Did you know that The Great British Baking Show comes back in two weeks? Next question: can you remember last year’s winner? I can’t. Previous players blink in and out of my memory like ghosts of seasons’ past. Aside from Nelly, however, I’m struggling mightily to remember anything from last season, which is odd considering that it aired just last year; in a world that averages two to three years between seasons, that’s a cakewalk (I promise, this pun is purely accidental).
Still, there’s an argument to be made that a bit of forgetfulness is a far better state of affairs than remembering the show for all the wrong reasons. The international incident known as “Mexico Week” was over three years ago, but Baking Show fans’ eyes take on a haunted look at the mere mention of the word, “avocado.” Never forget.
But yes, a brand new season of Baking Show will be upon us in only a few weeks time, with our U.K. friends getting their usual first dibs starting September 2nd and the premiere streaming stateside a few days later. Paul Hollywood, Prue Leith, Noel Fielding, and Alison Hammond (who has, indeed, turned out to be an absolute delight) are all returning to fulfill their hosting duties. As for the competitors, as usual they come from a variety of age ranges and backgrounds. You can find the list of competitors here, along with brief bios. Right now I’m biased towards Leighton partially because he’s originally from Swansea, Wales, a place dear to my traveler heart, and he loudly sings along to Les Miserables (same!). Really, it doesn’t matter how much any one of us can retain from past seasons; it all comes down to viewership, and I’m sure that enough of us will be watching in numbers large enough to satisfy even a streamer with as big of an (audience) appetite as Netflix.
The premiere of The Great British Baking Show will stream in the U.S. beginning on September 5th, with subsequent episodes streaming each Friday after.
