Weapons had one of the best marketing campaigns of 2025 so far. It was spooky, mysterious, and didn’t give much away for curious viewers, a rarity in the spoiler age. It paid off marvellously for Warner Bros., as the film took the top spot at this past weekend’s box office race. It earned an impressive $42.5 million from 3,202 locations. Its worldwide gross is already at $70 million, from a reported budget of $38 million. Well done, creepy kids.
Freakier Friday, the legacy sequel to the Disney favourite, starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, opened at number two. It had an impressive debut too, with $29 million from 3,975 cinemas. Nostalgia for millennial women pays off. So yes, expect way more legacy sequels over the next few years.
At number ten is Sketch, a fantasy about a young girl’s drawings coming to life. It got amazing reviews, but its distributor, Angel Studios, didn’t seem to know what to do with it. So, it only earned $2,527,285 from 2,157 theatres.
Kristin Scott Thomas made her directorial debut with My Mother’s Wedding, starring Scarlett Johansson and Sienna Miller. It opened at number 13 with $432,000 from 402 places. The documentary It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley, about the late singer, took in $400,000 from 125 places. Behind that was Strange Harvest, a horror mockumentary, with $214,075 from 770 theatres. Boys Go to Jupiter, an indie animated film starring Tavi Gevinson and Cole Escola, grossed $15,000 from one place.
This coming week sees the release of the Bob Odenkirk punchy sequel Nobody 2 and Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest.
