Thanksgiving weekend is a big time for the box office, and the film industry was certainly hoping for some high numbers to balance out what’s been a less-than-stellar Winter so far. They got a boost in the form of Zootopia 2, the Disney animated sequel that was a keen reminder of the power of family movies, sequels, and anthropomorphic animals.

Zootopia 2, or Zootropolis 2 if you’re in the UK, grossed a mighty $156 million over the Thanksgiving weekend. But that was small fry compared to its international numbers. It’s currently sitting at $556.4 million total intake, with $400 million of that coming from outside the USA. $272 million of that came from China. All of that gives the movie the fourth-highest opening weekend in box office history.

Things were still good for Wicked: For Good. Even with a 57.3% drop in attendance from its opening weekend, it’s comfortably sitting at $270.4 million domestically. All in all, a solid Thanksgiving weekend for you Americans and your leftover turkey dinners.

At number six is Eternity, the sci-fi romance starring Elizabeth Olson, Miles Teller, and Callum Turner, with $3,169,780. Counter-programming for the holidays against Disney is always a good idea but mid-budget indies versus a musical? We know where most people will drag their exhausted families.

At number eight is Hamnet, Chloe Zhao’s historical drama about Agnes and William Shakespeare. It’s a big Oscar contender this season, and it opened strong in its limited premiere with $880,000 from 119 locations. Expect this one to get a long and slow rollout.

Speaking of awards season contenders, the Brazilian drama The Secret Agent opened in two locations with a $46,209 gross.

In other limited release news: You Got Gold: A Celebration of John Prine, a concert film for the late great icon, made $10,320; and The Tale of Silyan a documentary about a North Macedonian farmer who forms a bond with an injured stork, earned $6,473.

This coming week sees the release of the horror sequel Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, the pro-shot of the Broadway revival Merrily We Roll Along, the anime movie Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution, and the two-become-one movie Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair.
