Three Was The Magic Number On a Very Special 'Doctor Odyssey'

Doctor Odyssey spent 34 minutes last week being a Very Special Episode about suicide prevention. Margo Martindale chewed up some scenery playing the privileged mother of a privileged bride (Kelsea Ballerini) who booked the entire cruise ship for a private wedding.

I spent those 34 minutes trying to figure out how they were going to get Joshua Jackson out of his shirt, as has been the custom on previous episodes. I was prepared to be disappointed because it would have been weird to shoehorn some light nudity into a Very Special Episode. But I should have had faith. I should have known that this soapy, sexy love boat crew would not let me down.

The last ten minutes of the episode were devoted to champagne-drunk talk about bucket lists that naturally segued into champagne-drunk talk about threesomes. And then the episode closed with Phillipa Soo’s Nurse Avery initiating a threesome between herself, Tristan, and Doctor Odyssey himself.

It seems like the natural turn of events when one is drunkenly contemplating the fragility and wonder of life. And, to quote Nurse Tristan (Sean Teale) from the episode: Threesomes are “really difficult to organize. People get drunk, they pass out, they get cold feet.”

The less planning, the better. And when Phillipa Soo gives you that come hither look as she slides further down onto the couch, you know she means business. Best not disappoint her, boys.

I tried to find a screenshot or a GIF to put here because I don’t feel like mere words do justice to how perfect and utterly bananas this moment was. Alas, ABC is still owned by Disney, so they’re keeping their sexy stuff hidden away. As a treat, you can have this grainy screenshot from Hulu instead.

Doctor Odyssey is only on week six of its first season and every episode has been a sexy little gift wrapped up in a sailor’s suit. I hope it gets picked up for season two.

Doctor Odyssey airs Thursdays on ABC and is available to stream on Hulu/Disney+
