It was a wild weekend, eh? Amid the Hollywood hunger for more IP to plunder, there’s been an ongoing argument about whether or not audiences actually want any of these reheated franchises. I’m sure we’ll see more of that conversation take place regarding Twisters, but I think it overlooks the real issue: we just want to see fun weather-based mayhem every once in a while, but not in real life.

Oscar nominee Lee Isaac Chung followed up Minari with the sequel to the decently beloved 1996 film Twister. Glen Powell, the current golden boy of film, got another chance to prove that his upward trajectory isn’t a fluke, and boy did it pay off. The movie debuted at number one with an impressive $80.5 million. It’s already at about $123 million worldwide, and good reviews may help give it a slow-burn theatrical run. Amblin put down about $155 - 200 million for this one, so it’s got a while to go before it breaks even, but things are positive so far.

Despicable Me 4 is shooting up the charts worldwide and is now the third highest-grossing title of 2024 so far, having soared past Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire with $574.4 million. As for the top movie of the year, Inside Out 2, Disney has (as of the writing of this post) $1,443,275,604 in the kitty.

The Punjabi comedy Bad Newz, about a one-night stand that ends in pregnancy, debuted at number eight with $1.069 million. It was the only other reasonably big release of the week to make it into the top ten. Also new this weekend was Oddity, a horror film about a medium mourning the death of her twin sister. That one earned $555,500 from 790 locations, placing it at number 12.

In limited release news: Widow Clicquot, a historical drama about the grand dame of champagne production, grossed $190,000 from 102 theatres; Crumb Catcher earned $20,866 from 55 places; The Turkish drama Crossing made $16,236 from two locations; and the Japanese film Great Absence brought in $9,440 from one cinema.

This coming week sees the release of Deadpool & Wolverine.
