And With One Accidental, Crass Gesture, ABC Makes You Regret Giving Up On 'Once Upon A Time'

I mean sure, some of you are probably still watching it. There are a few truly talented people associated with ABC’s over-produced fairy tale sh*tshow. (I’m thinking primarily of Buffy alum Jane Espenspen.) I watched for about a season and a half but the show has such obvious, grating ties to the Disney take on fairytales and isn’t at all the cool “Fables”-esque show it might have been. So, despite my love for folklore, I had to give up. But somebody is still watching because Once Upon A Time was given an Alice-centric spin-off, Once Upon A Time In Wonderland. And that brings us to last night’s episode where ABC, in their infinite wisdom, decided to advertise the spin-off thusly.

Down the rabbit hole, indeed.

This season I've been doing other things while watching the show, so it's not so boring. The reason I still watch? Mr. Gold. The show would be nothing without him! And getting to look at Hook isn't a bad thing, either.
I also watch to see if Mary Margaret's caterpillar eyebrows get up and run off one day and if Emma's acting can possibly get even worse. She never disappoints, and gets worse and worse every week!

  • Kahntahmp

    Fascinating.
Back to MARVEL: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

  • Meli_V

The kid and I have kept with the show through the good and the bad, we're not delusional enough to deny the show is campy and often terrible, guilty pleasures can be fun. However neither of us were very happy with last season's ending, so for now two episodes sit on our DVR waiting to be watched. I know we'll give the show another try, but they may lose us this season.

  • Ricola

    Hey! That's no bunny trail!

  • Dominic

    lol
GINNifer should be on some cameltoe site ....

  • Shannon

I like this show. But I'll watch almost anything fantasy, King/Queen related, or with costumes. Like many of you, I agree that a lot of it is just awful. The worst for me is the green screen crap. Occasionally the writing/delivery can cause a cringe or two. And that kid, God bless him... I never noticed this unfortunate placement of the Wonderland advert last night. I noticed the White Rabbit, but didn't notice where he was on the screen in relation to the show in
progress. Also, during last nights episode in Neverland, I kept checking out the sets and wondering how much of it will look exactly the same in some of the upcoming OUATinWonderland episodes. Because this show has taught me to do almost expect that.

I was really excited about the Wonderland spin off because Alice In Wonderland is a personal favorite but the premiss has me a little disappointed. Why does she have to be chasing a boy to prove she's sane (normal)?

  • Dominic

what it is Shannon , is the rewrite of Alice as a strong female who goes and gets what she wants . The old version of Alice wouldn't play in this day and age . Alice meets the prince IN wonderland right ? and is there accidentally . This version changes the appeal of the character and her struggles ...
    Chasing a PRINCE ;isn't that different ?

  • Shannon

Well that changes my perspective completely. Thank you, Dominic. Now I'm back to full excitement for the spinoff premier. And I love that Alice will be properly portrayed as the total badass she is.

  • Dominic

;o)) I am just inferring this from the promos ...
It's like fighting for her man against another woman ; not lying chaste or troubled and waiting for him to save you ..
new paradigm for a new age
Alice is the Terminator lol ....

  • KatSings

Is there actually a way to watch this? Because both here and uproxx have the same thing, and when I click play, nothing happens.

  • Devin McMusters

I don't get anything either. It must be one of those prank things.

  • My kid and I watched it through most of both seasons, but we missed the last couple episodes. He said we could try again, since it really doesn't matter what happened, and they canceled Sinbad, which was our other terrible show to watch together.

  • damnitjanet

I watch it. Why? HOT. HOOK. Robert. Carlyle chewing scenery like it's made of chocolate. FABULOUS trashy Evil Queen costumes. Also, it keeps me from having to watch Hunting Alaska while Buying the Bayou at a Storage Auction, or whatever the fuck my husband would be watching.

Also, last night he was fighting a Lost Boy and told him something to the effect of, "remember what I did to Rufio?" My heart squeed a little .

  • Huckleberry

I am stuck in China for a few months with only 2 channels in English, one of them alternates OUAT with Steven Seagal and the other is showing Alaskan Survival Storage Duck Hunting Crocodile Fishing While Building A Skyscraper. I so wanted to like OUAT but even under these conditions I think it sucks.

  • stella

Plus Captain Hook is all kinds of hot.

  • Tinkerville

RUF-I-OOO! Oh man, I squealed out loud. And yes to all of this, especially Hot Hook. The man is an insane amount of sexy. If you've never heard him speak with his native Irish accent, look up some interviews. Your ovaries may explode.

  • Shannon

Oh good GOD, he's Irish? Give a girl a chance.

  • Marc Greene

    Silly rabbit...

  • BWeaves

    Tricks are for (oops).

  • Tinkerville

I still watch it and yes, it's an absolute shitshow. Which is a shame, because while it's campy, it has the potential to be a good campy show. Every now and then there will be a legitimately great episode and then it slides right back into crazytown.

I still watch it because I'm a sucker for silly fairytales and it reminds me of the ABC Sunday night movies I used to watch as a kid. Looking at you, Tenth Kingdom.

  • animail

Tenth Kingdom was actually an NBC show.

  • BWeaves

Did the white rabbit just jump through her hole?

  • BlackRabbit

"Musn't be late! Tick tock tick tock!"

  • Tinkerville

    Into, I think..

  • BWeaves

It looked a lot like a portal to another dimension.

  • Tinkerville

Boy, if I had a penny for every time a man's told me that.

  • Uriah_Creep

Seems like a very strange way to time travel. Timey wimey indeed.

  • Anna von Beav

Well that seems like poor planning.

    ...or GENIUS planning.

  • Manny Martinez

That made my day. Does the jabberwocky match the drapes?

  • BAM

This show is terribly ridiculous, but I'd rather watch it because it's semi-original, instead of all the copycat procedural shows on television. It's one of the few shows my wife and I can both watch together and neither of us will have hate feelings afterwards.

  • Ian Fay

I will hate this show forever because it means we're probably not getting an actual Fables show in at least 10 years, if not my lifetime.

Also, it had more time-wasting and pointless flashbacks than Lost.

Also also, don't spend half the season giving the evil queen a tragic lurve backstory. She's better just being moustache-twirlingly evil.

Is there a female equivalent of moustache-twirling?

  • Shannon

    What about lever pulling?

  • el_mediocre

Upvoted for point about Fables. Shit is tragic.

  • Sara_Tonin00

    long pointy fingernail tapping.

  • BAM

    Some women have moustaches.

  • Ian Fay

True, but they generally don't twirl them when being nefarious.

  • Dominic

hmm Ian no it's a soap-opera fact ( cause these are just hopefully better soap operas ) that the evil person was always TURNED that way , for some reason . Even if it's just genes kicking in . So they have to tell this back story for all evil characters. Thus flashbacks are necessary . kinda like show-within-a-show , since their relationships are different in the different times

  • Ian Fay

Given that my knowledge of soap operas pretty much ends with half-watching General Hospital with my mom while doing homework 20 years ago, I bow to your superior knowledge.

I just think Regina and Rumpy were better as love-to-hate-them characters.

  • Dominic

    lol ok

yeah I think he told them " I'm tired of washing off that sparkly makeup I have to put on in flashbacks " .
it's just standard writer's tactics to make u involved in the story . Or hating on it - as long as u watch ..
Even cop shows humanize the criminals

  • simplysarah

I'm like you, I made it a season and a half. I wanted so badly to love the show. I do like the cast but it just fell flat for me. I will check out " Once upon a time in wonderland" in hopes that it gives me what OUAT didn't!

  • webelos8

Yes, I watch it. Pure escapism and I don't have to think. Plus, the actor who plays Hook? SERIOUSLY. Of course it's going to have disney-esque ties to their fairy tales because:

    "Conglom-O: We Own You"

  • Sassy Pikachu

I too find Hook to be a very nice piece of eye candy.

I still miss the hunter though. So so much.

  • webelos8

Upvote :) Because I totally agree.

  • calliope1975

Jen Morrison twittered last night that Emma wears Graham's shoelace around her wrist as a reminder. Like, why would you do that to me show?

  • BAM

I think you meant to say: "Buy-N-Large"

  • webelos8

I definitely got my large media empires crossed.

  • Xander

Who on Earth would give up on OUAT? It's better then 90% of the shows out there and has one of the best casts ever. Both in terms of talent and in pure sexiness

  • Anon

Being better than 90% of the shows out there isn't setting the bar very high. There are a LOT of shows out there that are pure filler, and time is better spent watching the 10% of shows out there that are actually good.

  • Xander

Actually it is. I meant 90% of ALL currently alive shows. And since a lot of the best shows are currently in hiatus(some like Sherlock and AD, Orphan Black in a ridiculously long hiatus) OUAT is pretty much one of the very few currently active shows actually worth watching and following

  • Dominic

What Xander is saying ina polite way . is that 90% of Primetime TV is shit . so when you get a show that you feel IS in that 10% , you're gonna watch and damn all it's haters . Fantasy and Sci-Fi have similar fans ...
Why don't You tell us what shows on Primetime basic Cable you think are better than OUAT ?. Only a select few ....
Jennifer was a redhead ? ( what was she in as one ? ) then , she's one of those women that looks better as a blonde . Frames her face better ..

  • Dominic

I absolutely loved Orphan Black Xander . I think it fell victim to stupidity by TV execs , who thought it was just a quirky summer replacement show . Tatianna is so awesome ; they found an actress that can look like/play a science nerd AND a serial killer ! The Dome also got hurt by this because the stories can be better fleshed out with 26 episodes instead of 12 or 10 ! Now we have to wait more than a year to see the back story of her mother and her child-smuggling group . How DID all the clones get so spread around , but some in same country ?

  • Xander

I am still not too sure about Orphan Black. I desperately want to see more episodes and Tatiana is so talented it's silly but maybe...maybe a slower pacing with just 10 episodes per season we can savor it more. Maximise the awesome. I know April is still a long time away but I think it would be worth it

  • NateMan

We're going to have to agree to disagree on that one. Because that show made me want to drown a particular child actor like an unwanted kitten (which, just to be clear, I'd never actually do to a child actor OR kitten). And can we PLEASE stop giving Jennifer Morrison work?! Unless she at the very least goes back to being a redhead.

  • Xander

Jennifer Morison is mediocre and of course all children are a blight upon the world of tv but Robert Carlyle is brilliant. Ditto for Emilie De Ravin who is perfection. Meghan Ory is beyond gorgeous and so on and so on. OUAT is definitely worth following. The show also a steady storyline but not too in your face which allows for good stand alone episodes

  • lowercase_ryan

Except I have you, so I miss nothing and regret nothing AND I don't have to watch that crap.

  • lowercase_ryan

except some punctuation. pretty sure I'm missing some punctuation.

  • I think, technically, just one comma. It IS Monday, and unless you committed a felony on the weekend, I think we can go forward in good faith.

  • Fabius_Maximus

Said comma is also optional, if I'm not mistaken.

  • Wōđanaz Óðinn

    Correct, Sir.

The Oxford comma may go sincerely fuck itself.
