On June 1st, Kim Cattrall confirmed her much-anticipated return to the world of Sex and the City with an Instagram post linking to a Variety story, which announced her cameo on season 2 of And Just Like That. She made no comment on the story except to say “Happy Pride” in the caption.
The story described the cameo in detail: Cattrall will only appear in one scene, in which her character of Samantha is talking on the phone to Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie. The scene was reportedly shot in one day, and Cattrall did not have to see or speak with Parker or even with showrunner Michael Patrick King, both of whom she has publicly alluded to conflict with, amidst previous claims of never reprising her famous role.
“I am a little bit upset that you even know about it,” said King to Entertainment Tonight, explaining that he wanted the cameo to be a surprise. He did acknowledge the impact of Samantha on the SATC “brand” by saying, “Even to the point where Kim was finished playing her for a while I wanted to keep Samantha alive.”
Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbs) weighed in by saying, somewhat ominously, “I think we all are emphasizing it’s really brief, it’s just a moment, so don’t be expecting anything other than that.”
Kristin Davis (Charlotte York Goldenblatt) added, “We know people miss her. We get it.”
Sarah Jessica Parker was at first gracious about the announcement, highlighting how pleased she was that it came to fruition. But when in an interview with the New Yorker she was pushed about the alleged feud between her and Cattrall, she stated, “It’s the weirdest thing, to be told we’re in a catfight. I would never speak poorly about Kim. I just wouldn’t.” She went on to insist, “I’ve never uttered fighting words in my life about anybody that I’ve worked with, ever. There is not a fight going on…So I just wish that they would stop calling this a catfight or an argument, because it doesn’t reflect, actually, there has been one person talking. And I’m not going to tell her not to, or anybody.”
If thems ain’t fightin’ words, I don’t know what is.
