Sorry, the 'Clueless' Sequel Series is No Longer Happening

Remember Peak TV? When there were so many well-funded and varied television series scrapping for our attention and we were overwhelmed with choice? I kind of miss those days now that we’re in the aftermath. Budgets are being cut, writers are unemployed, entire networks and platforms no longer release original content, and we’re left with a hell of a lot more Bravo shows to fill in the gaps. It’s not all bad, of course, but we’re clearly in the days of recession era entertainment. For evidence of that, see today’s news.

The Clueless sequel series, which would have seen Alicia Silverstone reprise the role of Cher Horowitz, is not moving forward at Peacock, according to Variety. The project was announced as being in development at the streaming service last April. While plot details weren’t revealed, it was known that it would show Cher in her later years.

It seemed like a sure-fire nostalgic hit and something that the industry would instantly greenlight. After all, they love legacy sequels and Gen-X/millennial pandering, and this hit all the buttons. But, alas, Peacock has decided to decline. It could go elsewhere but it feels notable once more that a seemingly obvious future hit was canned before things truly kicked off. It reminds me of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot drama. You’re telling me that you saw all that money lying on the table and walked away?

Budgets are tighter than ever. As noted by Variety, Peacock has a pretty interesting slate of scripted comedies and drama, but they have “not announced a new series order since May 2025 when “Dig” — which hails from Amy Poehler and Mike Schur — was picked up.” The bubble has burst, and it sucks.
