You’ll be forgiven if you’ve briefly forgotten the existence of Shadow and Bone, the Netflix adaptation of the first book in what has come to be known as the Grishaverse (a series of fantasy novels written by Leigh Bardugo), considering that the season aired back in spring of 2021. Though I found the first season surprisingly entertaining, due mainly to its delightful supporting cast and Ben Barnes’ sultry ways, I admit that the show fell off my radar over the two-year span. The arrival of the second season, however, should hopefully be enough to bring it back to viewers’ attention, especially now that the full-length trailer has landed:

There are a few reasons to be excited, not least of which is that it looks as though we’re going to get to see Ben Barnes turn it up to an eleven (so much glowering!). I’m especially looking forward to the return of Kaz, Jesper, and Inej (Freddy Carter, Kit Young, and Amita Suman, respectively), the motley band of rogues who seek only to eke out a morally dubious living but suddenly find themselves caught in a battle of good versus evil. It seems there may be a little something for everyone here, including several romantic threads, some freaky shadow monsters, and, from the looks of it, at least one dragon. From the official Netflix synopsis:
Alina Starkov is on the run. A beacon of hope to some and a suspected traitor to others, she’s determined to bring down the Shadow Fold and save Ravka from ruin. But General Kirigan has returned to finish what he started. Backed by a terrifying new army of seemingly indestructible shadow monsters and fearsome new Grisha recruits, Kirigan is more dangerous than ever. To stand a fighting chance against him, Alina and Mal rally their own powerful new allies and begin a continent-spanning journey to find two mythical creatures that will amplify her powers. Back in Ketterdam, the Crows must forge new alliances as they contend with old rivals and even older grudges that threaten not only their place in the Barrel, but their very lives. When a chance at a deadly heist comes their way, the Crows will once again find themselves on a collision course with the legendary Sun Summoner. Based on Leigh Bardugo’s worldwide bestselling Grishaverse novels, SHADOW AND BONE returns for a second season of new friendships, new romance, bigger battles, epic adventures — and a shocking family secret that could shatter everything.
Season two premieres on Netflix on March 16th.
