Final Destination returned to cinemas with a new instalment, the first one since 2011. Since health and safety violations terrify us all, this sixth addition to the series was, of course, the big hit of the weekend. Final Destination: Bloodlines topped the box office with $51 million from 3,523 theatres. Horror films always do well, plus this one comes with nostalgic value and some of the franchise’s strongest reviews ever. Bloodlines earned another $51 million overseas, bringing its international gross to $102 million in only a couple of days. This one had a reported $50 million budget, which is high for a horror film but hey, mission accomplished.

Things remained solid for Thunderbolts*/The New Avengers, which passed $155 million domestically and is now the fifth highest-grossing film of 2025 so far. Right behind that internationally is Sinners, although Ryan Coogler’s film is well outdoing its Marvel competition domestically, with $240.7 million in the bank.

At number six is Hurry Up Tomorrow, the newest attempt at Hollywood glory from The Weeknd. For a guy whose music and videos are often so cinematic, he is decidedly not good at actually making film or TV. I watched The Idol. I suffered for his sins. Terrible reviews sank his film and it only earned $3.3 million from 2,020 cinemas.

A24 and Tom Robinson’s Friendship expanded its cinematic run from six theatres to 60, and saw a 214% jump in its earnings. Its $1.4 million weekend gross adds up to about $23,338 per-theatre. What’s the opposite of a coffin flop?

This coming week sees the release of Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning and the live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch.
