Magicians demand to be taken seriously. Perhaps they should, since the Now You See Me franchise continues to be a surprise money maker. The third in the series, and the one with the best title, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, took the top spot at the box office this past weekend with $21.3 million from 3,403 theatres. That’s not brilliant, admittedly, but it’s already at $75 million worldwide on a $90 million budget, which is better. These films have surprising legs abroad, which might be down to their savviness in filming in places like Macau and Abu Dhabi. Well, that and it’s about magicians doing wild stuff in the name of justice and family. It’s the Fast and Furious franchise wth handcuffs.

Things weren’t so good for Edgar Wright’s The Running Man, which landed at number two with only $17 million. Reviews were mixed, although they were stronger than those of the Schwarzenegger version, but even a lot of Wright lovers felt this one was defanged. This one came with a $110 million budget, so it seems unlikely that it’ll break even in its theatrical release. Glen Powell, you’re not the new Tom Cruise just yet. Did Chad Powers get a second season yet?

Neon is working overtime to turn Osgood Perkins into their big-name horror director. Certainly, both Longlegs and The Monkey proved that he has the stuff to pull it off. Can Keeper help him keep up that streak? Well, reviews weren’t so enthusiastic, and it only landed at number seven with $2.5 million. It could stick around during a quiet month. I do have to wonder, however, if we’re risking Osgood overload with so many films in a short stretch of time.

The action thriller King Ivory brought in $97,700 from 752 cinemas. Muzzle: City of Wolves, a ‘one man and his dog’ action-crime movie starring Aaron Eckhart, barked up $90,000 from 575 places.

In limited release news: the animation Arco grossed $38,285 from two theatres; the drama Sirât took in $34,057 from two locations; and the drama Rebuilding, starring Josh O’Connor, earned $29,145, also from two cinemas.

This week sees the release of Brendan Fraser’s Rental Family and the musical sequel Wicked: For Good.
