Did you ever watch the Paddington movies and think, “Wow, this is almost perfect but it’s missing an expletive-riddled rant by an angry Scottish political advisor?” Well, fear not, because my fanfiction is about to come to life. Okay, not really, but this is still great news. Paddington 4 is in development, and Armando Iannucci has been brought on board to write it.
That’s right. The Oscar-nominated and Emmy and BAFTA-winning legend of TV comedy who gave the world The Thick of It and Veep is going to try his hand at something optimistic and not overladen with endless reminders that our systems of power are broken. Bold strategy!
Variety confirmed that Iannucci, who is currently featured as a contestant on Taskmaster, will take on Britain’s most beloved Peruvian immigrant for the next instalment in StudioCanal’s hit franchise. He will be joined by his long-time writing partner, Simon Blackwell, who also worked on Veep. For directorial duties, Variety says that Dougal Wilson, best known for music videos and TV ads, will return having filmed Paddington in Peru.
How would Paddington cope with meeting Malcolm Tucker? Would his kindness help mellow out Peter Capaldi’s legendary mouthy SPAD until he decided to retire in the Scottish countryside with a few marmalade sandwiches? Or would he say something so hilariously upsetting to the bear that it would cause an international incident? Answers in the comments, please.
