The Morbidly Obese Mother from What's Eating Gilbert Grape Has Lost 244 Pounds

The two most surprising things about this development are that Darlene Cates -- Bonnie Grape from What's Eating Gilbert Grape -- is suddenly 64 years old and 2) that she lived to be 64. She's lost 244 pounds (good for her!), but she still weighs 321 pounds, although she's hoping to shed another 100 pounds after an 11-month stay in the hospital triggered by a near-death experience. In fact, she hopes to return to acting at some point.

It'd take the perfect role, but she was outstanding in Gilbert Grape, the movie that launched Leonardo DiCaprio's feature film career (and elicited his first Oscar nom). Here she is talking about her weight loss.

Speaking of Gilbert Grape, and Now-Famous People You Didn't Know Were in Movies You've Seen, who remembers John C. Reilly from the movie?

Weird... I just rewatched Gilbert Grape last night. Great movie, great actress.

Just thinking about that movie makes me tear up. She was wonderful in it. I am nothing but happy for her.

That woman is not 64 years old. She looks incredible. Good for her for the weight loss, her skin looks incredible, she looks nothing like sixty four, she looks younger than she did in WEGG! Well done to her, wow.

Really, which has aged better, Darlene or Juliette Lewis?

I just remember how badly that guy from Emergency was treated by Mary Steenburgen.

Oh, I loved Emergency! Every now and then I think about the guy who accidentally swallowed the pop top he dropped into his beer. It still freaks me out.

Remember the episode where a kid ate a loaf of bread and it rose in his stomach.

I'm not familiar with this, is that from a movie or something that actually happened?

    dude, get some sleep.

She was amazing in GG, which was also the first time I'd ever seen Leo, he blew me away too...
