After being unable to watch Stranger Things Season 2 all weekend, I successfully avoided spoilers and watched all nine episodes today.
I’d like to thank Godtopus, my couch, my pajamas, and my Batman quilt for helping me to achieve my dreams. And for finally being able to enjoy something popular at the same time as everyone else. It feels great!
Spoilers from here on out, however mild.
That being said, I think that Stranger Things really nailed the whole season, with episode 7 being fine for what it was and the ending being a gift we all deserve after those two seasons. The only question I have is this: What was the point of Max having a step-brother, Billy?
Dacre Montgomery (Power Rangers) shows up in town with his spunky little step-sister Max (Sadie Sink). He’s got some sort of stringy, curly mullet and subtle ‘stache combo that high school girls dug back in 1984, a blue Camaro, a nice ass, shirts that don’t button past the bottom of his pecs, and the sort of temper generally reserved for villains that decimate cities.
As soon as he roared into the parking lot and talked to Max like she was garbage, I waited for some big reveal. Since we saw Eight in the opening car chase and Billy makes odd remarks to Max about it being her fault they were family now, I thought they would be Numbers as well.
Okay. Billy keeps telling Max to stay away from our main group of kids, especially Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin). I waited for Billy to don a Grand Dragon robe or something, but he only ever hinted at race being a motivation for keeping Lucas away from Max. It seemed like he was just pulling a full-on Chet: being a dick because he gets off on it.
I suppose Billy gives the already redeemed Steve (Joe Keery) more chances to be the Good Dude we already knew him to be, but it’s useless. Sure, Billy shows up at one point and begins to fight Steve when there are more important things happening elsewhere, but I still need to know why. Some people may argue that the Billy and Steve fight allows Lucas, Max, Mike (Finn Wolfhard), and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) to enact their plan to enter The Upside Down by stealing Billy’s Camaro and rendering Steve unable to stop them, but I think there would have been another way.
Someone explain to me WHY IS BILLY? WHY DID I HAVE TO WATCH THIS ROB LOWE-ISH MULLET YELL HIS WAY AROUND HAWKINS? WHAT IS HIS MISSION? I NEED TO KNOW WHY BILLY WAS CREATED. I NEED TO KNOW MORE THAN ANYTHING.
