Medicine For Melancholy (2008)

Barry Jenkins’ beautiful debut feature stars Wyatt Cenac and Tracey Heggins as strangers who stumble from a one-night-stand gone long into an awkward morning after that could blossom into something more. Casually cool, wonderfully witty and tenaciously tender, this artful indie not only offers humor and heart, but also a rare look at being a black hipster in a swiftly gentrifying city.

Moonrise Kingdom (2012)

First love—radiant, colorful and whimsical—spins at the center of Wes Anderson’s stunning ensemble piece. Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward star in this boy scout meets bookish girl charmer, while Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Jason Shwartzman, Bob Balaban, Frances McDormand and SWINTON co-star.

TiMER (2009)

For something with more of a sci-fi bent, check out this under-sung treasure starring Buffy The Vampire Slayer’s Emma Caulfield. Set in a world where an installed timer counts down to the day you’ll meet your soulmate, one frustrated single faces galling uncertainty when her timer blinks blank. What to do when a free-spirited young man gets under her skin?

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012)

Lorene Scafaria’s directorial debut delivers a bittersweet story about finding love just when you need it most. With an asteroid ripping toward the earth, humanity is in a panic of depression and debauchery. But amid the madness, one lonely man and one sentimental woman set out on a road trip that sparks a truly unique romance.

Man Up (2015)

The best rom-com you haven’t seen stars Lake Bell as a cynical single who accidentally steals a blind date. The right place at the right time puts her in the way of a handsome divorcee (Simon Pegg), and when the pair hits it off, who could blame her for running with the ruse? Well, he could. And will. No bother. These two will find love by overcoming absurd obstacles like an odd urban triathlon, a crushing creeper, a scathing ex, and a sea of drunken teenagers. (Fun fact: This is the only film on this list where yours truly is quoted in the trailer.)

Boy Meets Girl

This Southern-fried indie centers on the love life of trans teen girl Ricky Jones (Michelle Hendley), whose enviable confidence is rattled when she unexpectedly falls for the Southern Belle down the block. Making this crush complicated, Ricky’s paramour is engaged. To a man. Or more specifically, to the bigoted bully who’s been harassing Ricky since grade school. Thankfully, she’s got a supportive family and her best friend Robby to help her through, and keep this earnest and honest coming-of-age story as whip-smart and fun as its fearless heroine.

How to Steal A Million
(1966)

For something classic and sexy, check out this romp that casts Audrey Hepburn and Peter O’Toole as a pair of unusual art thieves. Between her pixie appeal and his roguish charms, this playful rom-com is sure to spur swoons.

Desk Set

Defining the tropes of generations of rom-coms to come, this Tracy/Hepburn classic begins with its beloved stars at odds. When a super computer is lugged into the Federal Broadcasting Network’s reference library, head researcher Bunny Watson (Katharine Hepburn) becomes the instant enemy of its inventor (Spencer Tracy), who unwittingly is threatening her job as well as those of her female colleagues. But as they bicker, love blossoms. That clattering computer can’t compute compete.

Jane Eyre (2011)

Based on Charlotte Bronte’s classic novel, this stirring adaptation brings to vivid life the tale of the titular governess (Mia Wasikowska), who fell for the dashing but secretive Mr. Rochester (Michael Fassbender). Celebrated director Cary Joji Fukunaga brings a bunk-worthy sensuality to this Victorian drama (especially the scene where Rochester hurls his face into her skirts), making it the perfect pick for a night of Netflix and chill.

A Life Less Ordinary

This Danny Boyle gem is one of the strangest romantic comedies the world has ever seen. Ewan McGregor stars as a janitor/aspiring novelist who becomes an impromptu kidnapper when he meets the headstrong (and trigger happy) daughter (Cameron Diaz) of his ruthless and wealthy boss (Ian Holm.) As the two flee in a mutually beneficial—if bone-headed—ransom plot, the heavens themselves conspire to help, sending a pair of angels (Delroy Lindo and Holly Hunter) to assure these mismatched misfits end up with a happily ever after. Also in the mix is a jaunty dance number, a stop-motion epilogue,, and Stanley Tucci as a swaggering, oversexed dentist. What else could you possibly want?

I Love You Phillip Morris

This rare rom-com based on a true story stars Jim Carrey as genius con artist Steven Russell, who channeled his skills of persuasion, deception and theft into creating the perfect life for his ex-con beau, Philip Morris (Ewan McGregor). Brought to you by Bad Santa’s writers Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, this raunchy romp boasts brash humor and a ferocious heart.

Love Actually

No date night list would be complete without this wildly polarizing Richard Curtis hit. In London at Christmas, scads of lovers find romance and heartbreak as they bob from offices to cheeky art gallery exhibits, wedding receptions to Christmas recitals, dodgy row houses to the swanky digs of the Prime Minister. Hugh Grant, Martine McCutcheon, Liam Neeson, Bill Nighy, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Martin Freeman, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Andrew Lincoln, Keira Knightley and many, many more star.
