The music video for the song of the summer, Kylie Minogue’s “Padam Padam,” seems to be set in an Australian’s idea of 1950s California. Minogue sings and dances in blood red from a quintessential American roadside diner, then what looks like a junkyard full of antique cars, and then a nostalgic motel.
“It seemed like a choice to make the video set in the daytime. It’s such a nighttime conversation,” Andy Cohen said to Minogue on Tuesday evening’s Watch What Happens Live.
“We really wanted to not be in a studio, not be in, like, nowhereville. And be in your good country. We really wanted to be here and make it obvious,” Minogue replied. Cohen agreed vigorously but didn’t investigate further into exactly why the Australian pop star wanted to be here and make it obvious.
“My mindset was a bit David Lynch, a bit Man Who Fell to Earth” she continued. “Just a bit…weird stuff happening in a very real place.” The weird stuff being people dancing in red outfits.
“Given your domination of Europe and Australia, when you have a hit this size in the states, is there a special…do you hold that in a special place? Does it make you feel like you conquered something?” Cohen later asked.
“It feels good, because it’s not, as we know, it’s not my main market, but I would love if it was to become one of them, and I think ‘Padam’ has really given me a chance to reach everyone. It would be great,” she replied.
Buckle up, America. Kylie’s coming.
