He’s given us An American Tail, The Secret of NIMH, The Land Before Time, All Dogs Go To Heaven, Thumbelina, and Anastasia. Now undersung animation auteur Don Bluth wants to bring us Dragon’s Lair. But he needs your help.

In the video below, Bluth and producer Gary Goldman explain how this would be an adaptation of their 1983 video game that was all the rage at the arcades, as well as how you can help bring it to the big screen. (Spoilers: it involves an Indiegogo donation.)

It’s crazy that Don Bluth needs to depend on us for funding. The man is a legend in his field and a definer of countless childhoods. But he hasn’t directed a feature since 2000’s Titan A.E., which tanked hard. It seems Bluth must prove he’s still got it, meaning the ability to capture audiences’ imaginations and pull them into theaters. So, he’s asking fans to contribute $250,000 to make a sizzle reel that’ll be used to pitch to big fish financiers.

Incentive gifts include standard swag like DVDs, t-shirts, personalized thank you cards and autographed trinkets. But for a $400 donation, you get a slew of perks including 1 1/2 hour interactive lesson with Don Bluth via video chat. Got $10k lying around? You can buy your way into a set visit.

With 40 days to go, they’ve raise over $189,000. So every little bit helps. Hell, kick in $5 and you get a 39-page animation hand-out exclusively for Don Bluth animation Master Classes, plus the knowledge you’re giving a little something back to the man who invented Fievel Mousekewitz.

Kristy Puchko may still weep openly over American Tail.
