This ABC Show Has Left Fans Wanting More As It Breaks for Winter Hiatus

Things were starting to get interesting on High Potential this week. However, after only seven episodes, the show is now on break until January. Thanks, ABC. I hate it.

Over these seven episodes, the team solved the Gamemaker mystery and introduced us to Captain Nick Wagner (Steve Howey), accompanied by his questionable mustache (which I honestly didn’t mind). We established there’s a mutual attraction between Wagner and Morgan; he even shaved off the mustache because she made fun of it. Mekhi Phifer’s character, Arthur Mills, got us further down the road toward solving the mystery behind the disappearance of Ava’s dad. And this week, Morgan got busy with a sexy British investigator (All My Children’s Aiden Turner) who’s in town to help them solve an art heist. His presence made Wagner and Karadec act a little crazy, which definitely felt like it was setting up a future awkward love triangle.

Try not to think about any of that for the next ten weeks! But also try not to forget about any of it when the show is back in January! Will Trent used to pull different, but similar, shenanigans. The first two seasons were short and had a month-long break in the middle. I have to believe the ratings made them change that. Which means we, the fans, made them change that. Good job!

I like High Potential. It’s fun, it dabbles in absurdity when Morgan visualizes the solution to problems. It’s smart, and it’s cozy in that you’re probably not going to be traumatized by anything. But it’s not so silly that you want to roll your eyes at Kaitlin Olson’s character too much. However, she did have a spectacular crashout in this week’s episode. I think they’ve done a good job translating the original French version for American sensibilities. But none of that means much if they’re going to ruin the momentum of the storytelling by putting it on hiatus after only seven episodes.

I remember when all of the networks ran their shows on the same season schedules. We’d get an occasional nailbiter of a cliffhanger that kept everyone talking over the summer. But it’s only November. We need our stories to get us through the long, dark nights of winter. It’s in our genetic code. We used to huddle around the fire and tell stories to stay warm and keep our minds active during the cold months. I know there are plenty of other shows on right now. Plenty. But to start a season of storytelling on High Potential and then leave us waiting through the worst of winter for the rest of it feels mean.

Hopefully, in January, we’ll find out who the body was that Karedec found in the parking lot of the museum, whether or not the hot British dude had something to do with the museum heist, and finally wrap up the search for Ava’s father. Until then, all episodes of High Potential are available to stream on Hulu. Along with a million other shows that didn’t abandon us to survive the long, dark winter without them.

High Potential will return on January 6th.
