It’s dump month so of course new wide releases are thin on the ground. With the Oscar nominations happening this week, expect to see some of those big awards contenders get a stronger foothold in the box office as they expand wide to bank on that buzz. For now, things were quiet enough for Mean Girls to stay on the top spot. Despite a 59% drop from its opening week, the musical that Paramount is pretending isn’t a musical made an extra $11.7 million. That brings its domestic total to $50 million.
After five weeks, the rom-com Anyone But You has held on strong. It’s still in the top five, has lost surprisingly few theatres over its run, and good word-of-mouth has brought people to it. Its current domestic gross is over $64.2 million, which is almost $20 million more than The Boys in the Boat and about $3 million more than The Color Purple.
Things weren’t so good for I.S.S. The space thriller only debuted at number seven with just over $3 million from 2,518 theatres. To put that into perspective, it made about $600k less than Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is in its fifth week of release. Then again, DC’s wettest isn’t doing brilliantly himself, with only $114.1 million in the bank domestically. Remember when its predecessor made $1 billion worldwide?
Ava DuVernay’s Origin opened in 125 theatres to $875,000. The film has received a big push in the past couple of weeks from stars like Angelina Jolie as they campaign for its awards success, particularly for lead actress Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.
In limited news, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse got pushed back into an extra 466 theatres and earned $150,000. Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell, a Vietnamese drama, grossed $12,069 from two locations. Pasang: In the Shadow of Everest, a documentary about Pasang Lhamu Sherpa and her journey to become the first Nepali woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest, brought in $4,500 from two cinemas.
This coming week sees the Mexican drama Totem.
