This is unfortunate news. Veteran Northern Irish actor J.J. Murphy has passed away, only four days after filming his first scenes in Game of Thrones. Murphy had been hired for the role of Ser Denys Mallister, the oldest member of the Night’s Watch. On Friday, the 86 year old collapsed and died.

Murphy still had scenes yet to film for Game of Thrones. It’s not known yet whether his character will be recast or written out.

Murphy — who worked in the Lyric Theatre in Belfast for many years — also filmed roles in the as-yet unreleased film Dracula Untold and the CBBC series The Sparticle Mystery.
