Let’s face it: 2018 has been a huge dumpster fire of a year. However, there is the occasional bright spot and Netflix’s reboot Queer Eye was definitely one of them. The new Fab Five descended on the homes and lives of 8 different men, armed with avocados, relentless positivity, and patterned short-sleeve button-ups to help them become their best selves from the inside out. It may have been formulaic, but it was wonderful. Pretty soon, Netflix users were picking their favorite (mine’s Tan) and sobbing on their couches over men discovering new ways of living.
While every episode had their moments — only a monster would remain unmoved by Tom declaring his love for the Fab Five in episode one — AJ’s episode was easily a fan favorite. Over the course of the episode, AJ came out to his stepmother, introduced her to his partner Andrey, and became a bit more comfortable with living his life as a gay man in Atlanta.
While Queer Eye is at its core a makeover show, there has definitely been some romantic happy endings thanks to the Fab Five’s work. The aforementioned Tom ended up remarrying Abby, his ex-wife and love of his life, and at Thursday’s Netflix FYSee event, it was announced that AJ and his fiancé Andrey were now married. Pardon me while I express myself in GIFs.
Listen, I know there’s a lot of TV out there. Hell, there is an unmanageable amount of content on Netflix alone. But Queer Eye is truly the ray of sunshine that we need right now. The second season is coming out on June 15, so you have plenty of time to catch up.
