Late night interviews can be a lot of things — charming! exciting! baffling as fuck! — but rarely do they achieve the level of cozy chumminess mixed with sudden emotional upheaval that David Cross’s appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert just did. On the couch to promote his upcoming comedy tour, as well as the 5th season of Arrested Development, Cross and Colbert kicked things off on the right foot by reminiscing about the good ol’ days. Turns out they worked together on The Dana Carvey Show for, like, a hot second, and David was actually the second person Stephen interviewed on The Daily Show! CUTE!

It was all good stuff, but a bit TOO low key — like two people with a lot of mutual friends in common catching up over coffee (and not in front of a studio audience). But then David started complimenting Stephen, and Stephen… couldn’t remember enough of David’s work to return the favor. And shit went downhill from there:

Look, of course it’s all staged. They’re fine! They planned it this way! But I have to hand it to them: I was totally fooled by this deceptively blasé, boring, insidery interview. Mostly though, I’m just a HUGE fan of a well-timed walk-off.
