted by: Devil Child at August 11, 2011 12:19 AM

Nah, Louis CK is played out. He's just boring now. Smug, white and boring.

Posted by: Ender at August 11, 2011 4:30 AM

I am ashamed to say I watched Glee for the 1st season. I hate really bad singing and it's why I don't watch American Idol, and I can't believe I put myself through that (and Lea Michele). I guess I thought that Jane Lynch would erase all of Rachel's histrionics and Kurt's weepy crapola and Finn's blandness. Sadly, she did not. The only bright spot that remains dear to my heart is Artie's Safety Dance from Dream On. The rest can go glee itself.

The Voice was good.

Dinklage.

Where the fuck is Stephen Colbert? That man is CONTINUALLY disrespected when it comes to comparison with Jon Stewart; I love Stewart, but Colbert is a fucking GENIUS.

Props to "The Amazing Race."

GODDAMMIT NOT EVERYONE HAS CAUGHT UP WITH ALL OF THEIR RECORDED FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS EPISODES.

Posted by: SaBrina at August 12, 2011 11:36 AM

It's not related but I gotta say..“The Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: “We will not go quietly into the night!” We will not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on! We’re going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!” – Independence Day
