Hannah Einbinder Calls AI Artists "Losers" and She's Right to Do So

Christ, I need the AI bubble to burst already. It’s bad enough that it’s taking all the writing jobs (except for the ones where smarmy think-piece writers say we all need to get on board the AI train) and creepy uncanny slop has polluted all of my social media feeds. I keep hearing people in the street talk about using ChatGPT and I have to resist the temptation to start ranting like a madwoman. Sam Altman, may you never know peace. But it is comforting to know that all the cool people are on the anti-AI side.

Hacks star Hannah Einbinder has never been one to hold her tongue. She’s vocally pro-Palestine, anti-ICE, and deeply progressive at a time when the entertainment industry has decided to placate Trump. During a press conference for the fifth and final season of Hacks (covered by Slashfilm), the cast and showrunners were pretty vocal about how the AI zeitgeist and the whole “it’s the new creativity” narrative is a heap of baloney. Said the series co-creator Jen Statsky: “There’s this massive push by tech to optimize every part of our lives. And to what cost?” She added that “the struggle is part of it,” of what makes us human and makes art so crucial.

Einbinder was blunt in her examination. “The people who make this stuff are losers,” she said. “They’re not artists. They’re not creative. And they’ve wanted their whole lives to be special. And they’re not special.” She continued:

“They’re trying to rob real creative people of our gifts. And you can’t. And even if you try, you will never be cool. You guys suck. No one likes you. Anyone who’s near you is because they crave power and access over any ethical standard. You are a loser. You will never be cool. And you probably had a rolly backpack in high school. I wanna put your head in the toilet and flush.”

Hell yeah, Hannah. Preach it!

We need to make these losers who churn out AI-generated slop know that they’re talentless and stupid. Oh, you were too incurious and lazy to make something yourself, so you had to rely on the plagiarism machine to make your photo of a talking banana with boobs? Heinous loser behaviour. You’re not interested in art or ideas or people, and everyone knows it. You just like the idea of being an always-be-optimising wannabe power player who tramples on other people’s work. You get a creepy power trip out of invading people’s labour and privacy. There’s a reason the MAGA crowd is so obsessed with churning out this crap.

But Einbinder is also right that the AI machine cannot replace what humans do. It needs them to steal from, and even then, it’s hilariously limited by the lack of imaginations of the tech bros who try to make fetch happen. Have you seen how many of these losers on social media are just like, “Hey, I made a video where Spider-Man hangs out on Arrakis. Revolutionary!” They have the creative scope of those pop culture mash-up t-shirts you see on sale in discount stores. And that’s the best they have. The worst they have… well, did you see what happened when these perverts instructed Grok to undress women and girls?

So yeah, burst the bubble already, before we see more people’s brains rotted into nothingness but fruit Love Island or whatever.
