Newly Cast 'Game of Thrones' Actor Passes Away

By Dustin Rowles | Game of Thrones | August 11, 2014 | Comments ()

This is unfortunate news. Veteran Northern Irish actor J.J. Murphy has passed away, only four days after filming his first scenes in Game of Thrones. Murphy had been hired for the role of Ser Denys Mallister, the oldest member of the Night’s Watch. On Friday, the 86 year old collapsed and died.

Murphy still had scenes yet to film for Game of Thrones. It’s not known yet whether his character will be recast or written out.

Murphy — who worked in the Lyric Theatre in Belfast for many years — also filmed roles in the as-yet unreleased film Dracula Untold and the CBBC series The Sparticle Mystery.

Jesus George! Couldn't you have waited til he was ACTUALLY ON THE SHOW?

  • Someone had to go there for the rest of us. At least he wasn't playing a Stark.

    RIP, good sir.

I feel terrible for upvoting that, but not terrible enough to not do it.

I'm sorry for his family's loss and surprised, honestly, that given the realistic age of many people cast for things like this that it doesn't happen more often.

Jean Rochefort comes to mind with Lost in La Mancha...granted he was "only" 70 something but that "film" almost killed him and he looked older than 70s

  • Jo 'Mama' Besser

That documentary nearly killed me. It was like watching Mr. Blandings desperately lurch towards that dream house, only to end up living under a bridge.

  • And now his watch has ended.

Sad news. I think the actor who plays Aemon Targaryen is in his 90s.

  • Luke

    Yup 91

My sympathies to the mans family.

    Irony is just a BITCH.
