Thanks to a savvy marketing campaign and a string of glowing reviews, the horror film Weapons stayed at the top of the box office with a comfortable $25 million. That brings its domestic total to just over $89 million. Worldwide, it’s closing in on $150 million. Not too shabby for a $38 million original title playing in August. Things also remain pretty good for Freakier Friday, which is now at $54.7 million domestically after two weeks.
Both did better than the biggest new release of the weekend, Nobody 2 starring Bob Odenkirk. The action sequel landed at number three with only $9.25 million from 3,260 locations. Eh.
At number 10 is Coolie, a Tamil-language Indian action-thriller about a former union leader investigating the death of his friend. It earned $2.45 million from 900 theatres in the USA. In India, it’s currently the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2025, the third highest-grossing Indian film of 2025, and one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of all time.
Behind that at number 11 is the re-release of Shin Godzilla, one of the best Godzilla movies of the century (is it better than Godzilla Minus One? Discuss.) GKIDS put it back in 1,290 theatres, and it earned $1,625,927.
The indie drama East of Wall, starring Scoot McNairy and Jennifer ‘Lestat’s mother’ Ehle, debuted at number 15 with $372,240. At number 17 is Witchboard, a remake of the 1986 horror film, with $197,000.
In limited release news: the psychological drama Went Up the Hill, starring Vicky Krieps, took in $20,000 from 132 locations; The Glassworker, the first-ever hand-drawn animated feature to come out of Pakistan, earned $12,174 from one cinema; and Suspended Time, a French drama from director Olivier Assayas, grossed $4,000 from one place.
This coming week sees the release of Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke’s noir comedy Honey Don’t!, and the English-language dub of the Chinese animated phenomenon Ne Zha 2.
