We’ve waited eight years for this news. A Crazy Rich Asians TV show is in development at HBO Max! The film’s director Jon M. Chu, along with the film’s producers, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson have signed on as a executive producers, and the film’s leads, Henry Golding and Constance Wu, are reprising their roles. Also joining the cast from the movie are Ronnie Chieng and Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh.
In 2018, Crazy Rich Asians earned $239 million worldwide from a $30 million budget. The rom-com was the first film by a major Hollywood studio to feature a majority cast of Chinese descent in a modern setting since The Joy Luck Club. A sequel seemed inevitable, especially since the novel it was based on had several follow-ups. But it stalled in development hell for years, with screenwriter Adele Lim leaving the project over pay disputes (she had been offered significantly less money than her white male colleague.) Now, Lim is back and will serve as showrunner and executive producer!
“It’s a ‘Crazy Rich’ family reunion!” said Lim, calling it “the sequel we’ve been waiting for”. It will “delve into the characters and worlds of Kevin Kwan’s brilliant books” over eight episodes, she said. “Our writers room is humming and we can’t wait to share what we’ve come up with.”
This is excellent news for people who need the perfect thing to watch on a plane. Seriously, there is no better plane movie than Crazy Rich Asians.
