The box office is making room for the upcoming invasion of the Na’vi. It’s never a good idea to go up against James Cameron in the battle of making all of the money, so the majority of studios took a break in preparation for Avatar: Fire and Ash. All except for a plucky gal checking the sole of her shoe.

But nothing was beating Zootopia 2 this past weekend. Disney’s animated sequel stayed in the top spot in its second week, bringing its domestic total to over $258.9 million. It took less than a fortnight for the movie to pass $1 billion worldwide. It’s already the second-highest-grossing movie of 2025, leaping over Lilo & Stitch. Over three-quarters of that money came from overseas, particularly China, where Zootopia is apparently a very big deal. Sexy foxes unite us all.

Behind that is Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, the horror sequel, with a total domestic gross of $95.4 million so far.

Debuting at number seven is Ella McCay. James L. Brooks is a legend, but his return to the big screen was not well-received, to put it mildly. Disney didn’t exactly prioritize the movie, dumping it in theatres a week before the Avatar-palooza. Its entire ad campaign seemed to be getting people to recreate Emma Mackay’s pose on the poster? Shockingly, it didn’t work, as the movie fizzled in its debut with only $2.1 million from 2,500 locations. To put that in perspective, it was only a few hundred thousand dollars behind the festive re-release of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, which earned $1.85 million from 2,250 theatres.

Speaking of re-releases, The Shining turns 45, and what better way to ring in the holiday season than by watching Jack Nicholson terrorize his family with an axe? It scared up $1.56 million from 400 places.

Awards season is in full swing, and so One Battle After Another is keen to secure its frontrunner status. It returned to over 500 cinemas and earned an extra $450,000 for its troubles. It’ll certainly lose a few IMAX screens next week thanks to James Cameron, but this one has proven it’s in it for the long haul.

In limited release news: The Chinese drama Resurrection earned $64,200 from three locations; the satire Atropia made $9,031 from one cinema; and The King of Color, a documentary about Larry Herbert, the inventor of the Pantone Matching System, grossed $4,930 from two theatres.

This coming week sees the release of the thriller The Housemaid, the religious animation David, and the behemoth Avatar: Fire and Ash.
