Live-action remakes of animated classics aren’t going anywhere. Disney’s turned it into a cottage industry, and now DreamWorks is getting in on the action. How to Train Your Dragon topped the charts this past weekend with a new opening weekend record for the franchise. It easily took the top spot with $83.7 million from 4,356 theatres.
Can it keep up with the remake of Lilo & Stitch, however? That seems a little less sure. That film, despite weaker reviews, is now at $366.3 million domestically and $858,371,809 worldwide. It’s currently the third highest-grossing film of 2025 so far, with less than $100 million to go before it overtakes A Minecraft Movie.
For adults who were in the mood for something different, there was Materialists, A24’s romantic drama starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal. Reviews were strong, and there was a real hunger for some good counterprogramming with a non-kid focus. The movie opened at just over $12 million from 2,844 cinemas, putting it at number three.
Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning is at number four with $166.3 million domestically so far, which is looking a little sluggish. These movies are expensive and it seems increasingly unlikely that it’ll break even. And lo, Tom Cruise looked upon his land and realised there were no more buildings for him to jump off.
Things were looking slow for another action film, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, which fell from number two to five in its second week of release. Its 61% drop in gross from its opening leaves it with $41.8 million domestically. Granted, this franchise is way cheaper to make than Mission: Impossible, so its journey to profit will be much easier.
Limited releases were thin on the ground this past weekend: the Western The Unholy Trinity brought in $559,610 from 771 locations; and the drama Tatami earned $16,200 from one place.
This coming week sees the release of Pixar’s Elio, the rom-com Bride Hard, and the zombie horror 28 Years Later.
