Just Give the Woman a Mul-ti-pass Already

Subject: Milla Jovovich, 34-year old American (Ukranian-born) actress, model & singer

Date of Assessment: September 10, 2010

Positive Buzzwords: Gorgeous, workaholic, Leeloo

Negative Buzzwords: Lack of focus, possible failure to live up to potential

The Case: Yes, that’s right. I’ve already pulled out the fucking “Mul-ti-pass” card, even though it means caving to platitudes already acknowledged by certified movie dorks everywhere. In fact, I should be ashamed of making such an obvious move that’s a cliché in and of itself; and is best followed by an argument that, after pulling off Leeloo in The Fifth Element, we collectively expected better of Milla Jovovich than crap like The Fourth Kind and the never-ending Resident Evil franchise. That’s not where I’m going, however, because I just don’t see the point in reenacting that little sci-fi dork drama, which you can already read at just about any movie site. However, I do understand the somewhat high expectations that arrive with the discovery of a supermodel who can actually act and is perfectly willing to do so while wearing some strategically-placed Ace bandages. Indeed, Leeloo was adorable and endearing in her primal strangeness, and Milla’s performance — a veritable mul-ti-pass in its own right — opened up a hall full of acting doors. So, what the hell happened?

Well, that was back in 1997, but let’s back up several more years to when 11-year old Milla was named one of the “Most Unforgettable Women in the World” by Revlon. At the time, I was going through the inevitable teen magazine phase, but at least my father had the foresight to require me to read a classic book for each purchased brain-cell killer such as YM or even (gasp!) Sassy. Now, I recall discovering Milla (who couldn’t have been more than 12-years old at that point) on the cover of Seventeen; about a year later, the publication again featured her in a full fashion spread and also mugging with then-boyfriend Balthazar Getty (boy, did she dodge a bullet by losing him, or what?). Another magazine discussed the young supermodel in auspicious tones, simply based upon her grown-up attitude and audacity (which, presumably, was best illustrated by mentioning that Milla pointedly advised a hairstylist that her hair looked “better wavy than curly.”) The implication, of course, was that this woman-child would one day be an out-of-control media brat.

They couldn’t have been more wrong.

From there, and long before The Fifth Element, Milla broke into the acting business with some television guest appearances — of particular note was a brief flash of comic timing as the Bundy family’s foreign-exchange student in “Married With Children.” Then came Return to the Blue Lagoon, which was panned by critics and gave her no more acting clout than her blink-and-you’ll-miss-it stoner chick from Dazed and Confused. Meanwhile, Milla recorded vocals for her only studio album, The Divine Comedy (named after Dante Alighieri’s work), which actually managed to receive much acclaim but held no commercial appeal whatsoever. Still, it’s not like Jovovich even needed the acting work or a record contract, for her modeling work has never ceased to bring in unfathomable amounts of money. In numerous years, Milla has hit Forbes’ list of highest-paid supermodels and even took first place in 2004. Nonetheless, the acting work has continued to accumulate, much of which is entirely forgettable if not entirely cringeworthy, which was my exact reaction to Ultraviolet. Beyond the geek-love fest of The Fifth Element, Jovovich has displayed the occasional flash of utter brilliance (.45); a few returns to comedic excellence (Dummy and Zoolander); and some deliciously B-grade thriller fare (A Perfect Getaway).

These days, mainstream audiences tend to think of Milla Jovovich strictly in terms of the ass-kicking Alice from the Resident Evil movies. In the spirit of full disclosure, I must admit to not watching every film in this franchise; while I didn’t mind the first installment, I just couldn’t make it through Apocalypse and haven’t even attempted Extinction. The position remains that Milla could certainly afford to be choosier; instead, she sure as hell ends up in a lot of shittastic movies. The Resident Evil flicks have made Jovovich a household name but, arguably, aren’t entirely justified for an actress who possesses the luxury of sifting through scripts at her own whim and dividing her attentions between popcorn fare and indie vanity projects. So, why does Milla Jovovich largely persist with such pathetic excuses for movies?

Unfortunately, I don’t have the answer to that question, and neither does Milla, who gave a rather confusing explanation while promoting Resident Evil: Apocalypse in 2003:

“I’m at this place right now where people are offering me a lot of money to do crappy films,” she laughs in her raspy Californian drawl. “Which is actually a great thing, because before they weren’t. Is it hard to say no? Yes, are you kidding? It goes against every Russian instinct I have in my body. Gee, my people lie, cheat and steal for not even a quarter of what I’m being offered, but if there was ever a time for me to say no, it’s now.”

Now, exactly what types of movies that Milla professes to decline shall remain a mystery, but it’s an obvious fact that roles like Leeloo don’t come around very often. Further, Milla’s something of an anomaly as a supermodel-turned-successful-actress, and just by virtue of appearing in more than one crappy movie, she’s already easily outdone the likes of Cindy Crawford.

Prognosis: Adopting the mindset of one who can cram an entire suitcase into a carry-on bag, Milla’s breakneck pace continues. She’s currently filming The Three Musketeers with three other movies in the can and another handful on the pre-production horizon. Presumably, she’s doing exactly what she wants to do; and with two lucrative careers — modeling and acting — and an apparent lack of pretention, I’m not inclined to rip Jovovich apart merely because she refuses follow the standard equation of alternating between romcoms and Oscar bait. Besides, if I have to look at those damn Resident Evil: Afterlife posters, at least looking at Jovovich is a much better prospect than, say, Kate Beckinsale or Jessica Biel.

Don't forget her turn as Joan of Arc in The Messenger.

Whoa, read the clause "have made Jovovich a household name" twice in two sentences and my brain froze as I thought I was re-reading a sentence(Sorry).

I have not found her acting to be horrible, and like you say, she does do good stuff from time to time. Being married to Paul W.S. Anderson, the guy who has written and directed those Resident Evil movies, kinda means she still does them. Granted, I kinda liked the first, second awful, and the third was alright, so I don't know what to expect from this new 3-D one (except things being flung at the screen, as I can tell from all the promos and trailers). She's pleasant on the eye and doesn't seem to take herself too seriously, which is a nice change of pace.

Yes, I too wish she would do something other then ass-kicking films, though she's not bad at them either. No, not a 18th century period piece, but maybe as like the cool mom or something. You figure it out Hollywood.

Posted by: MTGColorPie at September 10, 2010 3:57 PM

She's also in Stone with Ed Norton & De Niro at TIFF... heading out to catch it tonight. Looks like it might be good.

Posted by: Pea at September 10, 2010 3:58 PM

I love Milla... she is usually the best part of whatever she's in... she just has this... something about her...

and I usually hate zombie movies *ducks* but Godtopus help me... I love those cheesey Resident Evil movies...

Posted by: SaucyWench at September 10, 2010 3:58 PM

I like Milla and other then the obvious reasons its hard to figure out why. She seems quite likable and I think she's a decent actress. But she definitely has a charisma that she brings to the screen and it works well for her. I'd like to see her break out of genre flicks for a while though since by all accounts RE: Afterlife is fucking atrocious.

I liked her in The Perfect Getaway. That was a pretty nifty movie even if it was kind of a big cheat.

Posted by: TylerDFC at September 10, 2010 3:59 PM

Just by the way, The Divine Comedy is a pretty good album, IMHO. It's got some nice tunes and she has a pleasant voice. She's listed as the composer, if we believe that. There's even boobies (not hers) on the cover. What more can one ask?

Posted by: jb at September 10, 2010 4:13 PM

I like all the RE movies, 5th Element, even Ultraviolet, but then I'm not a hipster doofus...

Posted by: Adam C. at September 10, 2010 4:35 PM

Meanwhile, Milla recorded vocals for her only studio album, The Divine Comedy

I remember seeing her music video for this album on Beavis & Butt-head. Ah, childhood....

Her obvious allegiance to the Resident Evil franchise (due to being married to Paul W.S. Anderson) notwithstanding, I think her biggest problem has been an unwillingness to tackle simpler material. She doesn't do rom-coms or Lifetime-style dramas. I can't think of any comedies she's been in or any supporting roles as the cute best-friend or the sexy other woman or...well, anything.

In a way, Leeloo hurt her because she's been typecast into roles of sexy, action warriors.

BTW, the less said about Ultraviolet, the better. I've never wanted to commit violence against cute things before or since.

Posted by: Fredo at September 10, 2010 4:39 PM

I actively seek out excuses to say that Milla was fantastic in Dummy. Anyone who thinks of her only as Alice and/or Leeloo needs to see that movie. She totally owns it.

I bought The Divine Comedy for myself on my twenty-first birthday. (What, like my army buddies were going to buy me gifts? Not fucking likely. They did get me drunk, though.) I have listened to it about fourteen million times since then. Great album.

Posted by: Todd at September 10, 2010 4:46 PM

I'm with eddie walker up there. The Messenger certainly elevated her in my eyes. She turned in an exquisite performance, I thought, and one that will be difficult to live up to.

Posted by: Smokin at September 10, 2010 4:51 PM

I tend to like her in movies, but I went to see one of her shows and was deeply unimpressed. She was opening for Toad The Wet Sprocket (my friend was working security so I tagged along) and she must have pissed off the sound guy because you couldn't hear a word she "sang". Even before that though she was kind of bratty about the whole thing, like it was all so very beneath her. Which it probably was.
Wow, that was a really long time ago.

Posted by: king at September 10, 2010 5:09 PM

There are worse fates than starring in a successful horror/action franchise. She's good as Alice, and she'll stretch again when she chooses. She's not why The Fourth Kind is bad; she's fine, the script is awful. Once people stop seeing her as a body, she'll have her chance to really shine. Methinks she's turning down crap romantic comedies that become the inescapable rabbit hole for other actresses (cough Kristen Bell).

She's talented. I like her. I wish she'd take another crack at music. Her album was like a less-electronic alternative to Bjork. Very interesting to listen to.

Posted by: Robert at September 10, 2010 5:10 PM

The Messenger was a wonderful, painful movie to watch to me - it's like how many people will acknowledge Schindler's List or Saving Private Ryan was a great (or merely just good or ok, if you're Pajibian), but we're not going to watch it again anytime soon.

Million Dollar Hotel, a craptastic film, has a great little soundtrack - provided you like Bono, Eno, Frisell, Lanois and Jovovich. Milla gets ripped for going distorted and off-key as an artistic choice, but I like it.

Posted by: idiosynchronic at September 10, 2010 5:24 PM

I love Milla Jovovich for reasons that are obvious (to me): she kicks ass, and she's Leeloo-Dallas-Multipass funny. However, I also love her for subtler reasons I can't quite articulate.

No matter how many crappy movies she appears in, that will never change.

Posted by: MM at September 10, 2010 5:31 PM

In addition to having a beautiful voice (her album was actually kind of lovely and she had a great singing scene in The Claim), she also had a fashion line with her friend named Jovovich-Hawk. It was so amazing and I'm so sad that they closed down. But I guess between the movies, modeling, singing, married life and motherhood, she was probably getting a little stressed.

Posted by: A Tiny Machine at September 10, 2010 5:31 PM

Her eyes. She has gorgeous eyes. Oh and she can act...sometimes.

Posted by: admin at September 10, 2010 5:54 PM

I love any actress who keeps it real.

Posted by: ceejeemcbeegee at September 10, 2010 5:58 PM

Firstly, I think Milla is a true creative. I don't think Hollywood success or even critical acclaim are really as important to her than they are to most people she's compared to. She seems to have inspirations that she follows to their conclusions and the rest of the time, it looks like she's having fun.

Her career, I'd classify as being someone trying to achieve very level, stable flight. She isn't going for dizzying heights, knowing that the fall from such heights often spells the end of a career. And I think she knows that trying desperately to achieve recognition will often only get you recognised as desperate.

She's an accomplished musician and her modelling continues to defy the age related fall off so many models face.

And, no matter how bad a movie she's in, and I'll admit, she's been in one or two shockers, Milla is always captivating and entertaining. She brings an "A" game to every role. Or perhaps she's just so naturally enchanting that it's something that can't be switched off, even whilst wading through mediocrity.

I see her being around for as long as she want's to be around.

Posted by: DarthBrookes at September 10, 2010 6:16 PM

I've just always thought she was one of the purdiest women around. Maybe needs
a bit more curvy sumtin-sumtim... but beautiful face.
Sidenote: she's been working with Maynard James Keenan (Tool / A Perfect Circle /
etc) the past few years, doing some singing and such, with a 'performance troupe'
called Puscifer.

Posted by: Ms MoMo at September 10, 2010 6:50 PM

she did You Stupid Man which was a nice little rom-com, nothing special, but watchable.

I keep watching the terrible resident evil movies because of her. I hate to say it but the best one was the computer animated fourth installment that no one talks about.

Posted by: idleprimate at September 10, 2010 7:10 PM

She tore through the screen in "The Messenger" and recorded music with Maynard James Keenan. Girl's gonna be okay.

I'm giving her the pass if no one else will. Loved her in Fifth Element and she made an excellent Joan of Arc. I liked her version of Joan more than the Lee Lee Sobieski one.

Posted by: Four Eyes at September 10, 2010 8:52 PM

For me she kills it when she starts talking in her normal, non-Leeloo voice. Just too raspy and bitchy. I didn't like Joan much simply because I got tired of the crazy, traumatized way she played her.

My favorite scene is still when she barely flashes her lil Leeloo in the lab scenes in the first resident evil.

Posted by: Protoguy at September 10, 2010 10:55 PM

The Resident Evil flicks have made Jovovich a household name
---
You're kidding, right? I will suggest 98% of households in the U.S. couldn't even PRONOUNCE her "household name." I mean, I follow the movies fairly closely -- I'm a regular here, after all -- and a couple weeks ago I had to ask: Is it MEE-ya or MILL-a or MEE-la or JO-yo-vich or YO-yo-vich or ... you get it.

"Household name"? I don't think so. That's like calling a TV show a "hit" because it has 5 million viewers. All that means is 295 million don't give a rat's patoot.

Posted by: , at September 11, 2010 1:35 AM

Agreed. I think she can do some amazing things with the right movie. Hell I honestly think her role as Leeloo was Oscar worthy. It was better then Kirk Lazarus and she completely and utterly immersed herself into the character which is what acting is all about

And I adored her in Dummy.

She seems to be able to portray everything excellently. From utter cuteness in the Blue Lagoon, complete immersion into the character in the Fifth Element, comedy like in Dummy, drama like in .45, action everywhere and even some rom com like in You Stupid Man. She seems to be really versatile

I really hope she gets some good movies thrown her way. I can see her having a long career and for now she seems to well just have fun. I mean have you checked out her twitter account? The women seems to love the place where she is. However I think that with time she will want to do a few Oscar baits as you say

So in conclusion I love me some Milla in any way ,shape or form :)

Oh and this is also a good profile of Jovovich :)

Grammar queen nitpick:
There is a word out there that is a noun serving as companion to the adjective pretentious, but it is not pretension, it's pretense.

Other than that, spot-on. I give Jovovich more props than I give Romijn, and I like Romijn. Both of them stink in terms of boyfriend picking, though. Let's not forget that folie a deux that was crapped out by Besson known as The Messenger. Bergman she is not.

Grammar queen miss I'm afraid. Pretension is the correct word to use in that context, pretense is indeed an alternate word used in other contexts such as "He made great pretense to sophistication". Were he to give that up, he would lack pretension.

In fact I quit using Clinique Acne Solutions kit after burning and itching...? For the past few years, I've been having some serious problems with my skin. I'm 25 years old and thought I was past the acne phase. I admit that I will not consume healthy and sometimes go days at a time without drinking any water, but I've heard that food and drinking cokes causing acne is a myth. I've been to a dermatologist ahead of, but the products he prescribed didn't work. I've an appointment to see another dermatolgists (who is supposed to be great), but I can't see him until Feb. 28. In the meantime I thought I would try Clinique Acne Solutions (cleaner, clarifying lotion, moisturizer). The couple days, it seemed to work ok. But after using it, my skin burns, itches, and is peeling. And its causing thte skin around my lips to break out. I do not know what to use. I can't go until Feb. 28 without using situation on my skin, but it seems as if everything I use doesn't work. And I've tried it all....Mary Kary, Neutrogena, Dove, etc. It really is just so frustrating.
