Finally, some Bravo news that has nothing to do with who Tom Sandoval is sleeping with. This time it’s about who Taylor Armstrong is sleeping with.

The Housewife turned Friend-Of officially joined a small but mighty club when she came out as bisexual on this week’s episode of The Real Housewives of Orange County, while the cast enjoyed a trip to a ranch in Montana.

“I’m bisexual,” Armstrong said when Tamra Judge asked everyone in the group to offer a fun fact about themselves that the others may not know.

“Most people are surprised to find out that I’m bisexual probably just because of stereotypes,” Armstrong explained in a confessional interview. “I mean it’s not something I broadcast, but I’m open to all people who have great souls that you can love.”

Armstrong is the first Housewife to jump franchise cities, having originally appeared on Beverly Hills, but she’s now the third to come out on Orange County, following in the footsteps of Braunwyn Windham-Burke and Noella Bergener. The Queer Housewives Club also includes Julia Lemigova of The Real Housewives of Miami, who is married to tennis legend Martina Navratilova, making her the first Housewife to be married to a woman, and soon-to-be RHONY cast member Jenna Lyons, who will be the first openly gay NYC Housewife.

Maybe a broader spectrum of sexuality being represented on Housewives will lead to a rethinking of the very conceit of the franchise—that these women are housewives in the traditional sense. Maybe, if more queer women are cast on the shows regardless of their marital status, we won’t need flops like The Real Friends of WeHo, which, yes, was MTV and not Bravo, but we all know what they were trying to do there.

There have been other recent queer reality shows that weren’t terrible, though, including The Ultimatum: Queer Love and season 8 of Are You the One?

Is it naive to hope this means that the reality television industry might finally be catching up with…reality?
