While there were three new major releases this past weekend, the end of August usually symbolizes that time when studios start to shove out stuff they either don’t know how to market or think will underperform. The summer is now technically over, boo, but we’re not quite ready for the fall festival season, so it’s that clammy liminal space in between.
That means that, even with new competition, and even though it’s in its fifth week of release, Deadpool & Wolverine took back the top spot at the box office with another $18.3 million. That brings its domestic total to over $577.2 million. Inside Out 2 is still the king of 2024 so far, with $1.64 billion to its name, but Deadpool & Wolverine is creeping up there with $1.21 billion. Cameos work, apparently.
Zoe Kravitz made her directorial debut with Blink Twice, starring Naomi Ackie and Channing Tatum. Reviews were pretty strong, but the audience seemed disinterested. It opened at number four with $7.32 million from 3,067 theatres. For comparison’s sake, Twisters managed to make about $6.2 million from a similar number of theatres and that’s been out for six weeks.
Right behind it in the number five spot is The Forge, a Christian film, with $6.6 million from 1,818 theatres.
The long-awaited (?) remake of The Crow seemed doomed on arrival. After years of pre-production hell, and the director of the original film lambasting it online, we got this new version with Bill Skarsgard and FKA Twigs. Critics loathed it, giving it some of the worst reviews of any film in 2024 so far (let Borderlands breathe a sigh of relief, I suppose — although that film is a catastrophic flop, having only grossed $15.1 million domestically in three weeks.) It resulted in a debut at number eight at the box office with only $4.6 million from 2,752 locations. Ouch.
The only indie release of the weekend was Between the Temples, starring Jason Schwartzman and the legendary Carol Kane. This drama earned $677,948 from 576 cinemas.
This coming weekend sees the release of the sci-fi horror AfrAId and that biopic where Dennis Quaid plays Reagan. Sure. Why not?
