36 years after Jim Henson’s wildly ambitious fantasy, The Dark Crystal, came to theaters, Netflix is returning to this mythical world of Gelflings, Mystics, and Skeksis with a prequel television series called The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. The show will launch in 2019. But ahead of the holiday, Netflix is giving fans reason to cheer with the unveiling of its logline, an incredible voice cast, and our first look at the series’ Gelfling heroes.
Reminiscent of The Dark Crystal’s Jen is Rian, who will be voiced by recent Robin Hood, Taron Egerton.
Looking like a roughed-up Kira, Deet is voiced by Nathalie Emmanuel, best-known as Missandei on Game of Thrones.
Lastly, Brea is given voice by Anya Taylor Joy of The Witch and Split.
Per the logline, these three Gelflings will “discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power,” then will “set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.”
And they won’t be alone. Other Gelflings will be voiced by Helena Bonham-Carter, Eddie Izzard, Natalie Dormer, Toby Jones, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mark Strong, Alicia Vikander, Theo James, Outlander’s Caitriona Balfe, Beach Rats’ Harris Dickinson, and Star Trek: Discovery’s Shazad Latif.
The mighty Aughra will return, but Frank Oz won’t be reprising the role. Instead, Donna Kimball, who voiced a handful of Muppets in The Happytime Murders, will take on the part of this intimidating ally.
As for the Skeksis and Mystics, Netflix has unveiled a number of big names for these roles: Harvey Fierstein, Mark Hamill, Keegan-Michael Key, Jason Isaacs, Simon Pegg, The Witch’s Ralph Ineson, True Detective’s Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, and Andy Samberg. But they haven’t announced which side in this battle of Good versus Evil these actors will take!
Please speculate wildly in comments.
