I don’t get the Ivanka and Jared love. And I don’t just mean that I don’t understand people who are comforted by Ivanka and Jared’s assumed moderating influence on the President. I mean, I don’t understand why anyone likes either one of them to any degree given the purposeful obfuscation of their actual goals and personalities which have prevented anyone outside of their close circle from getting to know them whatsoever.
Or put more bluntly: what have they done for me lately?
Let’s give Ivanka and Jared the benefit of the doubt, and frame their roles in the White House in the most positive light. They don’t feel actually qualified for the roles they’ve been given, but they feel obligated to guide the President towards the most rational ends possible. Unfortunately for them, the President trusts them, giving them a good deal of power. And due to that great power, they’ve accepted a great responsibility. All of this would make them seem like selfless, patriotic citizens determined to make the best of a bad situation … had they not actively worked to get Trump elected.
If either one of them genuinely felt a responsibility to act for the betterment of the country, they could have done so back when they were actively vouching for the man who, we now assume they feel, is too reckless to be president. And sure, no one believed he would actually win, so they can’t be held too responsible for their roles in his election. Of course, then the question is: if they didn’t believe he would win, why were they campaigning for him?
Because it got them stuff.
In a best case scenario, what we hope happened was that Ivanka and Jared planned only to fleece the American people for an election cycle, and now that they accidentally got her father into one of the most important offices in the world, they feel compelled to not abandon it to the Neo-Nazis and sycophants? This is how we frame their roles in the White House when we want to make them look good? And included in that scenario is the clear problem that “Getting Donald Trump To Listen To Us” still leaves them wildly unqualified for the positions their taking. Even if we think they’re trying to do the right thing, they’re most likely unable to accomplish it.
And when it comes down to it, there’s still a very small possibility that Jared and Ivanka are truly lovely people. But at this point, there’s no reason to think I wouldn’t feel better if the presidency were in the hands of Baron and Tiffany.
