With her bold comedy special Nanette, stand-up Hannah Gadsby pushed the envelope while sharing her story and some dark truths. But on talk shows, as she promotes the special—available on Netflix—she is an absolute delight. It’s as if she’s thrown down the gauntlet for the title of “literal human sunshine.” Somewhere Lin-Manuel Miranda is smiling, because that’s his natural state, he’s not competitive, and we could all use some more human sunshine in this world.
Anyhow, the latest dose of delightful that Gadsby has doled out came on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where she began by sharing her awkward introduction to Emma Thompson, a celebrity she knew had “worn a bonnet in something.” Then she segues into how her biggest supporter and best heckler is her own mother. Warning: you may guffaw.
We need more Gadsby. Now. We need Making It and Nailed It and Gadsby. Netflix, how about giving her her own show. A sketch show. A talk show. Hell, a show where she just shares an awkward interaction anecdote and then wanders off for a cup of tea and a pat of her dogs. I don’t care much about the particulars. Just more. Immediately.
